Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation. Toprotect it from overheating, these openings must not be blocked by placing the producton the bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface.  This product should never be placed nearor over a radiator or heat register. This product should not be placed in a built-in-installation where proper ventilation is not provided.7. This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on themarking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult yourdealer or local power company.8. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not locate this product where the cordwill be abused by persons walking on it.9. Slide the battery cover off by gentlypressing on the recessed area witha downward motion.2. Unplug and remove the old batterypack. Don't put the old battery packin a trash compactor or a fire - itcould burst.3. With the red and black wires at thebottom of the pack, angle the top ofthe battery into the compartment,under the two “claws”. Next, pressthe lower end of the battery packdown, so it is held in place by thelower claw. Now, plug the connectorinto the socket, located below thebattery. Slip the battery wires into thewire guide, located below and to theleft of the socket.4. In Canada, callVTECH Electronics at 1-800-267-7377.IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERY PACK5. The new battery pack must be charged before using your telephone. Placethe handset in the cradle of the base unit to allow it to charge for 16 hours.Maximum battery life between charges is more than 4.5 hours of continuoustalk time or 6 days of standby.CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire or injury, read and follow these instructions:1. Use only VTECH battery pack supplied, or equivalent..2. Do not open or mutilate the battery. Released electrolyte is corrosive andmay cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic if swallowed.3. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery withconducting materials such as rings, bracelets, and keys.  The battery orconductor may overheat and cause burns.4. Do not dispose of the battery in a fire. Choose an area near an electrical outlet and a telephone wall jack.2. Plug the AC power adapter into an electrical outlet and the DC connector tothe power jack on the bottom of the Base Unit. Insert the cord in the channelguide.CAUTION: Use only the AC adapter shipped with your VT9113. It  isspecifically designed for this product.NOTE: Connect power to the Base Unit before placing the handset in thecradle.3. CHARGE THE HANDSET BATTERY PACK BEFORE USE. The batteriesrecharge automatically whenever the Handset is in the Base Unit cradle.The batteries must be charged for 16 hours before using your phone forthe first time.4. Connect the telephone line cord. Insert one end of the telephone line cordinto the phone jack on the bottom of  the Base Unit. Plug the other end intoa telephone wall jack.  Make sure the plugs snap securely into place. Insertthe cord in the channel guide.5. CHECK FOR A DIAL TONE. After the battery pack is charged, pick up theHandset and press the ON key. The IN USE indicator should light up, andyou should hear a dial tone. If not, see IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY.CAUTION:1. Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.2. Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specificallydesigned for wet locations.3. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephoneline has been disconnected at the network interface.4. Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.ON LED• The  ON LED lights when theHandset is on an active call.• It flashes in cadence with anincoming ring.• It flashes quickly duringProgramming mode.• It flashes slowly when the batterypack is low.ON/ FLASH KEY• Press the ON key to make a call.• If you are currently on a call, andyou hear a call waiting tone,press ON to switch to the secondcall. Press ON again to return tothe original call.VOLUME  CONTROL• Adjust the volume of what youhear through the Handset.• While on a call, press the          or     key to adjust the listeningvolume. The Handset will emit adouble beep when the maximumor minimum volume level hasbeen reached.OFF KEY• Press the OFF key to exit allmodes of operation.GETTING STARTED HANDSET FEATURESREDIAL / PAUSE KEY• When you hear the dial tone,press the REDIAL to call the lastnumber dialed on your phone.• It can also be used to store thelast number dialed into the speeddial memory. See Storing aRedial Number into Speed Dialfor details.• You can store a PAUSE into yourdialing number. See StoringPauses in Memory for detail.CHAN KEY• Pressing the CHAN key when theHandset is in use will activate achannel change to the next freechannel.• This is used if you areexperiencing noise orinterference on the currentchannel.MEM/PROG KEY• Press the MEM key to enterMEMORY mode.• The sequence for dialing out aspeed dial number in memory is:ON, MEM, Number Button (0-9).• Press  MEN/PROG  to enterprogramming mode. BASE UNIT FEATURESIN USE/CHARGING LED• The LED illuminates steadily when theHandset is in the Base cradle toindicate that the Handset battery isbeing charged.• The LED illuminates whenever theHandset is being used.• This LED also flashes with thecadence of the incoming ring.PAGE KEY• Press the PAGE key to page theHandset.• Press it second time to cancel a page.• The Base will ring the Handset for 1minute before ending the pageautomatically.• The Handset can also cancel thepage by pressing the OFF key.Making CallsPick up the Handset  and press ON.When you hear a dial tone, dial thenumber. The ON LED will illuminatewhile the Handset is in use.If you make a mistake when dialing,press OFF to hang up, then pressON to get the dial tone again.You must always press ON beforeyou can dial a call on the Handset.Answering CallsWhen an incoming call is ringing, theIN USE LED on the Base and ONLED on the Handset will flash. Tomake sure your phone rings whenthe Handset is away from the Base,please keep the Base antenna in theupright position.To answer a call when the Handsetis in the Base, just pick up theHandset.To answer a call when the Handsetis away from the Base, just pressany key on the Handset (exceptTemporary ToneIf you have a rotary (dial-pulse)telephone service, (TONE/PULSEsetting is set to PULSE), this featureallows you to enter special codes andtones to operate answeringmachines, use electronic bankingservices, calling cards, or otherspecial services.First, dial the call normally. Thenactivate the Temporary Tone featureby pressing TONE (the * key). Youcan then press the numbers orsymbols you need, and your phonewill send the proper signals.To end the call, press OFF or placethe Handset back in the Base. Thephone will automatically go back torotary (dial-pulse) service.Programming The Ringer TypeThe Handset ringer is capable of fourdifferent types of ringing tones. Thefollowing sections detail how tochange the different tones and to turnoff a ringer on the Handset.To program, the Handset must beOFF.To select a different ringer type dothe following:• Press MEM/PROG.• Press the # key.• Press a key 1..4 to select a ringertype.• Press the MEM key to confirm.Turning Off The RingerTo turn off the ringer on the Handset,do the following:Speed Number Dialing1. Press ON to get a dial tone.2. Press  MEM and the memorylocation number key (0-9).For example, to dial the number youassigned to key '8', you would pressON, MEM, 8.To Change or Replace a SpeedDial NumberTo change or replace a storednumber in speed dial memory simplyenter the new number and store it inthe memory location you wish tochange.For example, to change the numberstored in memory position 7 to 555-1111, you would press MEM/PROG,7, 555-1111, MEM.Storing Pauses in MemoryTo insert a pause in a phone number,press REDIAL/PAUSE. The pause is2 seconds in length. For longerpauses, press REDIAL/PAUSE twoor more times. Each additional pressindicates an additional 2 secondpause.If your phone is connected to a PBXyou can store the PBX accessnumber and a pause before thephone number. For example, to store9-PAUSE-555-1234 in memorylocation 8 do the following:1. Press MEM/PROG2. Press 83. Press  94. Press REDIAL / PAUSE5. Dial 555-12346. Press MEMIf you have difficulty operating yourphone, the suggestions below shouldsolve the problem. If you still havedifficulty after trying thesesuggestions,In the US Call:VTECHCommunications at1-800-595-9511.In Canada Call:VTECH Electronics at1-800-267-7377.THE PHONE DOESN'T WORK ATALL.• Make sure the power cord isplugged in.• Make sure the telephone line cordis plugged firmly into the Base Unitand the telephone wall jack.• Make sure the batteries areproperly charged. If the Handsetmakes two beeps, the batteriesneed charging. If the IN USEindicators do not light when youpress ON, you must charge thebatteries.• If you recently installed a newbattery pack, make sure it isinstalled correctly.NO DIAL TONE.• First check all the suggestionsabove.• If you still don't hear a dial tone,disconnect the Base Unit from thetelephone jack and connect adifferent phone. If there is no dialtone on that phone either, theproblem is in your wiring or localservice. Call your local telephonecompany.OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSOPERATING INSTRUCTIONSIN CASE OF DIFFICULTYOPERATING INSTRUCTIONSOFF). This is very useful in a darkenvironment; you do not have tofumble around looking for the ON keyto answer the call.DisconnectingTo end a call, either place the Handsetback in the Base, or press OFF onthe Handset.Changing ChannelsIf you notice interference when usingyour Handset, press CHAN to switchto a clear  channel. This function isonly available when you are on a call.•TONE/PULSE SettingIf you have touch tone service onphone line. Press MEM/PROG, * , *,MEM to switch to TONE dialing. If youhave rotary service, press MEM/PROG, * , # , MEM to switch toPULSE.NOTE: Your VT9113 is preset at thefactory for TONE dialing.• Press MEM/PROG.• Press the # key• Press 5 to turn off the ringer• Press the MEM key to confirm• To turn the ringer on again, seeProgramming the Ringer Type.Checking The RingerTo check the ringer which is currentlyprogrammed, do the following:• Press MEM/PROG.• Press the # key• Press 0• Press the MEM key to confirmMemory DialingThe  VT9113 can store up to 10different phone numbers that you candial just by pressing phone, MEM andone of the number keys (0-9).Programming Speed DialNumbersThe Handset must be OFF.1. Press MEM/PROG. The ON LEDwill blink to indicate that you are inthe programming mode.2. Press the number of the memorylocation you wish to store thenumber in (0-9).3. Using the dial pad, dial the numberyou want to store. The numbercan be up to 16 digits long.  Thenumber can be entered manuallyor by using REDIAL.4. Press MEM to store the phonenumber to the key you selected.The phone now exits programmingmode and emits a tone.Using REDIALTo redial the last number you called,press ON then press REDIAL. Thephone will automatically dial thenumber.Storing a Redial Number intoSpeed DialTo store the last number you dialedas a Speed Dial number, press MEM/PROG, a location number (0-9),REDIAL, MEM.The Page FeatureFrom the Base Unit, press PAGE tosignal the person at the Handset. Toend the page at the base, pressPAGE again.  To end the page at theHandset, press OFF.If the Handset is in use ( off hock)when PAGE is pressed on the BaseUnit, the Handset will emit one pagealert. If the Handset is not in use (onhook), the page alert will continue forapproximately 60 seconds.This feature is useful in locating amisplaced Handset.YOU GET NOISE, STATIC, OR AWEAK SIGNAL EVEN WHENYOU'RE NEAR THE BASE UNIT.Household appliances plugged intothe same circuit as the Base Unit cansometimes cause interference. Trymoving the appliance or the Base Unitto another outlet.YOU GET NOISE, STATIC, OR AWEAK SIGNAL WHEN YOU'REAWAY FROM THE BASE UNIT.• You may be out of range. Eithermove closer to the Base, orrelocate the Base Unit.• The layout of your home may belimiting the range. Try moving theBase Unit to the second or thirdfloor, or to some other location.THE HANDSET DOES NOT RINGWHEN YOU RECEIVE A CALL.• Ensure that the ringer is turnedon.• Make sure the telephone line cordis plugged firmly into the Base Unitand the telephone jack. Makesure the power cord is pluggedin.• You may be too far from the BaseUnit.• You may have too manyextension phones on yourtelephone line to allow all of themto ring. Try unplugging some ofthe other phones.YOUR CALLER FADES IN ANDOUT.You may be nearly out of range. If you still hearother calls, the problem isprobably in your wiring or localservice. Call your local telephonecompany.YOU HEAR NOISE IN THEHANDSET, AND NONE OF THEKEYS OR BUTTONS WORK.• Make sure the power cord isplugged in.• Your Base Unit and Handset maynot be operating on the samechannel or security code. Placethe Handset in the cradle for afew moments to reload thesecurity code and reset thechannel.COMMON CURE FORELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTElectronics, like people, cansometimes get confused. If the unitdoes not seem to be respondingnormally, then try putting the Handsetin the cradle to re-initialize the unit.  Ifit still does not seem to respond,perform the following steps (in theorder listed):1. Disconnect the power to theBase.2. Disconnect the Handset batterypack.IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY63. Wait a few minutes.4. Connect power to the Base.5. Reconnect the Handset battery.6. Place the Handset in the BaseUnit cradle. If the Handset has notbeen recently charged, allow 8hours before use.
What does  this limited warrantycover?•The manufacturer of this VTECHproduct,  VTECH Communica-tions, warrants to the  holder ofa valid proof of purchase(“Consumer” or “you”) that theproduct and all accessoriesprovided by VTECH in the salespackage (“Product”) are freefrom material defects in materialand workmanship, pursuant tothe following terms and conditions,when installed and used normallyand in accordance with operationinstructions. This limited warrantyextends only to the Consumer forProducts purchased and used inthe United States of America.What will VTECHCommunications do if theProduct is not free from materialdefects in materials andworkmanship during the limitedwarranty period (“MateriallyDefective Product”)?• During the limited warranty period,VTECH’s authorized servicerepresentative will repair orreplace at VTECH’s option, withoutcharge, a Materially DefectiveProduct.
