9Getting StartedPrecautions (Battery Pack)NOTEThe battery pack may become warm during rechargingor normal use. This is completely normal.Recharging will not commence outside of the allow-able temperature range (0 °C to 55 °C {32 °F to 131°F}). ( “Battery Power”) Once the allowablerange requirement is satisfied, charging begins auto-matically. Note that the recharging time varies basedon the usage conditions. (Recharging takes longer thanusual when the temperature is 10 °C {50 °F} or less.)If the temperature is low, the operating time is short-ened. Only use the computer within the allowable tem-perature range.The battery pack is a consumable item. If the amountof time the computer can be run off a particular batterypack becomes dramatically shorter and repeated re-charging does not restore its performance, the batterypack should be replaced with a new one.When transporting a spare battery inside a package,briefcase, etc., it is recommended that it be placed in aplastic bag so that its contacts are protected.Always power off the computer when it is not in use.Leaving the computer on when the AC adaptor is notconnected will exhaust the remaining battery capacity.Care should be exercised with regard to the following inorder to avoid the possibility of overheating, fire or dam-age.Avoid HeatDo not throw the battery pack into a fire orexpose it to excessive heat.Keep Articles AwayDo not place the battery pack together with ar-ticles such as necklaces or hairpins when carry-ing or storing.Do Not DisassembleDo not insert sharp objects into the battery pack,expose it to bumps or shocks, deform, disas-semble, or modify it.Do Not ShortDo not short the positive (+) and negative (-)contacts.Avoid Extreme Heat, Cold and Direct Sun-lightDo not charge, use or leave the battery pack forextended periods where it will be exposed to di-rect sunlight, in a hot place (in a car on a sunnyday, for example), or in a cold place.Do Not Use With Any Other ComputerThe battery pack is rechargeable and was in-tended for the specified computer. Do not use itwith a computer other than the one for which itwas designed.Do Not Put into a MicrowaveDo not put the battery pack into a microwaveoven or a pressurized chamber.Stop UsingShould the battery emit an abnormal odor, be-come hot to the touch, become discolored,change shape, or become in any way differentfrom normal, remove it from the computer andstop using it.If the battery pack will not be used for a long period of time(a month or more), charge or discharge (use) the batterypack until the remaining battery level becomes 30% to 40%and store it in a cool, dry place.This computer prevents overcharging of the battery by re-charging only when the remaining power is less than approx.95% of capacity.The battery pack is not charged when the computer is firstpurchased. Be sure to charge it before using it for the firsttime. When the AC adaptor is connected to the computer,charging begins automatically.Should the battery leak and the fluid get into your eyes, donot rub your eyes. Immediately flush your eyes with clearwater and see a doctor for medical treatment as soon as pos-sible.Do not touch the terminals on the battery pack. The batterypack may no longer function properly if the contacts aredirty or damaged.Do not expose the battery pack to water, or allow it to be-come wet.

38AppendixHard Disk Backup FunctionThe hard disk backup function creates a backup area (storage area) on the hard disk. This area is to back up (store) hard diskcontents or restore backed up contents to their original locations.By backing up the data on your hard disk to a backup area, you can protect your data from loss or damage resulting from operationalerrors or other factors. Also, you can back up or restore hard disk contents using this computer alone, without having to use othermedia or peripheral devices.At the time of purchase, the hard disk backup function is disabled. If you follow the procedure below to create a backup area, thehard disk backup function will be enabled, and you will be able to back up your data. Note, that once the backup function has beenenabled, you will have to perform the reinstallation procedure to disable it again ( page 34).Disconnect or remove all peripheral devices, SD memory cards, and MultiMedia Cards. Takecare to disconnect the USB floppy disk drive, as the backup area may not be created properlywhile these devices are connected.Be sure the AC adaptor is connected to the computer.A backup area cannot be created if the hard disk is already divided into several partitions. Returnthe computer to its condition at the time of purchase (one partition only), and create the backuparea.To divide the partition, make the selection when the backup area is created ( page 40 step 7).If the partition configuration is changed (partitions created, size changed, etc.) after the backuparea has been created, it will no longer be possible to execute the backup function.
