22standard usage modes wit h the phones transmitting at their maximum power level over the entire range of frequency bands. Although the SAR was established at the highest certified level, the actual SAR level for the modem duri ng use i s generally much lower than the maxi mum values. In fact, si nce modems are desi gned to operate at many different power levels, they only use the minimum level of power required to provide a connection to the network . In theory, the closer you are to a base stati on antenna, the lower the power level required by the modem. The highest tested SAR value for this modem compliance against the standard is 1.0 W/kg for use at the ear and 1.5W/kg for use closed to the body distance of 5mm . While there may be difference b etween the SA R lev els on v arious modems and at various posi tions, they a ll m eet the r elevant I nternational guidelines and EU requirement for RF (radio-waves) exposure. For body-worn operation, the modem meets EU exposure guidelines provided that it is used with a non-metallic accessory with the handset at least 1.5cm from the body. The World Healt h Organisation (WHO) consi ders t hat present sci entific information does not indi cate the need for any special precautions for use o f Modems. Radio Waves: Proof o f compliance wit h international s tandards (ICNIRP) or wi th European Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE) is required of all modem models before they can be put on the market. The protection of the health and safety for the user and any ot her person i s an essenti al requ irement of these st andards or t his directive. THIS MODEM COMPLIES WITH INTERNATIONAL AND E UROPEAN REQUIREMENTS REGARDING EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES. The Modem is a radio transmitter/receiver. It was designed and manufactured to comply with the radiofrequency (RF) exposure thresholds recommended by international r equirements (ICNIRP)1 and by the C ouncil of the European Union (Recommendation 1999/519/EC)2 . These li mits are part of a set of req uirements and establi sh authori sed radiofrequency lev els for the publi c. These li mits were establi shed by independent groups of expert s on the basis of regular and det ailed scientific assessments. They i nclude a si gnificant safety margin intended to ensure t he safety of all, regardless of age or state of health. The expos ure st andard for modems i s determi ned by a meas urement unit known as the Speci fic Absorption Rate o r “SA R”. The SA R limit is set by international r equirements or by the Co uncil of the European Union at 2 watts/kilogram (W/kg) averaged over 10 grams of body tissue. The t ests used t o det ermine SA R lev els w ere ca rried out on the bas is of 1 The ICNIRP requirements are applicable in the following regions: Central America (except Mexico), South America, North and South Africa, Pacific Asia (except Korea), Australia. 2 The European recommendation (1999/519/EC) is applicable in the following regions: Europe, Israel.
25standard usage modes wit h the phones transmitting at their maximum power level over the entire range of frequency bands. Although the SAR was established at the highest certified level, the actual SAR level for th e Modem during use is generally much lower than the maxi mum values. In fact , si nce Modems are desi gned to operate at ma ny different power levels, they only use the minimum level of power required to provide a connection to the network . In theory, the closer you are to a base stati on antenna, the lower the power level required by the modem. The highest tested SAR value for this modem compliance against the standard is 1. 0 W/kg for use at the ear and 1.5W/kg for use closed to the body at a distance of 5mm . While there ma y be difference between the SA R levels on various m odems an d at various positi ons, they all meet the rele vant International guidelines and EU requirement for RF (radio-waves) exposure. If individuals are concerned, they might choose to limit their own or their children’s RF exposure by limiting the length of calls, or using “hands-free” devices to keep modems away from the head and body (fact sheet n° 193). Additional information about ele ctromagnetic f ields a nd publi c health are available on the following site: http://www.who.int/peh-emf. Although no danger relating to the use of modem was ever proved, the World Health Organi sation advises as a precaut ionary me asure to use the modem with a good level of network reception as indicated on the software display (4 to 5 bars ). It is also advi sed t o keep t he modem , duri ng communi cations, away from the be lly of pregnant women and from the lower abdomen for teenagers. The mode m i s equ ipped wi th a bui lt-in ant enna. For optimal operati on, you should avoid touching it or degrading it.
