Choose the best locationBefore choosing a location for your new phone, read the INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONSincluded in the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.Here are some important guidelines you should consider:•Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the base antenna to a vertical position.•The location should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous power outlet whichis not switchable.•Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise such as motors andfluorescent lighting.•The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop, or mounted on a standard wall plate.B. Install the rechargeable battery pack into the handsetThe handset is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The battery rechargesautomatically when the handset is placed in the base unit.Charge the handset battery pack for at least 15-20 hours before using your new cordlesstelephone for the first time! To maximize the charge capacity of your battery pack, DO NOTplug the telephone cord into the base unit and wall jack until the battery is fully charged. NOTE: If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the telephone line, besure that installing the system does not disable your alarmequipment. If you have questions about what will disable youralarm equipment, contact your telephone company or a qualifiedinstaller.1) Press down on the handset battery case cover (use the fingerindention for a better grip) and slide the cover downward to remove.2) Plug the battery pack connector (red & black wires) into the small,black jack inside the battery compartment (the connector notches fitinto the grooves of the jack only one-way). Match the wire colors tothe polarity label in the battery compartment, connect the battery andlisten for a click to insure connection.3) Make certain you have made a good connection by slightly pulling onthe battery wires to insure that there is a secure connection. 35) Place the handset in the base with the keypad facingforward. Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the baseantenna to a vertical position.NOTE: • Use only the Uniden Battery (BT-905) suppliedwith your phone. Replacement batteries are alsoavailable through the Uniden Parts Department at(800) 554-3988, Monday thru Friday from 7:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. or online at www.uniden.comBattery use time (per charge)From fully charged•Up to seven hours continuous use•Up to fourteen days when the handset is in the standby modeLow Battery AlertWhen the battery pack is very low and needs to be charged, the phone is programmed toeliminate functions in order to save power. If the phone is not in use, the talk/batt low LEDflashes when the battery pack is low.If the phone is in use, the talk/batt low LED flashes and the handset beeps. Complete yourconversation as quickly as possible and return the handset to the base for charging.Cleaning the battery charging contactsTo maintain a good charge, it is important to clean the chargingcontacts on both the handset and base unit once a month. Use a dry cloth or a pencil eraser to clean. If the contactsbecome very dirty, using water only, dampen a cloth to cleanthe charging contacts. Then make sure to go back over thecharging contacts with a dry cloth before returning the handsetto the base to charge.NOTE: Even when the battery pack is not being used, it will gradually discharge over along period of time. For optimum performance, be sure to return the handset to thebase unit after each telephone call.C. Connect the base unit1) Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jackand a standard 120V AC wall outlet.2) Wrap the cord inside the molded wiring channelas shown.3) Set the base unit on a desk or tabletop, andplace the handset in the base unit.4) Make sure the charge/in use LED illuminates. If the LED does not illuminate, check to see thatthe AC adapter is plugged in and the handsetmakes good contact with the base chargingcontacts.NOTICE: Place the power cord so it does not create a trip hazard or where it couldbecome chafed and create a fire or electrical hazard.NOTE:•Use only the supplied AD-446 AC adapter. Do not use any other ACadapter.•Connect the AC adapter to a continuous power supply.•Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC adaptereasily.After installing the battery pack in the handset, charge your handset at least 15-20hours before plugging into the phone line. Making and Receiving CallsNOTE: • The redial/p key redials the last number dialed.•The redialed number can be up to 24 digits long.5) Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINEjack and a telephone outlet once the handset isfully charged.TIP: If your telephone outlet isn’tmodular, contact your telephonecompany for assistance.D. Choose the dialing modeMost phone systems use tone dialing which sends DTMF tones through the phone lines.However some phone systems still use pulse dialing such as in rural areas. The defaultsetting is tone dialing. Depending on your dialing system, set the mode as follows:1) Press and hold flash until you hear a confirmation tone.2) To set the dial mode for pulse dialing, press #. Or to set the dial mode for tone dialing,press */tone. A confirmation tone sounds to indicate the setting is complete.•If you are not sure of your dialing system, set for tone dialing. Make a trial call. If the callconnects, leave the setting as is, otherwise set for pulse dialing.•If your phone dialing system requires pulse dialing and you need to send DTMF tonesfor certain situations during a call, you may “switch-over” to tone dialing (Refer to “ToneDialing Switch-over”).NOTE: Make sure your battery pack is fully charged before choosing the dial mode.4Handset On BaseAnswer call When the phone rings, removethe handset from the base(AutoTalk).1) Remove the handset fromthe base and press talk.Make call 2) The talk/batt low LEDflashes and turns on.3) Listen for the dial tone.4) Dial the number.Hang up Press end or return the handset to the base (AutoStandby).1) Remove the handset fromthe base and press talk.Redial 2) Listen for the dial tone.3) Press redial/p to dial the lastdialed number.Ringer Mute NoneModularUsing Your PhoneHandset Off BasePress talk, any number key, */tone,or #(AutoTalk).1) Press talk.2) The talk/batt low LED flashesand turns on.3) Listen for the dial tone.4) Dial the number.1) Press talk.2) Listen for the dial tone.3)Press redial/pto dial the last dialednumber.Press endwhen ringing.EXP3240 12/18/2 11:06 AM Page 4
5TerminologyThroughout this manual, terms such as Standby and Talk Mode are used. Below is theterminology explanation.•Talk Mode - The handset is off the base and talk has been pressed enabling a dialtone.•Standby Mode - The handset is not in use, off the base, and talk has not been pressed.A dial tone is not present.Adjusting the Ringer and Earpiece VolumeRinger toneWhen the phone is in standby mode, pressing the vol/ring key on the handset selects thehandset ringer tone. There are two ringer tones. Continue pressing the vol/ring key tolisten to all tones. The phone keeps the last ringer tone setting selected.Earpiece volumeThe handset earpiece volume settings (Low, Medium and High) can only be adjusted duringa call. Press the vol/ring key repeatedly to select Low, Medium and High. When you hangup, the phone keeps the last volume setting selected.Ringer MuteThe end key can be used to temporarily mute the ringer tone. When the handset is off thebase and the phone is ringing, press the end key and the ringer tone will be temporarilysilenced. The ringer tone will return to normal starting with the next incoming call.Tone Dialing Switch-overSome telephone companies use equipment that requires pulsedialing (sometimes referred to as rotary dialing). If you need to entertone dialing digits, you can switch-over to tone dialing during the call.For example, entering your bank account number after you havecalled your bank.Initially make your call with the pulse dialing mode. Once your callconnects, press */tone. Enter the desired number. These digits willbe sent as tone dialing. This special number can be stored in amemory location. This is referred to as Chain Dialing. Once the callends, the tone mode is canceled and pulse dialing mode resumes.NOTE: The tone feature only applies when the dial mode is set to pulse.Traveling Out-of-RangeDuring a call, as you begin to move your handset too far from your base unit, noiseincreases. If you pass the range limits of the base unit, your call will terminate within 1 minute.Selecting a Different ChannelIf you encounter interference while using your phone, you can manually change the phone’schannel for clear operation. This function works only when the phone is in use.Press channel. The talk/batt low LED flashes, indicating the phone is changing to anotherchannel.EXP3240 12/18/2 11:06 AM Page 5
