All Rights Reserved.Wireless ConsideraonsConnecon PerformanceA number of factors aect the performance of wireless connecon. Consider the following guidelines to ensure high-range and stable connecvity. 9Adjust your wireless devices so that the signal is traveling in a straight path, rather than at an angle. The more material the signal has to pass through the more signal you will lose. 9Keep the number of obstrucons to a minimum. Each obstrucon can reduce the range of a wireless device. Posion the wireless devices in a manner that will minimize the amount of obstrucons between them. 9Building materials can have a large impact on your wireless signal. In an indoor environment, try to posion the wireless devices so that the signal passes through less dense material such as dry wall. Dense materials like metal, solid wood, glass or even furniture may block or degrade the signal. 9Antenna orientaon can also have a large impact on your wireless signal. Use the wireless adapter’s site survey tool to determine the best antenna orientaon for your wireless devices. 9Interference from devices that produce RF (radio frequency) noise can also impact your signal. Posion your wireless devices away from anything that generates RF noise, such as microwaves, radios and baby monitors. 9Any device operang on the 2.4GHz frequency will cause interference. Devices such as 2.4GHz cordless phones or other wireless remotes operang on the 2.4GHz frequency can potenally drop the wireless signal. Although the phone may not be in use, the base can sll transmit wireless signal. Move the phone’s base staon as far away as possible from your wireless devices. If you are sll experiencing low or no signal consider reposioning the wireless devices or installing addional access points. The use of higher gain antennas may also provide the necessary coverage depending on the environment.Security ChecklistWireless networks are easy to install and convenient to use. However, wireless network signals can also be intercepted easily. To prevent unauthorized users from connecng to your wireless network, follow the guidelines below. 9Change the default wireless network nameYour device has a default Service Set Idener (SSID) which is the wireless network name. Change the SSID with a unique name to idenfy your network. The SSID can be up to 32 characters in length. 9Change the default passwordYour device has a default password. You have to enter this password to change your network sengs. Change the password to prevent unauthorized users from hacking into your network and changing the sengs. 9Enable MAC address lteringYour device supports Media Access Control (MAC) address ltering. You can assign a MAC address on each computer that you want to connect to your wireless network. When MAC address ltering is enabled, only the computers with the specied MAC addresses are allowed access. 9Enable encryponYour device supports Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WAP/WPA2) encrypon. To ensure a high level of security, enable the highest security encrypon and use strong passphrases, avoid using words that can be found in the diconary.

The rule of the thumb is to choose single mode if your devices all work in the same mode. Mixed mode increases compability, but somemes lowers the data speed.or• Channel Width: Select the appropriate channel width for your wireless network. 20 MHz: This mode operates using a single 20MHz channel for wireless devices connecng at 802.11n on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. This seng may provide more stability than Auto 20/40MHz for connecvity in busy wireless environments where there are several neighboring wireless networks in the area. Auto 20/40MHz: When Auto 20/40MHz is acve, this mode is capable of providing higher performance only if the wireless devices support the channel bandwidth sengs. Enabling Auto 20/40MHz typically results in substanal performance increases when connecng an 802.11n client. The 40 MHz channel width allows for twice the usable radio spectrum to transmit data, doubling performance compared to a normal 20 MHz channel width.

Otherwise, check auto to select the channel automacally which is selected by default. (When you choose 20/40MHZ or 40MHz channel HT mode, the channel selecon list is shorter. Four marginal channels are reserved for channel expansion.)• AP Detecon: Before you setup your TEW-821DAP wireless sengs, you may want to know what signal are currently broadcasng. Click Scan to do a site survey and list the running access points around you.• Current Prole: General setups opons for your 2.4GHz / 5GHz wireless connecon. You can setup up to eight SSIDs for dierent groups of users. All Rights Reserved.Wireless Networking and SecurityTips to Improve Wireless ReceponThere are a number of factors that can impact the range of wireless devices. Follow these ps to help improve your wireless connecvity:• Keep the number of obstrucons to a minimum. Each obstrucon can reduce the range of a wireless device. Posion the wireless devices in a manner that will minimize the amount of obstrucons between them. 9For the widest coverage area, install your access point near the center of your home, and near the ceiling, if possible. 9Avoid placing the access point on or near metal objects (such as le cabinets and metal furniture), reecve surfaces (such as glass or mirrors), and masonry walls. 9Any obstrucon can weaken the wireless signal (even non-metallic objects), so the fewer obstrucons between the access point and the wireless device, the beer. 9Place the access point in a locaon away from other electronics, motors, and uorescent lighng. 9Many environmental variables can aect the access point’s performance, so if your wireless signal is weak, place the access point in several locaons and test the signal strength to determine the ideal posion.• Building materials can have a large impact on your wireless signal. In an indoor environment, try to posion the wireless devices so that the signal passes through less dense material such as dry wall. Dense materials like metal, solid wood, glass or even furniture may block or degrade the signal.• Antenna orientaon can also have a large impact on your wireless signal. Use the wireless adapter’s site survey tool to determine the best antenna orientaon for your wireless devices.• Interference from devices that produce RF (radio frequency) noise can also impact your signal. Posion your wireless devices away from anything that generates RF noise, such as microwaves, radios and baby monitors. If possible, upgrade wireless network interfaces (such as wireless cards in computers) from older wireless standards to 802.11n or 802.11ac. If a wirelessly networked device uses an older standard, the performance of the enre wireless network may be slower. If you are sll experiencing low or no signal consider reposioning the wireless devices, installing addional access points or wireless extenders.
TRENDnet User’s GuideTEW-821DAP18© Copyright 2015 TRENDnet. All Rights Reserved.Choose the Security Type for Wireless NetworkSeng up wireless security is very important. Leaving your wireless network open and unsecure could expose your enre network and personal les to outsiders. TRENDnet recommends reading through this enre secon and seng up wireless security on your new access point. There are a few dierent wireless security types supported in wireless networking each having its own characteriscs which may be more suitable for your wireless network taking into consideraon compability, performance, as well as the security strength along with using older wireless networking hardware (also called legacy hardware). It is strongly recommended to enable wireless security to prevent unwanted users from accessing your network and network resources (personal documents, media, etc.).In general, it is recommended that you choose the security type with the highest strength and performance supported by the wireless computers and devices in your network. Please review the security types to determine which one you should use for your network.Wireless Encrypon Types• WEP: Legacy encrypon method supported by older 802.11b/g hardware. This is the oldest and least secure type of wireless encrypon. It is generally not recommended to use this encrypon standard, however if you have old 802.11 b or 802.11g wireless adapters or computers with old embedded wireless cards(wireless clients), you may have to set your access point to WEP to allow the old adapters to connect to the access point. ÍNote: • This encrypon standard will limit connecon speeds to 54Mbps.• WPA: This encrypon is signicantly more robust than the WEP technology. Much of the older 802.11g hardware was been upgraded (with rmware/driver upgrades) to support this encrypon standard. Total wireless speeds under this encrypon type however are limited to 54Mbps.• WPA-Auto: This seng provides the access point with the ability to detect wireless devices using either WPA or WPA2 encrypon. Your wireless network will automacally change the encrypon seng based on the rst wireless device connected. For example, if the rst wireless client that connects to your wireless network uses WPA encrypon your wireless network will use WPA encrypon. Only when all wireless clients disconnect to the network and a wireless client with WPA2 encrypon connects your wireless network will then change to WPA2 encrypon. ÍNote: • WPA2 encrypon supports 802.11n speeds and WPA encrypon will limit your connecon speeds to 54Mbps.• WPA2: This is the most secure wireless encrypon available today, similar to WPA encrypon but more robust. This encrypon standard also supports the highest connecon speeds. TRENDnet recommends seng your access point to this encrypon standard. If you nd that one of your wireless network devices does not support WPA2 encrypon, then set your access point to either WPA or WPA-Auto encrypon. ÍNote: • Check the specicaons of your wireless network adapters and wireless appliances to verify the highest level of encrypon supported.Below is brief comparison chart of the wireless security types and the recommended conguraon depending on which type you choose for your wireless network.Security Standard WEP WPA WPA2Compable Wireless StandardsIEEE 802.11a/b/g (802.11n devices will operate at 802.11g to connect using this standard)IEEE 802.11a/b/g(802.11n devices will operate at 802.11g to connect using this standard)IEEE 802.11a/b/g/nHighest Performance Under This SengUp to 54Mbps Up to 54Mbps Up to 300MbpsEncrypon Strength Low Medium HighAddional Opons Open System or Shared Key,HEX or ASCII,Dierent key sizesTKIP or AES, Preshared Key or RADIUSTKIP or AES, Preshared Key or RADIUSRecommended ConguraonOpen System ASCII13 charactersTKIPPreshared Key8-63 charactersAESPreshared Key8-63 characters* Dependent on the maximum 802.11n data rate supported by the device (150Mbps, 300Mbps)

ÍNote: By default, your access point is congured with a predened wireless network name (SSID) and security key using WPA-Personal. The predened wireless network name and security can be found on the scker on the side of the access point or on the device label at the boom of the access point.1 Log into your access point management page (refer to “Log in to Management Page” on page 10).2 In Current Prole secon, click Edit next to the wireless prole to select the wireless security type.3 In Wireless Security secon, select the preferred Security Mode:• Select between WPA-OPEN, WPA-SHARED, or WPA-AUTO. WPA-OPEN system allows any client to authencate as long as it conforms to any MAC address lter policies that may have been set. All authencaon packets are transmied without encrypon. WPA-SHARED Key sends an unencrypted challenge text string to any device aempng to communicate with the AP. The device requesng authencaon encrypts the challenge text and sends it back to the access point. If the challenge text is encrypted correctly, the access point allows the requesng device to authencate. It is recommended to select WPA-AUTO if you are not sure which authencaon type is used. Click Apply to save the changes. Default Key: You may choose one of your four dierent WEP keys from below. WEP Key 1 to 4: Enter the WEP key. This is the password or key that is used to connect your computer to this access point wirelessly. You can enter four dierent WEP keys. HEX / ASCII: Select your key format to be in hexadecimal or ASCII codes. Keys are dened by entering in a string in HEX (hexadecimal - using characters 0-9, A-F) or ASCII (American Standard Code for Informaon Interchange - alphanumeric characters) format. ASCII format is provided so you can enter a string that is easier to remember.• If the security type is set to WPA-Personal, review the WPA-Personal sengs to congure and click Apply to save the changes. Security Mode: Select the WPA security type. WPA Cipher: Select the encrypon algorithm used to secure the data communicaon. TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) provides per-packet key generaon and is based on WEP. AES (Advanced Encrypon Standard) is a very secure block based encrypon. With the “TKIP and AES” opon, the device negoates the cipher type with the client, and uses AES when available.

This security type is also known as EAP (Extensible Authencaon Protocol) or Remote Authencaon Dial-In User Service or RADIUS. ÍNote: This security type requires an external RADIUS server, Shared Secret only requires you to create a passphrase. Key Update Interval: Specify how oen the wireless key should be renegoated. Shorter me intervals are more secure, but cause more overhead.(Default: 3600 seconds/ 1 hour). IP Address: Enter the IP address of the RADIUS server. (i.e. 192.168.10.250) Port: Enter the port your RADIUS server is congured to use for RADIUS authencaon. ÍNote: It is recommended to use port 1812 which is typical default RADIUS port. Shared Secret: Enter the shared secret used to authorize your access point with your RADIUS server.Connect Wireless Devices to your Access PointA variety of wireless network devices can connect to your wireless network such as:• Gaming Consoles• Internet enabled TVs• Network media players• Smart Phones• Wireless Laptop computers• Wireless IP camerasEach device may have its own soware ulity for searching and connecng to available wireless networks, therefore, you must refer to the User’s Manual/Guide of your wireless client device to determine how to search and connect to this access point’s wireless network.Connect Wireless Devices using WPSWPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a feature that makes it easy to connect devices to your wireless network. If your wireless devices support WPS, you can use this feature to easily add wireless devices to your network. ÍNote: You will not be able to use WPS if you set the SSID Broadcast seng to Disabled or if you are using WEP security. Please note that WPS funconality will only be available when the Device Mode is set to Access Point mode under Main > Device Mode. There are two methods the WPS feature can easily connect your wireless devices to your network.• Push Buon Conguraon (PBC) method (“PBC (Soware/Virtual Push Buon)” on page 38). • PIN (Personal Idencaon Number) method (“PIN (Personal Idencaon Number)” on page 39). ÍNote: Refer to your wireless device documentaon for details on the operaon of WPS.

WDS may not work with other products due to its non-standard nature.WDS stands for Wireless Distribuon System, a non-standard extension to the IEEE 802.11 standard to allow transparent Ethernet bridging on the staon and to implement seamingless hand-over for wireless clients roaming between dierent access points.WDS links create transparent bridges facilitate layer 2 seamless communicaon. You don’t have to use WDS if you don’t need layer 2 services passing through TEW-821DAP, such as MAC ltering, and 802.1X authencaon. You can simply use AP, Client Bridge, and Repeater mode to t most of your network plan. The 802.11 standard only uses three MAC addresses for frames transmied between the Access Point and the Staon. Frames transmied from the staon to the AP don’t include the Ethernet source MAC address of the requesng host and response frames are missing the desnaon Ethernet MAC to address the target host behind the client bridge.WDS AP and WDS Staon uses the 4 MAC address including complete source, desnaon, WDS AP, and WDS Staon addresses. Data frame arriving WDS AP or WDS Staon will be translated back to 802.3 data frame with real source address instead of WDS AP or WDS Staon address. The 4 addresses design keeps the original data frame intact bridging to the other side transparently. You have to use mulple TEW-821DAPs to build WDS AP - WDS Staon pair or WDS bridge mesh groups. Dierent model with same or dierent brand name may NOT work together because of the dierent WDS implementaon details.WDS BridgeIn this mode, the selected interface wirelessly communicate to other WDS bridges to make a wireless backbone. You can make a simple mesh network with these WDS bridges. To build a WDS link, you have to list the neighbor’s BSSID (the MAC address) as next hop packet forwarding. Your neig, vice versa, has to list your BSSID (the MAC Address) as its next hop. Make sure all access points are congured with the same SSID as a single DS (distribuon system), wireless channel and wireless encrypon sengs have to be the same as well.

Seng transmission power to an appropriate value can make your mulple AP deployment easier. The default value is 18 dBm. Valid sengs are between 11 and 18 (both FCC and CE).• RTC/CTS Threshold: Packets over the specied size will use the RTS/CTS mechanism to maintain performance in noisy networks and to prevent hidden nodes from degrading the performance. Specify a value between 1 and 2346. The default value is 2346.• Beacon Period: Beacons are packets sent by the access point to synchronize wireless devices. Specify a Beacon Period value between 100 and 1000. The default value is set to 100 milliseconds.• DTIM: A DTIM is a countdown informing clients of the next window for listening to broadcast and mulcast messages. When the access point has buered broadcast or mulcast messages for associated clients, it sends the next DTIM with a DTIM Interval value. Wireless clients detect the beacons and awaken to receive the broadcast and mulcast messages. The default value is 1. Valid sengs are between 1 and 255.• Fragment Threshold: This seng should remain at its default value of 2346. Seng the Fragmentaon value too low may result in poor performance.• Short Preamble: Disable this feature if you do not want the access point to use it at data transfer.4 In HD Physical Mode secon, modify any of the following parameters:• Guard Interval: Using a short (400ns) guard interval can increase throughput. However, it can also increase error rate in some installaons, due to increased sensivity to radio-frequency reecons. Select the opon between Auto and Long that works best for your installaon.• A-MPDU: MPDU aggregaon also collects Ethernet frames to be transmied to a single desnaon, but it wraps each frame in an 802.11n MAC header. Normally this is less ecient than MSDU aggregaon, but it may be more ecient in environments with high error rates, because of a mechanism called block acknowledgement. This mechanism allows each of the aggregated data frames to be individually acknowledged or retransmied if aected by an error5 In Client Limit secon, check Enable if you want to limit the number of clients and set the maximum number of clients that can connect to TEW-821DAP. If you do not want to use this feature, check Disable.
