ScanThe Scanning feature is used to monitor multiple chan-nels programmed into the transceiver. While scanning,the transceiver will check each channel for the presenceof a signal, and will stop on a channel if a signal is present.rTo activate scanning:Press the assigned Soft key.The scanner will search the channels, looking for ac-tive ones; it will pause each time it finds a channel onwhich someone is speaking.rTo stop scanning:Press the assigned Soft key.Operation will revert to the channel to which the CHknob is set.Dual WatchThe Dual Watch feature is similar to the Scan feature,except that only two channels are monitored: The currentoperating channel; and the “Priority” channel.rTo activate Dual Watch:Press the assigned Soft key.The scanner will search the two channels; it will pauseeach time it finds a channel on which someone isspeaking.rTo stop Dual Watch:Press the assigned Soft key.Operation will revert to the channel to which the CHknob is set.Talk AroundPress the assigned Soft to activate the Talk Around fea-ture when you are operating on duplex channel systems(separate receive and transmit frequencies, utilizing a “re-peater” station). The Talk Around feature allows you tobypass the repeater station and talk directly to a stationthat is nearby. This feature has no effect when you areoperating on “Simplex” channels, where the receive andtransmit frequencies are already the same.Note that your dealer may have made provision for “TalkAround” channels by programming “repeater” and “TalkAround” frequencies on two adjacent channels. If so, thekey may be used for one of the other Pre-ProgrammedFunctions.TX Save OffPress the assigned Soft key to disable the Transmit Bat-tery Saver, if you are operating in a location where highpower is almost always needed.The Transmit Battery Saver helps extend battery life byreducing transmit power when a very strong signal froman apparently nearby station is being received. Undersome circumstances, though, your hand-held radio maynot be heard well at the other end of the communicationpath, and high power may be necessary at all times.Follow-Me Dual WatchTo set up a “Dual Watch” frequency pair using the “Fol-low-Me” feature, select a channel using the CH selectorknob. Now press the assigned Soft key; pressing the as-signed Soft key locks the current channel as the User-assigned Priority Channel. Now rotate the CH selectorknob to another channel (not the “Scanning Start” chan-nel). Your radio will now switch back-and-forth betweenthe currently-selected channel (shown on the CH selec-tor knob) and the User-assigned Priority Channel.During “Follow-Me” scanning (after you have pressedthe key), you can set up the “Dual Watch” feature by ro-tating the CH selector knob to another channel. The ra-dio will then scan back and forth between the originalUser-assigned Priority Channel and the newly-selectedchannel.The Priority Channel you have assigned (before pressingthe key) will be retained in memory until you change it.Channel UpPress the assigned Soft key to increase operating chan-nel.Channel DownPress the assigned Soft key to decrease operating chan-nel.Call/ResetWhen the 2-tone selective calling unit is installed, pressthe assigned Soft key to silence the receiver and reset foranother call, when a communication is finished.LampPress the assigned Soft key to illuminate the LCD forfive second.Speed DialYour Dealer may have pre-programmed Auto-Dial tele-phone number memories into your radio.To dial a number, just press the Dealer-assigned Soft keyfor Speed Dialing. When the battery voltage reaches6.3 volts, substitute a freshly charged battery and re-charge the depleted pack. The TX/BUSY indicatoron the top of the radio will blink red when the batteryvoltage is low.rAvoid recharging Ni-Cd batteries often with little usebetween charges, as this can degrade the charge ca-pacity. We recommend that you carry an extra, fully-charged pack with you so the operational battery maybe used until depletion (this “deep cycling” techniquepromotes better long-term battery capacity).OperationPreliminary StepsrInstall a charged battery pack onto the transceiver, asdescribed previously.rScrew the supplied antenna onto the Antenna jack.Never attempt to operate this transceiver without anantenna connected.rIf you have a Speaker/Microphone, we recommendthat it not be connected until you are familiar withthe basic operation of the VX-160/-180.Operation Quick StartrTo turn the top panel’sVOL/PWR knob clock-wise to turn on the radioon.rTurn the top panel’s CHselector knob to choosethe desired operatingchannel.rRotate the VOL/PWRknob to set the volumelevel. If no signal ispresent, press and holdthe MONITOR key (thelower button on the leftside) more than 2 sec-onds; background noise will now be heard, and youmay use this to set the VOL/PWR knob for the de-sired audio level.rPress and hold the MONI-TOR key more than 2seconds (or press theMONITOR key twice) toquiet the noise and re-sume normal (quiet)monitoring.Function Soft Key[A] [B] [C]MONITOR Monitor Scan Dual Watch Talk Around TX Save Off Follow-me Dual Watch Channel Up Channel Down Call/Reset Lamp Speed Dial Low Power Lock Add/Del NonerTo transmit, press andhold the PTT switch.Speak into the micro-phone area of the frontpanel grille (lower left-hand corner) in a normalvoice level. To return tothe Receive mode, re-lease the PTT switch.rIf a Speaker/Microphone is available, remove the plas-tic cap and its two mounting screws from the rightside of the transceiver, then insert the plug from theSpeaker/Microphone into the MIC/SP jack; securethe plug using the screws supplied with the Speaker/Microphone. Hold the speaker grille up next to yourear while receiving. To transmit, press the PTT switchon the Speaker/Microphone, just as you would on themain transceiver’s body.Note:Save the original plastic cap and its mountingscrews. They should be re-installed when not usingthe Speaker/Microphone.Key Functions (VX-180 only)The VX-180 have the [A], [B], and [C] function keysand MONITOR key. These Soft keys functions can becustomized, via programming by your VERTEX STAN-DARD dealer, to meet your communications/network re-quirements. Some features may require the purchase andinstallation of optional internal accessories. The possibleSoft key programming features are illustrated below, andtheir functions are explained next chapter. For further de-tails, contact your VERTEX STANDARD dealer.For future reference, check the box next to each functionthat has been assigned to the Soft key on your particularradio, and keep it handy.Description of Operating FunctionsMonitorPress the assigned Soft key momentarily to disable theTone squelch.Press and hold the assigned Soft key more than 2 sec-onds to disable the Noise and Tone squelch. Repeatedlypress and hold the assigned Soft key more than 2 sec-onds (or press the assigned Soft key twice) to resume theNoise and Tone squelch.This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules.Operation is subject to the condition that this de-vice does not cause harmful interference.
