www.national.com 4 (Confidential) Revision 1.2Geode™ SP3GX011.0 User InterfaceThe National Semiconductor WebPAD™ system’s tabletuser interface is simple and easy to use. It consists of aninteractive touch screen, scroll pad, and several user-con-figurable buttons. Speakers and a microphone are built in.Additionally, several ports have been added to the side ofthe tablet to allow for connectivity to USB devices such as,an external keyboard, headphones and an external micro-phone.The main way to interact with the tablet is through thetouch screen. Links and menus are accessed by touchingthe screen directly over their titles. Additionally, the touchscreen is sensitive enough to allow for handwriting recog-nition software to be used as a means of inputting charac-ters. The touch screen on the tablet works with any type ofpointer, from a stylus (included) to the simple touch of afinger. All of the buttons on the tablet, including the scroll pad,are user-configurable, except the power button. The usercan change the definition of the buttons by entering thesystem configuration mode (see section 2.0 "System Con-figuration"). Some of the buttons suggest clearly definedoperations, like the scroll pad, but the definitions arechangeable. To input text, whether for an email, search criteria, or toenter a URL, a virtual keyboard is available. The keypadworks the same as a normal keyboard and is accessedfrom the QNX menu button or the Virtual Keyboard taskbox at the bottom of the screen. The user touches thescreen just above the desired key and the letter appearsnext to the cursor.1.1 GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACEWhen the tablet finishes booting, the graphical user inter-face (GUI) is started, as shown in Figure 1. The GUI con-tains a window area and a task bar. The background ofthe window area contains an application launcher. Touch-ing either the icon or button beneath the icon invokes thedesired application. When applications are invoked, theirwindows reside in this area. The task bar contains a menu button and two icons in thelower right corner for the virtual keyboard and RF link sta-tus. The menu button is labeled “QNX” and offers the useranother method of launching applications. To use themenu, touch the QNX button and then the desired appli-cation.Touching either of the icons in the lower right corner startsthe corresponding application. Plug the AC adapter into the tablet tocharge the batteries. The tablet can be used during thecharging process. If the tablet still does not boot and the green LED flashesfor 5 seconds, the tablet has overheated. Allow the tabletto cool down and try again.4.2.2 RF Link Is DownIf the RF Link icon indicates the link is down, the radio inthe tablet is not able to communicate with the radio in thebase station. This problem can have several causes:1. First, make sure the base station has completelybooted. If it has not, wait for it to complete bootingand check to see if the icon has changed to indicatethe RF link is up.2. If the base station has completely booted but the RFlink icon indicates the link is still down, the radio in thetablet may not be receiving a strong enough signalfrom the base station. Either the distance betweenthe tablet and base station may be too great or inter-ference could be a factor. Try moving the tablet closerto the base station. If the icon has changed to indi-cate the RF link is up, operate the tablet closer to thebase station.Refer to the following only if using a DECT-based basestation:3. If the base station is DECT-based, run through theregistration process. If the tablet and base station arenot registered with each other, the system will notfunction properly. If registered, but still not working, please contact the service representative for assis-tance.Refer to the following only if using an Access Point basestation:3. If the radio in the tablet is still not communicating withthe radio in the base station, check the system IDs ofthe radios in both the base station and the tablet. These IDs must match. If they do not match, changethem to match. The default system ID is “NokiaWLAN”.4. To check the system ID on the tablet, refer to section2.3 "Radio Configuration Options".5. To check the system ID on the access point basestation:a. Disconnect the modem. Connect a null modemcable to the back of the base station.
