Read and retain manual. Read the entire Owner’s Manual before using your Outdoor Shields Plus. If you have any questions after reading this manual, call your Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer. Dealer Name: _______________________ Dealer Phone: _______________________ 2. Train your pet according to the instructions contained in this manual. Do not become overly confident your pet has become conditioned to the Outdoor Shields Plus system sooner than expected. 3. Adhere to all cautions and warnings contained in any Invisible Fence® Brand manual. 4. Never perform set-up procedures while the Computer Collar® unit is on your pet. 5. All Invisible Fence® Brand products are designed for pet use only. Never attempt to use this product for any purpose not specifically described in this manual. 6. Check the tightness of the Computer Collar® unit on a regular basis. Remove your pet’s Computer Collar® unit each night. This will prevent the possibility of any irritation the collar may cause to your pet’s skin. However, if this is not possible, please check the tightness of the collar each time you feed your pet by removing the collar and then replacing it back on your pet. A condition called Pressure Necrosis, which is a devitalization of the skin due to excessive and prolonged contact against the Contact Points, may occur if the steps above are not followed.8. If you have any questions about any aspect of your Invisible Fence® Brand pet containment system, call your Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer immediately.
www.invisiblefence.com 3 7. Do not attempt to service any Invisible Fence® Brand equipment. Refer all service to your authorized Invisible Fence® Brand Dealer only. Unauthorized service or repair will void the warranty. Note: The low battery indicator will begin flashing when it is time to replace the batteries. An Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter producing less than the maximum setting will get a substantially longer battery life. Components • Outdoor Shields Plus Transmitter • Owner’s Manual How the System Works The Outdoor Shields® Plus Transmitter is disguised as a rock and can be placed in your landscape or in areas you want to shield your pet from. It sends a signal field up to 10 feet in diameter or a 5 foot radius. Your pet wears a Computer Collar® unit that detects areas you have shielded and administrates a correction when your pet enters those areas. The Outdoor Shields® Plus Transmitter has two control buttons and a LCD display. The two buttons control the signal field range and 7K or 10K frequencies. The LCD display shows the signal field range, low battery and either 7K or 10K frequencies. The Outdoor Shields® Plus Transmitter is powered by 4 alkaline D-batteries (not included). Under normal conditions, the batteries will operate the transmitter for up to one year. Check the LCD display every month to see if the Low Battery indicator is displayed. The Outdoor Shields® Plus Transmitter is water-resistant but cannot be submersed in water. Note: A correction is a training term used to describe an action taken to discourage unwanted pet behavior. The Computer Collar® unit applies a correction when your pet enters a shielded area or crosses the boundary of an Invisible Fence® Brand electronic pet containment system. Corrections are used in combination with training and rewards to alter unwanted pet behavior. Worn by your pet, the Computer Collar® unit detects areas you have shielded and administers a correction when your pet enters those areas.
www.invisiblefence.com 4 Operating Guide Important: Make sure your pet is not wearing the Computer Collar® unit when turning on the Outdoor Shields® transmitter. 1. Power up the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter • Locate the battery door on the bottom of the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter. Loosen the 4 Phillips head screws. The screws will stay in the battery lid. Install 4 alkaline D-batteries (Not Included) and replace the battery door. • Turn the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter upright and open the lid exposing the LCD display and range buttons. • Press the up (+) button once to turn ON the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter. 2. Adjust signal field range • Determine the desired location and the signal field range required a minimum radius 1 foot (30 cm) and a maximum radius up to 5 feet (1.5 m). • With the unit on, press the RANGE UP (+) or the RANGE DOWN (-) buttons to increase or decrease the signal field range. Each segment of displayed bar represents approximately 1 foot (30 cm) radius of range. • Once the range is set, place the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter in the desired area. 3. Verify the signal field range • Make sure the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter is on. • Holding the Computer Collar® unit, start outside the range and walk slowly towards the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter. Do not touch the correction posts at this time. • The Computer Collar® unit will beep as it approaches the outer range of the signal field width set in step 2. The beeping will be followed by a correction. • If the Computer Collar® unit fails to beep, see the troubleshooting chart. • Adjust range and/or relocate the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter until desired area is protected. 4. Selecting either 7K or 10K on the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter • Open the lid exposing the LCD display and buttons. • Make sure the range is all the way down. • Press the (-) down button and hold it for 5 seconds until a black segment appears in the display. • Once the black segment appears you have 5 seconds to change between 7K or 10K. • Pressing only the (+) button to change between 7K or 10K. • When the black segment is displayed by the (-) button = 10K and by the (+) button = 7K. • Once you have selected either 7K or 10K the display will return blank after 5 seconds. • You are now ready to adjust the range to the desired area.
www.invisiblefence.com 5 5. Checking for low battery • Open the lid exposing the LCD display and buttons. • If the LCD display is flashing with all six black segments showing it is time to replace the batteries. • After replacing the batteries you will need to check and see if the range for the signal field is set to the desired area. 6. Connect the Wires to the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter • Make sure the Range is all the way down • Remove the battery door from the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter by loosening the 4 Phillips head screws. Remove the 4 D-batteries if you had already placed them inside the transmitter. • Locate the switch inside the battery cavity. This switch allows the Outdoor Shields Plus transmitter to operate as a wireless (internal antenna) or wired (external antenna) unit. Move the switch to the “External” option so that the signal is sent through the wire • Using the wire stripping pliers, strip about ¼ inch of insulation from the ends of the Boundary Wire. Use pliers to bend each end of the wire to form a 90 degree angle • Place one end of the Boundary Wire into the Boundary Wire Channel on the Outdoor Shields Plus® transmitter. The wire should touch the threads of one of the screws in the channel. Once you have placed the wire, tighten the screw. Repeat this step to connect the other end of the boundary wire to the opposite side of the second screw. Make sure the bare wires do not touch each other. •Place the batteries back into the transmitter and carefully bend the wires so they fit through the groove on the battery door. Be careful not to pull or tug on the wires once you have placed them in the channels. • Screw the battery door in place and position the Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter in your landscape. 7. Selecting & Changing Multi-Area Shielding Your Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter and the Computer Collar® unit are preset to operate on Channel A (Chnl A). For homes with two or more pets, this setting is usually sufficient, as long as all pets are required to avoid the same shielded areas, like keeping all pets out of the kitchen, away from the trash (rubbish), off the sofa, etc. In some multi-pet homes, it may be desired to allow one pet access to an area while denying access to another. When set to Channel A (Chnl A), Shields® denies access to pets wearing a Computer Collar® unit programmed to Channel A. (Chnl A is the default setting for the Computer Collar® unit.) When set to Channel B (Chnl B), Shields® denies access to pets wearing a Computer Collar® unit programmed to Channel B. When set to Channel A (Chnl A) and Channel B (Chnl B), Shields® denies access to all pets wearing a Computer Collar® unit.
www.invisiblefence.com 6 Changing the Channel Setting on the Shields® Transmitter • Make sure the Range is all the way down. • Remove the battery door from the Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter by loosening the 4 Phillips head screws. Remove the 4 D-batteries if you had already placed them inside the transmitter. • Select the desired Channel or Channels from the Channel (Chnl) Chart inside the upper battery cavity. • Locate switches 1 & 2 inside the lower battery cavity. • Move switches 1 & 2 to the up or down position to select the desired Channel or Channels. 8. Selecting & Changing the Reaction Rate on the Outdoor Shields® Plus Changing the Reaction Rate setting on the Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter will change two things. 1. It will change how fast or slow the Computer Collar® unit reacts to the signal output from the Outdoor Shields® transmitter. 2. The battery life will depend on how fast or slow the Reaction Rate setting is from the Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter. i.e. Slow = up to 12 months, Fast = up to 4 months. • Make sure the Range is all the way down. • Remove the battery door from the Outdoor Shields® Plus transmitter by loosening the 4 Phillips head screws. Remove the 4 D-batteries if you have previously placed them inside the transmitter. • Select the desired Rate on the Chart inside the upper battery cavity. • Locate switch’s 3 & 4 inside the lower battery cavity. • Move switches 3 & 4 to the up or down position to select the desired Reaction Rate.
