S001_EnSelecting fine audio equipment such as the unit you’ve just purchased is only the start of your musical enjoyment. Now it’s time to consider how you can maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group want you to get the most out of your equipment by playing it at a safe level. One that lets the sound come through loud and clear without annoying blaring or distortion-and, most importantly, without affecting your sensitive hearing.Sound can be deceiving. Over time your hearing “comfort level” adapts to higher volumes of sound. So what sounds “normal” can actually be loud and harmful to your hearing. Guard against this by setting your equipment at a safe level BEFORE your hearing adapts. To establish a safe level: • Start your volume control at a low setting.• Slowly increase the sound until you can hear it comfortably and clearly, and without distortion.Once you have established a comfortable sound level:• Set the dial and leave it there.Taking a minute to do this now will help to prevent hearing damage or loss in the future. After all, we want you listening for a lifetime. We Want You Listening For A Lifetime Used wisely, your new sound equipment will provide a lifetime of fun and enjoyment. Since hearing damage from loud noise is often undetectable until it is too late, this manufacturer and the Electronic Industries Association’s Consumer Electronics Group recommend you avoid prolonged exposure to excessive noise. This list of sound levels is included for your protection.DecibelLevel Example 30 Quiet library, soft whispers 40 Living room, refrigerator, bedroom away from traffic 50 Light traffic, normal conversation, quiet office 60 Air conditioner at 20 feet, sewing machine 70 Vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, noisy restaurant 80 Average city traffic, garbage disposals, alarm clock at two feet.THE FOLLOWING NOISES CAN BE DANGEROUS UNDER CONSTANT EXPOSURE 90 Subway, motorcycle, truck traffic, lawn mower 100 Garbage truck, chain saw, pneumatic drill 120 Rock band concert in front of speakers, thunderclap 140 Gunshot blast, jet plane 180 Rocket launching padInformation courtesy of the Deafness Research Foundation. 10EnBefore you start01 Frequently asked questions•What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD-RW?The most important difference between DVD-R andDVD-RW is that DVD-R is a record-once medium, while DVD-RW is a re-recordable/erasable medium. You can re-record/erase a DVD-RW discapproximately 1,000 times. For more information, see About DVD recording onpage 52.•What's VR mode?VR (Video Recording) mode is a special modedesigned for home DVD recording. It allows flexibleediting of recorded material compared to `Videomode'. On the other hand, Video mode discs aremore compatible with other DVD players.•Can I play my recordable discs in a regular DVDplayer?Generally, DVD-R discs and DVD-RW discsrecorded in Video mode* are playable in a regularDVD player, but they must be `finalized' first. Thisprocess fixes the contents of the disc to make themreadable to other DVD players as DVD-Video discs.DVD-RW discs recorded in VR mode are playable insome players. This label indicates playback compatibilitywith DVD-RW discs recorded in VR mode (VideoRecording format). However, for discs recordedwith a record-only-once encrypted program, playback can only be achieved using the CPRMcompatible device.Note that Pioneer cannot guarantee that discsrecorded using this recorder will play on otherplayers.* `DVD-Video format' recording: The use of the DVD-Video format for recording on DVD-R and DVD-RWdiscs is referred to as recording in `Video mode' onPioneer's DVD recorders. Supporting playback of DVD-R / DVD-RW discs is optional for manufacturers ofDVD playback equipment, and there is DVD playbackequipment that does not play DVD-R or DVD-RWdiscs recorded in the DVD-Video format.Note: `Finalization' is required. This recorder supports the recording of `copy-once'broadcast programs using the CPRM copy protectionsystem (see CPRM on page 53) on CPRM-compliantDVD-RW discs in VR mode. CPRM recordings canonly be played on players that are specificallycompatible with CPRM.•Do I need two DVD recorders for editing? What kind ofediting can I do?Unlike editing video tape, you only need one DVDrecorder to edit discs. With DVD, you edit bymaking a `Play List' of what to play and when toplay it. On playback, the recorder plays the discaccording to the Play List.Throughout this manual, you will often see thewords Original and Play List to refer to the actualcontent and the edited version.•Original content refers to what's actually recordedon the disc.•Play List content refers to the edited version of thedisc-how the Original content is to be played.Operating DVD-Video•Some operations od DVD-Video may be prohibitedby the manufacturer, or some operation methods orfunctions of the DVD-Video may be different fromthe discription in this manual.•If you attempt an operation that is prohibited byeither the disc or the unit, a ”” mark will appearon the TV monitor.
