Set up your device132. Set up your device■The antenna Your device has a fixed antenna located towards the top of the phone with the fold closed. Hold the phone with the antenna area pointed up and over your shoulder.As with any other radio transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the device is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed. Avoiding contact with the antenna area when operating the phone optimizes the antenna performance and the battery life.■UIM card slotYour phone has a UIM (SIM) card slot built into the mechanics. However, the UIM is not functional in this phone model. Avoid placing anything into the UIM card slot.■Insert the batteryNote: Always switch off the power and disconnect the charger and any other device before removing the cover. Avoid touching electronic components while changing the cover. Always store and use the device with the cover attached.Always use original Nokia batteries. See Battery information, 43.

Set up your device14Slide the back cover off to remove it (1). Insert the battery so that the gold-colored connectors on the battery align with the connectors on the device (2). Replace the back cover: align the catches (3) together, and slide the cover (4) forward.Charge the battery1. Plug the charger transformer into a standard ac outlet.2. Open the rubber cover located at the top of the phone. Connect the charger plug into the connector in the device.The battery indicator bar starts scrolling. When the battery is fully charged, the bar stops scrolling.

Disconnect the charger from the device and the ac outlet.■Switch on or offWarning: Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited, or when it may cause interference or danger.The on-off function for this device is combined with the end key. To switch the device on or off, press and hold the end key. When you switch off the device, the profiles list is displayed before the device switches off.When you switch the device on, it may request a lock code. Enter the code and select OK. The preset lock code is 1234. For information about device codes, see Security settings, 33.■Make a callUse the keypad• Open the device, and enter the phone number, including the area code. To delete a character to the left of the cursor, select Clear.• Press the call key. Press the volume keys to adjust the volume during the call.• Press the end key, or close the fold to end the call or to cancel the call attempt.Use the contacts listTo enter a number into the contacts list, in the standby mode, select Menu > Contacts, and enter the name and phone number. See Contact list options, 27.In the standby mode, scroll down to find the name or number you want. Press the call key to call the number.Redialing a numberTo redial one of the last 20 phone numbers that you have called, press the call key, scroll to the desired name or number, and press the call key again.1-touch dialing1-touch dialing must be switched on before you can use it. To switch it on, select Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialing > On.

Set up your device16You can set keys 2–9 as 1-touch dialing keys. After you assign a number to a key, press and hold the key in standby mode to make a call, or press the number and the call key.Assign a number to a key1. Select Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialing > Edit.2. Scroll to the desired key, and select Assign. If a phone number is already assigned, select Options to view, change, or delete the assignment. 3. Select Assign to SMS for text messaging or Assign to call for voice calls.■Answer callsAnswer a callOpen the fold and press the call key . If you do not press the call key, the call goes to your voice mailbox. To reject a call without answering it, open the fold and quickly close it, or press the end key. Adjust the volume during a callTo increase or decrease the volume during a call, press the top or bottom of the volume key. When adjusting the volume, a bar chart indicates the volume level.LoudspeakerWarning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use because the volume may be extremely loud.• To activate the loudspeaker during a call, select Loudspeaker and close the fold.• To deactivate the loudspeaker during a call, open the fold and select Handset.The loudspeaker is deactivated when a call (or call attempt) ends or when certain enhancements are connected.Options during a callSelect Options during a call to access in-call functions. Many of these are network services. Check with your wireless service provider for more information.

Text entry183. Text entryYou can enter text and numbers two ways: traditional text input indicated with , or predictive text input indicated with ..■Traditional text input• Press a key once to insert the first letter on the key, twice for the second letter, etc. If you pause briefly, the last letter in the display is accepted and your device awaits the next entry.• To add a letter that is on the same key as the previous letter, scroll up or down (or wait for the cursor to appear), and enter the next letter.Tips for writing text• Press 0 to enter a space and 1 to enter a period (.).• To move the cursor left or right, scroll left or right.• To delete the character to the left of the cursor, select Clear. To clear the screen, select and hold Clear.• To switch between letters and numbers, press and hold #. • To enter a number, press and hold the desired key.• To enter a special character, press and hold *, scroll to the character you want, and select Insert. In traditional text entry, you can also enter some punctuation marks and other special characters by pressing 1 repeatedly.• To switch between upper and lower case or between traditional and predictive text, press # repeatedly, and check the indicator at the top of the display.■Predictive text inputPredictive text input allows you to write messages quickly using your keypad and the built-in dictionary. It is much faster than traditional text entry.

Text entry19Activate or deactivateTo activate predictive text, at any text entry screen, select Options > Predictive text and the desired language.To revert to traditional text entry, select Options > Predictive text > Prediction off.Text entry• For each letter of the word that you want to spell, press the corresponding key on your keypad only once, even if the letter you want is not the first letter on the key. The device guesses the word you are trying to spell. • If a displayed word is not correct, press * to see other matches.•Press 0 to enter a space and begin writing the next word.•If ? appears after a word, select Spell, enter the word using traditional text entry, and select OK.•Press 1 to insert a period into your message.•Press and hold * to display special characters. Press * again to cycle through all available characters.•Press # to switch predictive text on or off and to use predictive text in various modes.

Messages204. Messages If you have subscribed to a messaging service through your wireless provider, you can send and receive messages to compatible devices that also subscribe to a compatible message service. ■Write messages1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Create message, and enter the message. The number of available characters are shown on the top right of the display.2. Select Options to access other functions.3. Select Options > Send, to enter the recipient’s phone number, and Find to find it in contacts. Select OK.You can also select Options >Sending options > Send to many, Send to list, Send to e-mail, or Add callback no.Note: When sending messages, your device may display Message sent. This is an indication that the message has been sent by your device to the message centre number programmed into your device. This is not an indication that the message has been received at the intended destination. For more details about messaging services, check with your service provider.Read messages (Inbox)When you receive text messages in the standby mode, the number of new messages and the new message icon ( ) are shown on the display.1. Select Show to display the messages. To display the messages later, press Exit. When you want to read the message, select Menu > Messages > Inbox and the message you want to read.2. Scroll up and down to browse through the message. While reading the message, select Options for other functions.

Messages21Receive MIDI ring tonesCopyright protections may prevent some images, music (including ring tones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded.When the device receives a ring tone message, it displays a ring tone alert message. Select Show to view the ring tone message, or view the Inbox if multiple ring tones are available. Select Exit to return to the standby mode and discard the ring tone. To retrieve a waiting ring tone, select Retrieve. The message is stored in the Inbox.Select Options when viewing the waiting ring tone message for the following functions:Play—Plays the ring tone for your review.Save—Saves the ring tone to the Downloaded tones folder. Save & activate—Saves the ring tone to the Downloaded tones folder and uses it as the device ring tone.Delete—Removes the waiting ring tone message without downloading it.Open tones—Opens the Downloaded tones folder for you to view. This option only appears when at least one ring tone is saved.Details—Displays information about the waiting ring tone, such as the sender’s name or number.Send items and draftsThe Sent items folder stores copies of the messages that you have sent. The Drafts folder stores messages that you saved while you were writing them. To save a message while writing, select Options > Save message.While viewing a message, select Options for other functions.Distribution listsIf you need to send messages frequently to a fixed group of recipients, you can define a distribution list and use it to send a message. You can define up to 6 distribution lists, each with up to 10 recipients. The device sends a text message to each recipient separately.Define a distribution list1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Distribution lists. Highlight an empty list and select Options > Add list.

Messages222. Enter a name for the list, and select OK.3. To add contacts to this list, select Options > View list > Options > Add contact and the contact or contacts to be added to the list.4. When you have added your contacts, select Back.Send a message to a distribution list1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Create message.2. Select Options > Sending options > Send to list, the desired distribution list, then OK.If a message is not sent to one or more recipients, a report is displayed listing the number of failures, successful sendings, and names not found. Scroll to and select each category.• Names in the not found group are names in the distribution list that have been deleted from the phone book. Select Remove to remove them from the distribution list.• Select Resend to resend the message to the failed recipients.• Select View to view the list of failed recipients.Screened messagesTo view screened messages, in the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Screened messages and the desired message. While viewing the message:• To delete this message, select Options > Delete. • To delete the number from the screened numbers list, select Options > Delete from list. For information on number screening, see Contact list options, 27.• To view the details of a screened message, select Options > Details.Delete messagesIn the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Delete messages > All read, Inbox, Drafts, Sent items, or Screened msgs. Select OK at the prompt.Message counter1. Select Menu > Messages > Message counter.2. Scroll down to view the numbers of sent and received messages.

To reset message counters, select Clear counters and the counter that you want to reset.The Message counter submenu is also located under the Call log main menu.Message settingsSelect Menu > Messages > Message settings and one of the following:Templates—View, edit, or delete preset message templates.Smileys—Use preset smileys, such as :-) in messages. You can also edit and delete the existing smileys and create new smileys.Callback number—Include a callback number to your messages.Signatures—Add a signature file to your messages. Select signature text to create or edit your signature. Select Include sig. > On or Off to set automatic signature insertion on or off.Delivery reports—Request the network to send delivery reports for your sent messages (network service). Select On or Off.No. screening—View the screened numbers list, or add a number to the list. See Contact list options, 27.Voice messagesVoice mailbox is a network feature. When you receive a voice message, your device displays a notification and may beep or vibrate. If you receive more than one message, your device shows the number of messages received.Save voice mailbox number1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Voice mailbox > Voice mailbox number.2. If the box is empty, enter the voice mailbox area code and number, and select OK. Listen to your voice messagesDial your voice mailbox number using one of these methods: dial the number using the keypad, press and hold 1, or select Listen if there is a notification message in the display.In the standby mode, select Menu > Messages > Voice mailbox > Listen to voice messages.

Messages24When you connect and the prerecorded greeting begins, follow the automated instructions to listen to your voice messages.Clear voice mail iconYou can clear the voice mail notification from the display. Select Menu > Messages > Voice mailbox > Clear voice mail icon to clear the voice mail icon from the start screen and set the number of voice mail messages to 0.

Call log255. Call logCall log records the phone numbers of missed, received, and dialed calls, the approximate length of your calls, and the number of sent and received messages. For call log to work properly, the following conditions must be met:• You must be in a digital network, your service provider must support caller ID, and it must be enabled in the device.• Your calls cannot be blocked.• Your device must be on and within the service area or in a compatible network if roaming.■Check missed, received, or dialed calls1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Call log > Missed calls, Received calls, or Dialed numbers.2. Scroll through the list of numbers and highlight your selection. 3. Select Options and one of the following:View number—View the number. (The caller’s name and number must be stored in the contact list.)Call—Dial the number from the call log.Card call—Dial the sequence for your calling card with the phone number. Select a card from the list. To enter information for a card, see "Call settings," p. 31.Send message—Send a text message to the person who called you or whom you called.Send number—Send the phone number as a message to a compatible device.Time of call—Show the time when the call was connected.Edit—Edit the number and save it with a name to your phone book.Save—Enter a name for the number and save both to your phone book.Delete—Erase the number from the call list.Add to scm. list—Add number to list of screened numbers.

Call log26■Delete recent call listYou cannot undo this operation.Select Menu > Call log > Delete recent call lists > All, Missed, Received, or Dialed.■Call timersYour device tracks the approximate amount of time you spend on each call.Note: The actual invoice for calls and services from your service provider may vary, depending upon network features, rounding off for billing, taxes, and so forth.Select Menu > Call log > Call timers and one of the following:Duration of last call—Show the approximate duration of the last call.Duration of received calls—Show the approximate duration of all received calls.Duration of dialed calls—Show the approximate duration of all calls dialed.Duration of all calls—Show the approximate duration of all calls that have been made and received since you reset the timers.Clear timers—Clear all call timers for the currently selected phone number. (Your device includes separate timers for each number used.) You need to enter your security code to clear timers. This action cannot be undone.Note: Some timers may be reset during service or software upgrades.■Message counterThe Message counter menu is also located under Messages. See Messages, 20.

Contacts276. Contacts You can save names and device numbers in device memory. The device memory can store up to 200 names.■Contacts optionsTo access contacts options, in the standby mode, select Menu > Contacts.■Search for a name and phone number1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Contacts > Find. 2. Enter the first one or more characters of the name, and scroll to find the name.3. To call the contact, press the call key.4. Select Details >Options and the action you want to apply to the contact.If the name or phone number is saved in device internal memory, is displayed.■Contact list optionsThe following options are available in the Contacts menu:Find—Search for a name in the contacts list.Add name—Saves names and phone numbers in the phone book.Delete—Delete names and phone numbers from the phone book one by one, or all at once.Settings—Modify the contacts settings.1-touch dialing—Activate the 1-touch dialing feature, and edit the numbers assigned to the 1-touch dialing keys.No. screening—View the screened numbers list, or add a number to the list. To add a number, select Menu > Contacts > No. screening > Options > Add number, enter the number, and select OK. To delete a number from this list, select the number and Options >Delete from list.

Contacts28■Contacts settingsIn the standby mode, select Contacts > Settings and one of the following:Contacts view—Specify how names and numbers are shown in contacts list.Memory status—Check how many names and phone numbers are already saved and how many can still be saved in each phone book.

Settings32Int. dial. prefix—Stores an international dialing prefix (this feature is carrier dependent). Enter the international dialing prefix, and select OK. To use the prefix, in the standby mode, press * twice to use +, and enter the phone number.In-call timer—Switch the display of call time On or Off while calling.Calling cardsIf you use a calling card for long distance calls, save the calling card number in your phone. The phone can store up to four calling cards. Contact your calling card company for more information.Save information1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Settings > Call settings > Calling card.2. Enter your lock code, and select OK. See "Security settings," p. 33.3. Scroll to one of the four card memory locations, and select Options > Edit > Dialing sequence.4. Select one of the following sequence types:Access no. + phone no. + card no.—Dial the 1-800 access number, phone number, then enter the card number (plus PIN if required).Access no. + card no. + phone no.—Dial the 1-800 access number, card number (plus PIN if required), then enter the phone number.Prefix + phone no. + card no.—Dial the prefix (numbers that must precede the phone number) and phone number, then enter the card number (plus PIN if required).5. Enter the required information (access number or prefix and card number), and select OK to confirm your entries.6. Select Card name > enter the card name > OK.Make callsAfter you have saved your calling card information in your phone, make a call with your calling card.1. In the standby mode, select Menu > Settings > Call settings > Calling card. 2. Enter your security code, and select OK. See "Security settings," p. 33.3. Scroll to the calling card of your choice, select Options > Select > OK.

Settings34Phone lock—Protects your device from unauthorized calls or unauthorized access to information. To select Phone lock, enter the lock code, and press OK. Select Off to immediately switch the phone lock off, Lock now to immediately lock the device, or On power-up to lock the device the next time you turn it on. When the phone is locked, calls still may be possible to the official emergency number programmed into your phone.Allowed number when phone is locked—Lets you dial specific numbers when the device is locked. To access this feature, enter the lock code, and press OK. Select Allowed number when phone is locked > Assign, enter the desired number, and press OK. Change lock code—Lets you change the lock code. To select Change lock code, enter the lock code, and press OK. Enter your new lock code (4 characters), and press OK. Enter the new lock code again for verification, and press OK. Voice privacy—Lets you protect the privacy of your current phone conversation from other callers placing phone calls on your network. Select On or Off .■Network settingsYou can set your device to roam or search for another network when you are not in your home area. Your device is set to search for the most cost-effective network. These options are carrier dependent and may differ from those described.In the standby mode, select Menu > Settings > Network settings > Network. Select Home only to make and receive calls in your home area only, or Automatic to search for service in another digital network. The roaming rate applies when not in the home service area. The full performance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and standby times are noticeably shorter than normal, replace the battery.
