No license is requiredfor operation on channels 8-14 or operation onany channel in Canada.INSTALL THE BATTERYYour GMR2059-2CK radio uses a supplied NiMHbattery pack or 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included).To install the NiMH battery pack:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Remove the battery compartment door by pressing the tab at the bottom of the compartment door, and remove the cover.USING THE RADIO• Power Boost Button forMaximum Range• Battery Charger• Battery Level Meter• Channel Monitor• Channel Scan• Keypad Lock• DC IN 9V Jack BATTERY LEVEL ANDLOW BATTERY ALERTThis unit has a battery level meter on the display to indicate the status of the batteries. When the battery in the unit is low, the battery level metericon  flashes. Recharge the NiMH batterypack immediately or, if you are using the alkalinebatteries, you must replace the alkaline batteries inorder to continue using the radio.Warning! To avoid the risk of personal injury orproperty damage from fire or electrical shock, onlyuse the Uniden accessories specifically designatedfor this product.GMR2059-2CK RADIOCHARGING THE RADIOIf you use the rechargeable NiMH battery pack, twoGMR2059-2CK radios can be charged directly or byusing the supplied charging cradle.Charge by Using the Radio1) Connect the DC adapter’s plug to the radio’sDC IN 9V jack and plug the other end into yourvehicle's accessory power outlet.2) Charge the battery pack for 16 hours until the battery indicator stop flashing.Using the Charging Cradle1) Connect the AC adapter’s plug to the radio’sDC IN 9V jack and plug the other end into an ACoutlet.2) Set the charging cradle on the desk or tabletop,and place the radio in the charging cradle withthe keypad facing forward.3) Make sure that the LED illuminates. Charge thebattery pack for 16 hours and remove the radiofrom the charging cradle after charge.Note:• For charging batteries directly without the cradle,use only the #DC-1002 Cigarette Lighter Adaptercord, available from www.Uniden.com.Other power cords could damage your radio.• DC IN 9V Jack of the radio is for charge only.Be sure to install the battery before charging.• Use only the supplied battery, AC or DC adapteror approved accessories from Uniden.3) Install the NiMH battery pack into the batterycompartment applying the battery contacts tothe lower charge contacts. Be certain to followthe instructions written on the label on the battery pack. Installing the battery pack incorrectly will prevent the unit from operating.4) Replace the battery compartment door.In order to get the most out of your new radio, readthis reference guide completely before attempting tooperate the unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Press and hold the  key to turn the radio ON,and increase the speaker volume by pressing the▲button. To decrease the volume, press the ▼button.2) Press and hold the  key again to turn theradio OFF.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio emits a beep each time one of the keys(except for the PTT and Power boost button andcall key) is pressed. To turn this sound OFF, pressand hold the call key while turning ON the radio.Repeat this step to turn the sound ON.Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 22 channels and 142 Privacy codesyou can use to talk to others. In order to speak to someone, each of you must be set to the same channel and Privacy Code.To choose a channel:With the radio in "Normal" operating mode pressthe chan tone/scan key and press the ▲or ▼button to increase or decrease the channel number displayed.Note: Channels 1-7 and 15-22 have a typical rangeof up to 20 miles by pressing the Power boostbutton. hi is displayed when you select a GMRSchannel, and lo is displayed when you select a FRSchannels.Choosing a Privacy CodeEach of the channels 1-22 may have any one of the codes, OFF or 1-142 selected. Code oF (OFF)indicates no Privacy Code selected and your radiocan receive a signal regardless of the code settingsof the transmitting radio.1) Press chan tone/scan in channel select mode.The privacy code indicator will flash.2) Press the ▲or ▼button to increase ordecrease the code number displayed.You canalso select oF (OFF) at this stage.3) Exit the Menu.Channel Scan FeatureYour GMR2059-2CK radio has a channel scan feature that allows you to easily scan all 22 channels. When an active channel is detected, theradio pauses on that channel until the channel isclear. Then after a 2 second delay, the radio continues scanning. Pressing the PTT and Powerboost button while the scan is paused on a channel allows you to transmit on that channel.To turn ON channel scan:Press and hold the chan tone/scan key until thescan... icon is displayed. The channel number onthe display changes as the radio rapidly cyclesthrough the channels.To turn OFF channel scan:Press the call,PTT,Power boost or menu key, orpress and hold the chan tone/scan key for 2 seconds.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speak in aclear, normal voice about 2-3 inches away fromthe microphone. While you are transmitting, theicon appears on the display. To avoid cuttingoff the first part of your transmission, pauseslightly after pressing the PTT button before youstart talking.2) When you have finished speaking, release thePTT button. You can now receive incoming calls.While receiving, the  icon appears on the display.Note: When you press the Power boost button,boost and  icon appear on the display. Theradio will transmit Maximum power when a GMRSchannel is selected. After one minute past whenthe boost transmission is established, the transmission stops automatically, and you will heara boost time out error tone.Warning! The typical range of GMRS channels canbe boosted only with NiMH batteries. When thePower boost key is pressed while using alkalinebatteries, hi icon appears instead of boost icon andthe range is not boosted.Monitor Mode FeatureYour GMR2059-2CK radio allows you to listen forweak signals on the current channel at the press ofa key.To turn ON the Monitor Mode:•For brief listening, press mon button. The icon blinks.•Press and hold mon button for 2 seconds untilltwo beeps sound for continuous listening. Thereceiver circuit stays open, letting both the noiseand weak signals to be heard.To turn OFF Monitor Mode:Press mon button to return to "Normal" mode,and the  icon stops blinking and disappears.Navigating through the MenuTo access the advanced features of the GMR2059-2CK, your radio has a Menu function.1) To enter the Menu, press the menu key.2) Additional presses of the menu key advancesyou through the Menu until exiting to "Normal"operating mode.3) Other methods of exiting the Menu function are:a. Press and hold the  key again.b. Press the PTT,Power boost,mon,call orchan tone/scan key.c. Wait 10 seconds until the unit automaticallyreturns to “Normal” mode.Setting ScrambleScramble feature allows you to make a private conversation. No one listening to your conversationcan understand what you are talking about. Be surethat your party also sets their radio to the scramblefeature.Note: Scramble only operates on FRS channels 8-14.To set Scramble:1) Enter the Menu.2) Select on using ▲or ▼ button.Voice Operated TransmissionYour GMR2059-2CK radio is equipped with a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX)  thatcan be used for automatic voice transmissions. TheVOX feature is designed to be used with a headsetwith a microphone. Transmission is initiated byspeaking into the remote microphone instead ofpushing the PTT and Power boost button.To select the VOX level:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe vox icon appears on the display. The currentlevel (OFF, 1-5) will be indicated. Level oF (OFF)disables VOX, while levels 1-5 set the sensitivityof the VOX circuit.2) Press either the ▲or ▼button to the desiredVOX sensitivity level. Use level 1 for increasedsensitivity to voice in normally quiet environments, and use a higher level to reduceundesired activation in very noisy environments.Transmitting a Call ToneYour GMR2059-2CK radio is equipped with 5 selectable call tones that are transmitted when thecall key is pressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe call icon is shown on the display. The currentcall tone number (1-5) is indicated.2) Press the ▲or ▼button to increase ordecrease the number to the desired call tone.Each tone will be heard through the speaker.To transmit the selected call tone, press the callkey. The selected tone will automatically be transmitted for a fixed length of time. Call Tone willbe cancelled when the PTT and Power boostbutton is pressed.Key LockTo lock the keypad:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe  icon appears on the display. The currentKey Lock status oF (OFF) blinks on the display.2) To switch the Key Lock mode from oF (OFF) toon, press the ▲button.3) To confirm the setting, press the menu key.The radio returns to the "Normal" mode.Note: If you exit the setting mode before confirmingyour selection by pressing the menu key, the KeyLock setting will be set to oF (OFF).To unlock the keypad:1) Press and hold the  key to turn the radio OFF.2) Press and hold the  key again to turn theradio ON. The keypad is unlocked.Automatic Power Save FeatureYour GMR2059-2CK radio has a unique circuitdesigned to dramatically extend the life of the bat-teries. If there is no transmission nor an incomingcall within 3 seconds, your radio switches to thePower Save mode. The radio is still able to receivetransmissions in this mode.LCD BacklightThe LCD Backlight automatically turns ON whenany key (except the PTT and Power boost button)is pressed. The LCD display illuminates for 10 sec-onds before turning OFF.• Charge time may vary depending on the batterylife remaining.• Do not recharge alkaline batteries. Doing so cancreate a safety hazard or damage the radio.• For fastest charging, turn off the radio beforecharging.• Battery must be installed for operation, evenfrom external power.• If battery Power is low, you cannot operate theradio even using external power. Allow the batteries to charge before using. Roger Beep can be heard through thespeaker when both Roger beep and Key Beep are setto ON. When Roger beep is set to ON and Key BeepOFF, Roger Beep will not be heard from the speakerbut it will be transmitted to your party.
