TravellingPositioning (GPS)You can use applications such as GPS data to determine yourlocation, or measure distances and coordinates. Theseapplications require a GPS connection.About GPSThe coordinates in the GPS are expressed in the degrees anddecimal degrees format using the international WGS-84coordinate system. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by thegovernment of the United States, which is solely responsiblefor its accuracy and maintenance. The accuracy of locationdata can be affected by adjustments to GPS satellites madeby the United States government and is subject to changewith the United States Department of Defense civil GPS policyand the Federal Radionavigation Plan. Accuracy can also beaffected by poor satellite geometry. Availability and qualityof GPS signals may be affected by your location, buildings, natural obstacles, and weather conditions. The GPS receivershould only be used outdoors to allow reception of GPSsignals.Any GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely on locationdata from the GPS receiver and cellular radio networks forpositioning or navigation.Different positioning methods can be enabled or disabled inpositioning settings.Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Your device also supports assisted GPS (A-GPS).A-GPS is a network service.Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistance data overa packet data connection, which assists in calculating thecoordinates of your current location when your device isreceiving signals from satellites. When you activate A-GPS, your device receives useful satelliteinformation from an assistance data server over the cellularTravelling45CyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
network. With the help of assisted data, your device canobtain the GPS position faster.Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPS service,if no service provider-specific A-GPS settings are available. The assistance data is retrieved from the Nokia A-GPS serviceserver only when needed. To disable the A-GPS service, select Menu > Applications >Location > GPS data and Options > Positioningsettings > Positioning methods > Assisted GPS >Disable. You must have an internet access point defined in the deviceto retrieve assistance data from the Nokia A-GPS service overa packet data connection. The access point for A-GPS can bedefined in positioning settings. A wireless LAN (WLAN) accesspoint cannot be used for this service. Only a packet datainternet access point can be used. Your device asks you toselect the internet access point when GPS is used for the firsttime.Hold your device correctlyThe GPS receiver is located on the back of the device. Whenusing the receiver, make sure that you do not cover theantenna with your hand.Establishing a GPS connection may take from acouple of seconds to several minutes. Establishinga GPS connection in a vehicle may take longer. The GPS receiver draws its power from the devicebattery. Using the GPS receiver may drain thebattery faster.Tips on creating a GPS connectionIf your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider thefollowing:●If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal.●If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.●Ensure that your hand does not cover the GPS antenna ofyour device.●If the weather conditions are bad, the signal strength maybe affected.●Some vehicles have tinted (athermic) windows, whichmay block the satellite signals.Check satellite signal statusTo check how many satellites your device has found, andwhether your device is receiving satellite signals, selectMenu > Applications > Location > GPS data andPosition > Options > Satellite status.Travelling46CyanCyanMagentaMagentaYellowYellowBlackBlack
If your device has found satellites,a bar for each satellite is shown inthe satellite info view. The longerthe bar, the stronger the satellitesignal. When your device hasreceived enough data from thesatellite signal to calculate thecoordinates of your location, thebar turns blue.Initially, your device must receive signals from at least foursatellites to be able to calculate the coordinates of yourlocation. When the initial calculation has been made, it maybe possible to continue calculating the coordinates of yourlocation with three satellites. However, the accuracy isgenerally better when more satellites are found.MapsMapsSelect Menu > Maps. With Maps, you can see your current location on the map, browse maps for different cities and countries, search foraddresses and different points of interest, plan routes fromone location to another, and save locations and send themto compatible devices.
