After about a minute, put the batteryback in, and switch the phone on.• Update your phone software• Reset your phone. This restores the factorysettings, and erases all your personalcontent, including apps you've purchasedand downloaded. On the start screen, swipeleft, and tap Settings > about > reset yourphone.If your issue remains unsolved, contact Nokia forrepair options. Before sending your phone forrepair, always back up your data, as all personaldata in your phone may be deleted.Tip: If you need to identify your phone, toview the unique IMEI number of the phone,dial *#06#.8
Feature-specific informationImportant: This device is designed to beused with a mini-UICC SIM card, also knownas a micro-SIM card only. A micro-SIM cardis smaller than the standard SIM card. Useof incompatible SIM cards may damage thecard or the device, and may corrupt datastored on the card.Note: Switch the device off and disconnectthe charger and any other device beforeremoving any covers. Avoid touchingelectronic components while changing anycovers. Always store and use the device withany covers attached.Use only compatible memory cards approved byNokia for use with this device. Incompatible cardsmay damage the card and the device and corruptdata stored on the card.Important: Do not remove the memory cardwhen an app is using it. Doing so maydamage the memory card and the deviceand corrupt data stored on the card.If the battery is completely discharged, it maytake several minutes before the chargingindicator is displayed or before any calls can bemade.You can use USB charging when a wall outlet is notavailable. Data can be transferred while chargingthe device. The efficiency of USB charging powervaries significantly, and it may take a long time for9
charging to start and the device to startfunctioning.Use only Qi chargers for wireless charging.Warning: Make sure there’s nothingbetween the charger and the device. Do notattach anything, such as stickers, to thedevice surface near the charging area.Flight mode closes connections to the mobilenetwork and switches your phone's wirelessfeatures off. NFC is not switched off. Comply withthe instructions and safety requirements givenby, for example, an airline, and any applicable lawsand regulations. Where allowed, you can connectto a Wi-Fi network to, for example, browse theinternet or switch Bluetooth on in flight mode.Important: Avoid scratching the touchscreen.Do not connect products that create an outputsignal, as this may damage the device. Do notconnect any voltage source to the audioconnector. If you connect an external device orheadset, other than those approved by Nokia foruse with this device, to the audio connector, payspecial attention to volume levels.You can send text messages that are longer thanthe character limit for a single message. Longermessages are sent as two or more messages.Your service provider may charge accordingly.Characters with accents, other marks, or somelanguage options, take more space, and limit thenumber of characters that can be sent in a singlemessage.10
The compass has limited accuracy.Electromagnetic fields, metal objects, or otherexternal circumstances may also affect theaccuracy of the compass. The compass shouldalways be properly calibrated.The availability, accuracy and completeness ofthe location info depend on, for example, yourlocation, surroundings, and third party sources,and may be limited. Location info may not beavailable, for example, inside buildings orunderground. For privacy info related topositioning methods, see the Nokia PrivacyPolicy.Contents of digital maps may sometimes beinaccurate and incomplete. Never rely solely onthe content or the service for essentialcommunications, such as in emergencies.Using services or downloading content may causetransfer of large amounts of data, which mayresult in data traffic costs.Websites may ask to access your current locationinfo to, for example, personalise the info theyshow you. If you allow a website to use yourlocation info, your location may be visible toothers, depending on the website. Read theprivacy policy of the website.Location info can be attached to a photo or video,if your location can be determined using satelliteor network methods. If you share a photo or videothat contains location info, the location info maybe visible to those who view the photo or video.You can switch geotagging off in the phonesettings.11

Product and safety informationLearn how to use your product safely.Network services and costsYour device is approved for use on the WCDMA850 (5), 1900 (2), 1700/2100 (4), 2100 (1), and GSM850 (5), 900 (8), 1800 (3), 1900 (2) MHz networks.To use the device, you need a subscription with aservice provider.Using some features and downloading content toyour device requires a network connection andmay result in data traffic costs. Some productfeatures require support from the network, andyou may need to subscribe to them.Take care of your deviceHandle your device, battery, charger andaccessories with care. The following suggestionshelp you protect your warranty coverage.• Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity,and all types of liquids or moisture can containminerals that corrode electronic circuits. Ifyour device gets wet, remove the battery, andallow the device to dry.• Do not use or store the device in dusty or dirtyareas. Moving parts and electroniccomponents can be damaged.• Do not store the device in high temperatures.High temperatures can shorten the life of thedevice, damage the battery, and warp or meltplastics.• Do not store the device in cold temperatures.When the device warms to its normaltemperature, moisture can form inside thedevice and damage electronic circuits.18

About Digital Rights ManagementWhen using this device, obey all laws and respectlocal customs, privacy and legitimate rights ofothers, including copyrights. Copyrightprotection may prevent you from copying,modifying, or transferring photos, music, andother content.Content owners may use different types of digitalrights management (DRM) technologies toprotect their intellectual property, includingcopyrights. This device uses various types of DRMsoftware to access DRM-protected content. Withthis device you can access content protected withWMDRM 10. If certain DRM software fails toprotect the content, content owners may ask thatsuch DRM software's ability to access new DRM-protected content be revoked. Battery and charger infoYour device is intended for use with a BP-4Wrechargeable battery. Nokia may make additionalbattery models available for this device. Alwaysuse original Nokia batteries.This device is intended for use when supplied withpower from the following chargers: AC-50U. Theexact Nokia charger model number may varydepending on the plug type, identified by E, X, AR,U, A, C, K, B, or N.In addition, third-party chargers that comply withthe IEC/EN 62684 standard, and that can connectto your device micro USB connector, may becompatible.The battery can be charged and dischargedhundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out.When the talk and standby times are noticeablyshorter than normal, replace the battery.Only replace the battery with a battery that iscompliant with the IEEE-std-1725 standard.Only use the battery with a charging system thathas been qualified with the system per CTIACertification Requirements for Battery SystemCompliance to IEEE 1725.The phone shall only be connected to CTIAcertified adapters, products that bear the USB-IFlogo, or products that have completed the USB-IF compliance program.Battery safetyAlways switch the device off and unplug thecharger before removing the battery. unplug a charger or an accessory, hold and pullthe plug, not the cord.When your charger is not in use, unplug it fromthe electrical plug and the device. Do not leave afully charged battery connected to a charger, asovercharging may shorten the battery’s lifetime.If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose itscharge over time.Always keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C(59°F and 77°F). Message from the FDAThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)provides the following consumer informationabout wireless phones.See www.fda.gov/cellphones for updatedinformation.Do wireless phones pose a health hazard?The available scientific evidence does not showthat any health problems are associated withusing wireless phones. There is no proof,however, that wireless phones are absolutelysafe. Wireless phones emit low levels ofradiofrequency energy (RF) in the microwaverange while being used. They also emit very lowlevels of RF when in the stand-by mode. Whereashigh levels of RF can produce health effects (byheating tissue), exposure to low level RF that doesnot produce heating effects causes no knownadverse health effects. Many studies of low levelRF exposures have not found any biologicaleffects. Some studies have suggested that somebiological effects may occur, but such findingshave not been confirmed by additional research.In some cases, other researchers have haddifficulty in reproducing those studies, or indetermining the reasons for inconsistent results.What is the FDA's role concerning the safety ofwireless phones?Under the law, FDA does not review the safety ofradiation-emitting consumer products such aswireless phones before they can be sold, as itdoes with new drugs or medical devices. However,the agency has authority to take action if wirelessphones are shown to emit radiofrequency energy41
(RF) at a level that is hazardous to the user. In sucha case, FDA could require the manufacturers ofwireless phones to notify users of the healthhazard and to repair, replace or recall the phonesso that the hazard no longer exists.Although the existing scientific data do not justifyFDA regulatory actions, FDA has urged thewireless phone industry to take a number ofsteps, including the following:• Support needed research into possiblebiological effects of RF of the type emitted bywireless phones;• Design wireless phones in a way thatminimizes any RF exposure to the user that isnot necessary for device function; and• Cooperate in providing users of wirelessphones with the best possible information onpossible effects of wireless phone use onhuman health.FDA belongs to an interagency working group ofthe federal agencies that have responsibility fordifferent aspects of RF safety to ensurecoordinated efforts at the federal level. Thefollowing agencies belong to this working group:• National Institute for Occupational Safety andHealth• Environmental Protection Agency• Federal Communications Commission• Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration• National Telecommunications andInformation Administration42
The National Institutes of Health participates insome interagency working group activities, aswell.FDA shares regulatory responsibilities forwireless phones with the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC). All phonesthat are sold in the United States must complywith FCC safety guidelines that limit RF exposure.FCC relies on FDA and other health agencies forsafety questions about wireless phones.FCC also regulates the base stations that thewireless phone networks rely upon. While thesebase stations operate at higher power than do thewireless phones themselves, the RF exposuresthat people get from these base stations aretypically thousands of times lower than thosethey can get from wireless phones. Base stationsare thus not the primary subject of the safetyquestions discussed in this document.What is the FDA doing to find out more about thepossible health effects of wireless phone RF?FDA is working with the U.S. National ToxicologyProgram and with groups of investigators aroundthe world to ensure that high priority animalstudies are conducted to address importantquestions about the effects of exposure toradiofrequency energy (RF). FDA has been aleading participant in the World HealthOrganization International ElectromagneticFields (EMF) Project since its inception in 1996. Aninfluential result of this work has been thedevelopment of a detailed agenda of researchneeds that has driven the establishment of newresearch programs around the world. The Project43
has also helped develop a series of publicinformation documents on EMF issues. FDA andthe Cellular Telecommunications & InternetAssociation (CTIA) have a formal CooperativeResearch and Development Agreement (CRADA)to do research on wireless phone safety. FDAprovides the scientific oversight, obtaining inputfrom experts in government, industry, andacademic organizations. CTIA-funded research isconducted through contracts to independentinvestigators. The initial research will include bothlaboratory studies and studies of wireless phoneusers. The CRADA will also include a broadassessment of additional research needs in thecontext of the latest research developmentsaround the world.What steps can I take to reduce my exposure toradiofrequency energy from my wireless phone?If there is a risk from these products--and at thispoint we do not know that there is--it is probablyvery small. But if you are concerned aboutavoiding even potential risks, you can take a fewsimple steps to minimize your exposure toradiofrequency energy (RF). Since time is a keyfactor in how much exposure a person receives,reducing the amount of time spent using awireless phone will reduce RF exposure.If you must conduct extended conversations bywireless phone every day, you could place moredistance between your body and the source of theRF, since the exposure level drops offdramatically with distance. For example, youcould use a headset and carry the wireless phoneaway from your body or use a wireless phoneconnected to a remote antenna.44
Again, the scientific data do not demonstrate thatwireless phones are harmful. But if you areconcerned about the RF exposure from theseproducts, you can use measures like thosedescribed above to reduce your RF exposure fromwireless phone use.What about children using wireless phones?The scientific evidence does not show a danger tousers of wireless phones, including children andteenagers. If you want to take steps to lowerexposure to radiofrequency energy (RF), themeasures described above would apply tochildren and teenagers using wireless phones.Reducing the time of wireless phone use andincreasing the distance between the user and theRF source will reduce RF exposure. Some groupssponsored by other national governments haveadvised that children be discouraged from usingwireless phones at all. For example, thegovernment in the United Kingdom distributedleaflets containing such a recommendation inDecember 2000. They noted that no evidenceexists that using a wireless phone causes braintumors or other ill effects. Their recommendationto limit wireless phone use by children was strictlyprecautionary; it was not based on scientificevidence that any health hazard exists.Do hands-free kits for wireless phones reducerisks from exposure to RF emissions?Since there are no known risks from exposure toRF emissions from wireless phones, there is noreason to believe that hands-free kits reducerisks. Hands-free kits can be used with wirelessphones for convenience and comfort. Thesesystems reduce the absorption of RF energy in45
the head because the phone, which is the sourceof the RF emissions, will not be placed against thehead. On the other hand, if the phone is mountedagainst the waist or other part of the body duringuse, then that part of the body will absorb moreRF energy. Wireless phones marketed in the U.S.are required to meet safety requirementsregardless of whether they are used against thehead or against the body. Either configurationshould result in compliance with the safety limit.Do wireless phone accessories that claim toshield the head from RF radiation work?Since there are no known risks from exposure toRF emissions from wireless phones, there is noreason to believe that accessories that claim toshield the head from those emissions reducerisks. Some products that claim to shield the userfrom RF absorption use special phone cases, whileothers involve nothing more than a metallicaccessory attached to the phone. Studies haveshown that these products generally do not workas advertised. Unlike "hand-free" kits, these so-called "shields" may interfere with properoperation of the phone. The phone may be forcedto boost its power to compensate, leading to anincrease in RF absorption. In February 2002, theFederal trade Commission (FTC) charged twocompanies that sold devices that claimed toprotect wireless phone users from radiation withmaking false and unsubstantiated claims.According to FTC, these defendants lacked areasonable basis to substantiate their claim.How does the FCC Audit Cell Phone RF?After FCC grants permission for a particularcellular telephone to be marketed, FCC will46
occasionally conduct “post-grant” testing todetermine whether production versions of thephone are being produced to conform with FCCregulatory requirements. The manufacturer of acell phone that does not meet FCC’s regulatoryrequirements may be required to remove the cellphone from use and to refund the purchase priceor provide a replacement phone, and may besubject to civil or criminal penalties. In addition, ifthe cell phone presents a risk of injury to the user,FDA may also take regulatory action. The mostimportant post-grant test, from a consumer’sperspective, is testing of the RF emissions of thephone. FCC measures the Specific AbsorptionRate (SAR) of the phone, following a very rigoroustesting protocol. As is true for nearly any scientificmeasurement, there is a possibility that the testmeasurement may be less than or greater thanthe actual RF emitted by the phone. Thisdifference between the RF test measurement andactual RF emission is because test measurementsare limited by instrument accuracy, because testmeasurement and actual use environments aredifferent, and other variable factors. Thisinherent variability is known as “measurementuncertainty.” When FCC conducts post-granttesting of a cell phone, FCC takes into account anymeasurement uncertainty to determine whetherregulatory action is appropriate. This approachensures that when FCC takes regulatory action, itwill have a sound, defensible scientific basis.FDA scientific staff reviewed the methodologyused by FCC to measure cell phone RF, and agreedit is an acceptable approach, given our currentunderstanding of the risks presented by cellular47
phone RF emissions. RF emissions from cellularphones have not been shown to present a risk ofinjury to the user when the measured SAR is lessthan the safety limits set by FCC (an SAR of 1.6 w/kg). Even in a case where the maximummeasurement uncertainty permitted by currentmeasurement standards was added to themaximum permissible SAR, the resulting SARvalue would be well below any level known toproduce an acute effect. Consequently, FCC’sapproach with measurement uncertainty will notresult in consumers being exposed to any knownrisk from the RF emitted by cellular telephones.FDA will continue to monitor studies andliterature reports concerning acute effects of cellphone RF, and concerning chronic effects of long-term exposure to cellular telephone RF (that is,the risks from using a cell phone for many years).If new information leads FDA to believe that achange to FCC’s measurement policy may beappropriate, FDA will contact FCC and bothagencies will work together to develop a mutually-acceptable approach.Updated July 29, 200348
