It is placed in areas you want to shield from your pet. Thelightweight, portable design is easy to use and powered by a rechargeable battery pack. You may usethe included AC adapter for locations near an electrical outlet.The Shields™transmitter has three control buttons:Two for controlling the signal field range (RANGE UP & RANGE DOWN)One for use when programming for multiple pets (CHANNEL)The LCD display shows the signal field range and multi-area shielding selections.Invisible Fence®Brand Titanium Computer Collar®UnitWorn by your pet, the Titanium Computer Collar®unit detects areas you have shielded and adminis-ters a “correction”.AC AdapterThis is included for long-term use, or as a charger for the rechargeable battery pack.Shields™TransmitterNOTE: A correction is a training term used to describe an action taken to discourage unwantedpet behavior. The Computer Collar®unit applies a correction when your pet enters a shieldedarea or crosses the boundary of an Invisible Fence®Brand pet containment system. Correctionsare used in combination with rewards to alter unwanted pet behavior.

It is strongly recommended youreview this information before using theproduct.Information About YourShields™Indoor AvoidanceSystemShields™gives you control over the areas apet or pets have access to inside your home.It is designed to work independently, or tocomplement your Invisible Fence®Brand 800Series outdoor pet containment system.Benefits of the Shields™system include:Flexibility: Uses the same Invisible Fence®Brand Titanium Computer Collar®unit forboth indoor avoidance and outdoor pet con-tainment Portability: Shields™is powered by arechargeable battery pack. It can be placedvirtually anywhere, on chairs, under tables,by the trash, etc. (An AC adapter is includedwith every Shields™system).Adjustable: The Shields™system allows youto control the width of the signal field rangewith the touch of a button. The signal field isthe area around the Shields™transmitter youwant your pet to avoid. The signal field rangecan be set to a minimum diameter of 2 feetup to a maximum diameter of 12 feet.Customization: The Multi-Area shieldingoption allows you to choose/change differentshielded areas for different pets.For example:You can program one Shields™sys-tem to keep pet 1 away from pet 2’sfood dish, ANDProgram a second Shields™systemto keep both pets away from thetrashSee the section labeled Shields™Multi-AreaUse for detailed instructions.Important PrecautionsRead and retain manual: Read the entireOwner’s Manual before using your Shields™indoor avoidance system. Do notbecome overly confident your pet has becomeconditioned to the Shields™indoor avoidancesystem sooner than expected.Obey all cautions and warnings: Adhere to allcautions and warnings contained in any InvisibleFence®Brand manual.Never perform set-up procedures while theTitanium Computer Collar®unit is on your pet.Use only on pets: All Invisible Fence®Brandproducts are designed for pet use only. Neverattempt to use this product for any purpose notspecifically described in this manual.Check the tightness of the Titanium ComputerCollar®unit on a regular basis: When possible,remove your pet’s Titanium Computer Collar®uniteach night. This will prevent the possibility of anyirritation the collar may cause to your pet’s skin.However, if this is not possible, please check thetightness of the collar each time you feed yourpet by removing the collar and then replacing itback on your pet.Call for service or repair: Do not attempt to serv-ice any Invisible Fence®Brand equipment. Turn the Shields™transmitter ON bypressing the RANGE UP (+) button.b. A segmented bar appears in the display.c. To turn the Shields™transmitter off,press and release the RANGE DOWN (-) button until the segmented bars donot appear in the display.22Adjust signal field rangea. Determine the desired location and thesignal field range required (2 feet mini-mum diameter up to a 12 feet maximumdiameter).b. With the unit on, press the RANGE UP(+) or the RANGE DOWN (-) buttons toincrease or decrease the signal fieldrange.c. Each segment of displayed bar repre-sents approximately 2 feet diameter ofrange.d. Once the range is set, place theShields™transmitter in the desired area.33Verify the signal field rangea. Make sure the Shields™transmitter ison.b. Holding the Titanium Computer Collar®unit, start outside the range and walkslowly towards the Shields™transmitter.c. The Titanium Computer Collar®unit willbeep as it approaches the outer rangeof the signal field width set in step 2.The beeping will be followed by a cor-rection.d. Rev 0.2 Draft5Training Your PetFor pets trained to the Invisible Fence®Brand outdoor pet containment system:• Use Invisible Fence®Brand training flagsattached to vegetable cans to mark theoutside of the signal field range.• This gives your pet a visual marker, simi-lar to how they learned the InvisibleBoundary® wall of the outdoor pet con-tainment system.• Allow your pet to enter the shielded areaon it’s own. By already being familiarwith the training flags, and the warningtone, your pet should react immediately,and back-up/move away from the shield-ed area. It may take several times foryour pet to recognize and avoid theshielded area.• Be sure to praise your pet for leaving theshielded area.• You may need to adjust the signal fieldrange so your pet receives the warningsooner.For pets new to the Invisible Fence®Brand products:• Use Invisible Fence®Brand training flagsattached to unopened vegetable cans tomark the edge of the signal field range.This gives your pet a visual marker.• Use Invisible Fence®Brand post coverson the Titanium Computer Collar®unit forthe first training session. This will intro-duce your pet to the idea of leaving theshielded area when he hears the warningtone.• Put a long lead on your pet and showyour pet how to avoid the shielded areaby gently guiding the pet out of the rangewhen the warning tone sounds.• Be sure to praise your pet for leaving theshielded area.• Repeat this process until your pet reactsto the warning beep on it’s own.• Remove the post covers on the TitaniumComputer Collar®unit. Allow your pet toenter the shielded area on it’s own. Yourpet should react immediately to the warn-ing beep and correction, and back-up/move away from the shielded area. Itmay take several times for your pet torecognize and avoid the shielded area.NOTEIf you find your pet is confused or unsurehow to avoid the correction, it may beuseful to put a long lead on your pet andshow him how to avoid the shielded areaby gently guiding him out of range.
Rev 0.2 Draft6Multi-Area ShieldingYour Shields™transmitter and the TitaniumComputer Collar®unit are preset to operateon Channel 1 (CH.1). For homes with two ormore pets, this setting is usually sufficient, aslong as all pets are required to avoid thesame shielded areas, like keeping all petsout of the kitchen, away from the trash, offthe sofa, etc.In some multi-pet homes, it may be desiredto allow one pet access to an area whiledenying access to another.When set to Channel 1 (CH.1), Shields™denies access to pets wearing a TitaniumComputer Collar®unit programmed toChannel 1.When set to Channel 2 (CH.2), Shields™denies access to pets wearing a TitaniumComputer Collar®unit programmed toChannel 2.When set to Channel 1 (CH.1) and Channel2 (CH.2), Shields™denies access to all petswearing a Titanium Computer Collar®unit.Changing from single to multi-areashielding:This section describes the procedures forchanging the transmitter and TitaniumComputer Collar®unit shielding settings.Three examples are provided:• Channel 1 to Channel 2• Channel 2 to Channel 1• Channel 1 or Channel 2 toChannels 1 and 2IMPORTANT: These steps will reprogramany Titanium Computer Collar®unit that iswithin ten feet of the Shields™transmitter.You may use this procedure to program mul-tiple Titanium Computer Collars®units atonce. Make sure any Titanium ComputerCollar®unit you do not wish to program isover ten feet from the Shields™transmitter orhas the Power Cap®battery removed. DONOT perform this procedure while theTitanium Computer Collar®unit is on the pet.The Shields™transmitter and the TitaniumComputer Collar®unit are both pre-pro-grammed to Channel 1 (CH.1). The statusbar should indicate this. To re-program thetransmitter and the Titanium ComputerCollar®unit, place the Shields™transmitterabout six inches away from the TitaniumComputer Collar®unit and follow the instruc-tions below. Read the instructions thoroughlybefore changing the Channel setting.To change from Channel 1 (CH.1) to theChannel 2 (CH.2) setting:1. Make sure the unit is off2. Press and hold the CHANNEL buttonuntil the status bar appears next toChannel 1.3. Press and release the Channelbutton two times. The statusbar will now appear next toChannel 2 (shown at right).4. To program the TitaniumComputer Collar®unit and the Shields™transmitter to Channel 2, hold theChannel button down until the light on theTitanium Computer Collar®unit flashesgreen.5. Release the Channel Button.6. Shields™is now set to only activateTitanium Computer Collar®units set toChannel 2.7.
