Slots and openings in the back or bottom of the base unit and handset areprovided for ventilation. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heatregister. This product should not be placed in any area where proper ventilationis not provided.7. This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicatedon the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply in yourhome, consult your dealer or local power company.8. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not install this productwhere the cord may have anyone walking on it.9. Never push objects of any kind into this product through slots in the base orhandset as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts thatcould result in a risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on theproduct.10. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product, but takeit to an authorized service facility. Opening or removing parts of the base orhandset other than specified access doors may expose you to dangerousvoltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembling can cause electric shock whenthe product is subsequently used.11. Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in the risk offire or electric shock.12. Slide the battery cover off by gentlypressing on the recessed area witha downward motion.2. Unplug and remove the old battery.Do not dispose of the old battery in atrash compactor or fire - it couldexplode.3. With the red and black wires at thebottom of the battery, angle the top ofthe battery into the compartment,under the claws. Next, press thelower end of the battery down, so itis held in place by the lower claw.Now, plug the connector into thesocket, located below the battery. Slipthe battery wires into the guide,located below and to the left of thesocket.4. In Canada, call VTechElectronics at 1-800-267-7377.Important Safety Instructions Installing/Replacing the Battery5. The new battery must be charged before using your telephone. Place thehandset in the base unit to allow it to charge for over 16 hours. Maximumbattery life between charges is approximately 3.75 hours of talk time or 3.75days of standby.CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or injury, read and follow these instructions:1. Use only the VTech battery supplied, or equivalent.2. Do not open or mutilate the battery. Released electrolyte is corrosive andmay cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.3. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery withconducting materials such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery orconductor may overheat and cause burns.4. Do not dispose of the battery in a fire. The cell may explode.123Setting Up Your 21011. Choose an area near an electrical outlet and a telephone wall jack.2. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical outlet and the DC connector tothe power jack on the bottom of the base unit. Insert the cord in the channelguide.CAUTION: Use only the AC adapter shipped with your t 2101. It  is  specificallydesigned for this product.NOTE: Connect power to the base unit before placing the handset in thecradle.3. CHARGE THE HANDSET BATTERY BEFORE USE. The battery rechargeautomatically whenever the handset is in the base unit cradle. The batterymust be charged for 15 hours before using your phone for the first time.4. Connect the telephone line cord. Insert one end of the telephone line cord intothe phone jack on the bottom of  the base unit. Plug the other end into atelephone wall jack.  Make sure the plugs snap securely into place. Insertthe cord in the channel guide.5. CHECK FOR A DIAL TONE. After the battery is charged, pick up thehandset and press the ON key. You should hear a dial tone. If not, see INCASE OF DIFFICULTY.ON LED• lit when the handset is on anactive call.• Flashes in unison with an incomingring.• Flashes quickly during program-ming mode.• Flashes slowly when the batteryis low.• Illuminates steadily when thehandset is charging in the base.ON/ FLASH KEY• Press the ON key to make a call.• If you are currently on a call, andhear a call waiting tone, press ONto switch to the second call.Press ON again to return to theoriginal call.VOLUME  CONTROL• Adjusts the volume of what youhear through the handset.• While on a call, press the   or key to adjust the listeningvolume. The handset will emit adouble beep when the maximumor minimum volume level has beenreached.Getting Started Handset FeaturesOFF KEY• Press the OFF key to exit allmodes of operation.REDIAL / PAUSE KEY• When you hear the dial tone, pressREDIAL to call the last numberdialed on your phone.• It can also be used to store thelast number dialed into speed dialmemory. See Storing a RedialNumber into Speed Dial fordetails.• You can store pauses into yourspeed dial numbers. See StoringPauses in Memory for details.CHAN KEY• Pressing the CHAN key when thehandset is in use will activate achannel change to the next freechannel.• This is used if you areexperiencing noise or interferenceon the current channel.MEM/PROG KEY• Press the MEM key to enterMEMORY mode.• The sequence for dialing out aspeed dial number in memory is:ON, MEM, number button (0-9).• Press MEM/PROG  to enterprogramming mode. Base Unit FeaturesPAGE KEY• Press the PAGE key to page thehandset.• Press it second time to cancel a page.• The base will ring the handset for oneminute before ending the pageautomatically.• The handset can also cancel thepage by pressing the OFF key.Making CallsPick up the handset  and press ON.When you hear a dial tone, dial thenumber. The Handset In Use/Charging LED will illuminate while thehandset is in use.If you make a mistake when dialing,press OFF to hang up, then pressON to get the dial tone again.You must always press ON beforeyou can dial a call on the handset.Answering CallsWhen an incoming call is ringing, theLED on the handset  will  flash. Tomake sure your phone rings whenthe Handset is away from the base.To answer a call when the handset isin the base, just pick up the handset.To answer a call when the handset isaway from the base, just press anykey on the handset (except OFF).DisconnectingTo end a call, either place the handsetback in the base, or press OFF onthe handset.by pressing TONE* key. You can thenpress the numbers or symbols youneed, and your phone will send theproper signals.To end the call, press OFF or placethe handset back in the base. Thephone will automatically go back torotary (pulse) service.Programming The Ringer TypeThe handset ringer is capable of fourdifferent types of ring tones. Tochange the ring tones or to turn theringer off, make sure the handset isOFF.• Press MEM/PROG.• Press the # key.• Press a key 1 through 4 to selecta ringer type. Or press 5 to turnthe ringer off.• Press the MEM key to confirm.Checking The RingerTo check which ringer is currentlyprogrammed:• Press MEM/PROG.• Press the # key.• Press 0.• Press the MEM key to confirmMemory DialingThe 2101 can store up to 10 differentphone numbers that you can dial justby pressing phone, MEM and one ofthe number keys (0-9).Programming Speed DialNumbersThe handset must be OFF.1. Press MEM/PROG.2. Press the number of the memorylocation you wish to store thenumber in (0-9).Using REDIALTo redial the last number you called,press ON then press REDIAL.Storing a Redial Number intoSpeed DialTo store the last number you dialedas a speed dial number, press MEM/PROG, a location number (0-9),REDIAL, MEM.The Page FeatureFrom the base unit, press PAGE tosignal the handset. To end the pageat the base, press PAGE again.  Toend the page at the handset, pressOFF.If the handset is in use ( off-hock)when PAGE is pressed on the baseunit, the handset will emit one pagealert. If the handset is not in use (on-hook), the page alert will continue forapproximately 60 seconds.If you have difficulty operating yourphone, the suggestions below shouldsolve the problem. If you still havedifficulty after trying thesesuggestions, call VTech Communi-cations at 1-800-595-9511. InCanada, call VTech Telecommuni-cations Canada Ltd. at 1-800-267-7377.The Phone Doesn't  Work at All.• Make sure the power cord isplugged in.• Make sure the telephone linecord is plugged firmly into thebase unit and the telephone walljack.• Make sure the batteries areproperly charged. If you get aLOW BATTERY message orindication, the batteries needcharging.No Dial Tone.• First try all the suggestionsabove.• If you still don't hear a dial tone,disconnect the base unit fromthe telephone jack and connecta different phone. If there is nodial tone on that phone either,the problem is in your wiring orlocal service. Contact your localtelephone company.You Get Noise, Static, or a WeakSignal Even When You're Near theBase Unit.Household appliances plugged intothe same circuit as the base unit cansometimes cause interference. If youhave rotary service, press MEM/PROG, * , # , MEM to switch toPULSE.NOTE: Your 2101 is preset at thefactory for TONE dialing.Temporary ToneIf you have a rotary (pulse) telephoneservice, (TONE/PULSE setting is setto PULSE), this feature allows you toenter special codes and tones tooperate answering machines,electronic banking services, or otherspecial services.First, dial the call normally. Thenactivate the temporary tone feature3. Using the dial pad, dial the numberyou want to store (maximum of 16digits). The number can beentered manually or by usingREDIAL.4. Press MEM to save.Speed Number Dialing1. Press ON.2. Press MEM and the memorylocation number key (0-9).For example, to dial the number youassigned to key 8, you would pressON, MEM, 8.To Change or Replace a SpeedDial NumberTo change or replace a storednumber in speed dial memory simplyenter the new number following theProgramming Speed Dial Numbersinstructions.Storing Pauses in MemoryTo insert a pause in a phone number,press REDIAL/PAUSE. Press MEM.You Get Noise, Static, or a WeakSignal When You're Away Fromthe Base Unit.• You may be out of range. Eithermove closer to the base, orrelocate the base unit.• The layout of your home may belimiting the range. Try movingthe base unit to another position.The Handset Does Not Ring WhenYou Receive a Call.• Make sure you have the ringeractivated. Refer to the section(s)on ringer selection in this UserManual.• Make sure the telephone linecord is plugged firmly into thebase unit and the telephone jack.Make sure the power cord isplugged in.• You may be too far from thebase unit.• You may have too manyextension phones on yourtelephone line to allow all ofthem to ring. Try unpluggingsome of the other phones.You Hear Other Calls WhileUsing Your PhoneDisconnect your base unit from thetelephone jack, and plug in a regulartelephone. If you still hear other calls,the problem is probably in yourwiring or local service. Call your localtelephone company.You Hear Noise In the Handset,and None of The Keys orButtons WorkMake sure the power cord isplugged in.78910 11Common Cure for ElectronicEquipmentIf the unit does not seem to beresponding normally, then try puttingthe handset in its base. If it does notseem to respond, do the  following(in the order listed):1. Disconnect the power to thebase.2. Disconnect the handset battery,and spare battery, if applicable.3. Wait a few minutes.4. Connect power to the base.5. Re-install the battery(ies).6. What does  this limited warrantycover?•The manufacturer of this VTechproduct,  VTech Communica-tions, warrants to the  holder ofa valid proof of purchase(“Consumer” or “you”) that theproduct and all accessoriesprovided by VTech in the salespackage (“Product”) are freefrom material defects in materialand workmanship, pursuant tothe following terms and conditions,when installed and used normallyand in accordance with operationinstructions. Repair instructionsIf this equipment is malfunctioning,it must be unplugged from themodular jack until the problem hasbeen corrected. Rights of the telephonecom panyIf this equipment is causingharm to the telephone network,the telephone company maytemporarily discontinue yourtelephone service.
