You may have settings fromyour service providers already installed in yourdevice, or you may receive or request the settingsfrom the network service providers as a specialmessage.You can change the general settings in your device,such as language, standby mode, display, andkeypad lock settings. See "Generalsettings", p. 141.Access codesIf you forget any of the access codes, contact yourservice provider.●Personal identification number (PIN) code — Thiscode protects your SIM card againstunauthorised use. The PIN code (4 to 8 digits) isusually supplied with the SIM card. After threeconsecutive incorrect PIN code entries, the codeis blocked, and you need the PUK code to unblockit.●UPIN code — This code may be supplied with theUSIM card. The USIM card is an enhanced versionof the SIM card and is supported by UMTS mobilephones.●PIN2 code — This code (4 to 8 digits) is suppliedwith some SIM cards, and is required to accesssome functions in your device.●Lock code (also known as security code) — Thiscode (5 digits) can be used to lock the device toavoid unauthorised use. The factory setting forthe lock code is 12345. To avoid unauthoriseduse of your device, change the lock code. Keepthe new code secret and in a safe place separatefrom your device. Try entering the code onlyonce, if you forget the code. If the code youentered is not correct, contact a Nokia Care pointor your service provider for further instructions.●Personal unblocking key (PUK) code and PUK2code — These codes (8 digits) are required tochange a blocked PIN code or PIN2 code,respectively. If the codes are not supplied withthe SIM card, contact the operator whose SIMcard is in your device.●UPUK code — This code (8 digits) is required tochange a blocked UPIN code. If the code is notsupplied with the USIM card, contact the operatorwhose USIM card is in your device.16Useful information
Prolong battery lifeMany features in your device increase the demandon battery power and reduce the battery life time.To save battery power, note the following:●Features that use Bluetooth technology, orallowing such features to run in the backgroundwhile using other features, increase the demandon battery power. To prolong the operating timeof your device, turn the Bluetooth technology offwhen you do not need it.●Features that use wireless LAN (WLAN), orallowing such features to run in the backgroundwhile using other features, increase the demandon battery power. WLAN on your Nokia deviceswitches off when you are not trying to connect,not connected to another access point, or notscanning for available networks. To furtherreduce battery consumption, you can specify thatyour device does not scan, or scans less often, foravailable networks in the background. WLANswitches off in between background scans. See"Wireless LAN", p. 33. When Scan fornetworks is set to Never, the WLAN availabilityicon is not shown in the standby mode. However,you can still manually scan for available WLANnetworks and connect to WLAN networks asusual.●If you have set Packet data connection toWhen available in connection settings, andthere is no packet data coverage (GPRS), thedevice periodically tries to establish a packetdata connection, which causes increaseddemand on battery power. To prolong theoperating time of your device, select Packetdata connection > When needed.●The Maps application downloads new mapinformation when you scroll to new areas on themap, which increases the demand on batterypower. You can prevent the device fromautomatically downloading new maps. See"Maps", p. 87.●If the signal strength of the cellular networkvaries much in your area, your device must scanfor the available network repeatedly. Thisincreases the demand on battery power.If the network mode is set to dual mode in thenetwork settings, the device searches for theUMTS network. If it is not available, the deviceuses the available GSM network. To only use theGSM network, press , and select Tools >Settings > Phone > Network > Networkmode > GSM.●The backlight of the display increases thedemand on battery power. To change the time-out after which the backlight is switched off,press , and select Tools > Settings >17Useful information
General > Personalization > Display >Light time-out. To adjust the light sensor thatobserves the lighting conditions and adjusts thebrightness of the display, in the display settings,select Light sensor.●Leaving applications running in the backgroundincreases the demand on battery power. To closethe applications you do not use, press and hold, scroll to an application in the list, and pressC.Pressing C does not close Music player. To closeMusic player, select it from the list and Options >Exit.Free memoryMany features of the device use memory to storedata. Use shortcuts to repeat a transferAfter a data transfer, you can save a shortcut withthe transfer settings to the main view to repeat thesame transfer later.To edit the shortcut, scroll to it, and selectOptions > Shortcut settings. You can, forexample, create or change the name of the shortcut.A transfer log is shown after every transfer. To viewthe log of a previous transfer, scroll to a shortcut inthe main view, and select Options > View log.Handle transfer conflictsIf an item to be transferred has been edited in bothdevices, the device attempts to merge the changesautomatically. High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) issupported and active (network service). indicatesthe connection is on hold and that a connectionis available. See "Fast downloading", p. 24. You have set the device to scan for wireless LANs,and a wireless LAN is available (network service).See "About WLAN", p. 33. A wireless LAN connection is active in anetwork that has encryption. A wireless LAN connection is active in a networkthat does not have encryption. Bluetooth connectivity is on. See "Bluetoothconnectivity", p. 36. Data is being transmitted using Bluetoothconnectivity. When the indicator is blinking, yourdevice is trying to connect with another device. A USB connection is active. An infrared connection is active. When youactivate the offline profile, the connection to thewireless network is turned off, as indicated by inthe signal strength indicator area. All wireless RFsignals to and from the device are prevented. If youtry to send messages, they are placed in the outboxto be sent later.When the offline profile is active, you can use yourdevice without a SIM card.Important: In the offline profile you cannotmake or receive any calls, or use other features thatrequire cellular network coverage. Calls may still bepossible to the official emergency numberprogrammed into your device. To make calls, youmust first activate the phone function by changingprofiles. If the device has been locked, enter the lockcode.When you have activated the offline profile, you canstill use the wireless LAN, for example, to read youre-mail or browse on the internet. Blogs or weblogs are web diaries. Mostof the web feeds use RSS and Atom technologies. Itis common to find web feeds on web, blog, and wikipages.The Web application automatically detects if a webpage contains web feeds.To subscribe to a web feed, select Options >Subscribe.To view the web feeds to which you havesubscribed, in the bookmarks view, select Webfeeds.To update a web feed, select it and Options >Refresh.To define how the web feeds are updated, selectOptions > Settings > Web feeds.WidgetsThe web browser supports widgets (networkservice). Widgets are small, downloadable webapplications that deliver multimedia, news feeds,and other information, such as weather reports, toyour device. Theinformation or services you have accessed arestored in the cache.To empty the cache, select Options > Clearprivacy data > Clear cache.End the connectionTo end the connection and view the browser pageoffline, select Options > Tools > Disconnect; orto end the connection and close the browser, selectOptions > Exit.To take the browser to the background, press theend key once. Connection securityIf the security indicator ( ) is displayed during aconnection, the data transmission between thedevice and the internet gateway or server isencrypted.The security icon does not indicate that the datatransmission between the gateway and the contentserver (or place where the requested resource isstored) is secure. The service provider secures thedata transmission between the gateway and thecontent server.Security certificates may be required for someservices, such as banking services. You are notifiedif the identity of the server is not authentic or if youdo not have the correct security certificate in yourdevice. With WLAN, you can connect your device tothe internet and compatible devices that haveWLAN.About WLANTo use WLAN, it must be available in the location,and your device must be connected to the WLAN.Some places, like France, have restrictions on theuse of wireless LAN. Check with your localauthorities for more information.Features that use WLAN, or that are allowed to runin the background while using other features,increase the demand on battery power and reducethe battery life.Your device supports the following WLAN features:●IEEE 802.11b/g standard●Operation at 2.4 GHz●Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) with keys up to128 bits, Wi-Fi protected access (WPA), and802.1x encryption methods. You can use Bluetooth connectivity tosend images, video clips, music and sound clips, andnotes; make a wireless connection to yourcompatible PC (for example, to transfer files); andconnect to a compatible printer to print imageswith Image print.Since devices with Bluetooth wireless technologycommunicate using radio waves, they do not needto be in direct line-of-sight. Digital rights management (DRM) protected contentcomes with an associated activation key thatdefines your rights to use the content.If your device has OMA DRM protected content, toback up both the activation keys and the content,use the backup feature of Nokia PC Suite. Othertransfer methods may not transfer the activationkeys which need to be restored with the content foryou to be able to continue the use of OMA DRMprotected content after the device memory isformatted. You may also need to restore theactivation keys in case the files on your device getcorrupted.If your device has WMDRM protected content, boththe activation keys and the content will be lost if thedevice memory is formatted. You may also lose theactivation keys and the content in case the files onyour device get corrupted. Losing the activationkeys or the content may limit your ability to use thesame content on your device again. The camera hasseveral picture quality modes. Use the highestsetting to make sure that the camera produces thebest picture quality available. Note however, thatbetter picture quality requires more storage space.For multimedia message (MMS) and e-mailattachments it may be necessary to use the smallestpicture quality mode optimised for MMS sending.You can define the quality in the camera settings.See "Still image camera settings", p. 70.BackgroundUse a simple background. For portraits and otherpictures with people, avoid having your subject infront of a cluttered, complex background that maydistract attention from the subject. Move thecamera, or the subject, when these conditionscannot be met. foreground. If the foreground object is too close tothe camera, it may be blurred.Lighting conditionsChanging the source, amount, and direction of lightcan change photographs dramatically. Here aresome typical lighting conditions:●Light source behind the subject. Avoid placingyour subject in front of a strong light source. Ifthe light source is behind the subject or visible inthe display, the resulting picture may have weakcontrast, may be too dark, and may containunwanted light effects.●Sidelit subject. Strong side light gives a dramaticeffect but may be too harsh, resulting in toomuch contrast.●Light source in front of the subject. Harshsunlight may cause the subjects to squint theireyes. The contrast may also be too high.●Optimal lighting is found in situations wherethere is plenty of diffused, soft light available, forexample, on a bright, partially cloudy day or ona sunny day in the shadow of trees.Video recordingTo activate the main camera, press and hold thecapture key, or press , and select Applications >Camera.Video capture indicatorsThe video viewfinder displays the following:1 — Capture mode indicator2 — Audio mute on indicator3 — Active toolbar. Positioning (GPS)About GPSThe Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwideradio navigation system that includes 24 satellitesand their ground stations that monitor theoperation of the satellites. Your device has aninternal GPS receiver.A GPS terminal receives low-power radio signalsfrom the satellites and measures the travel time ofthe signals. From the travel time, the GPS receivercan calculate its location to the accuracy of meters.The coordinates in the GPS are expressed in degreesand decimal degrees format using the internationalWGS-84 coordinate system.The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated bythe government of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by the UnitedStates government and is subject to change withthe United States Department of Defense civil GPSpolicy and the Federal Radionavigation Plan.Accuracy can also be affected by poor satellitegeometry. Availability and quality of GPS signalsmay be affected by your location, buildings, naturalobstacles, and weather conditions. The GPS receivershould only be used outdoors to allow reception ofGPS signals.Any GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely onlocation data from the GPS receiver and cellularradio networks for positioning or navigation.Your device also supports Assisted GPS (A-GPS).Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistancedata over a packet data connection, which assists incalculating the coordinates of your current locationwhen your device is receiving signals fromsatellites.A-GPS is a network service.Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPSservice, if no service provider specific A-GPS settingsare available. The assistance data is retrieved fromthe Nokia A-GPS service server only when needed.You must have a packet data internet access pointdefined in the device to retrieve assistance datafrom the Nokia A-GPS service. When using the receiver, slide the numerickeypad open, and from an upright position, movethe device to an angle of about 45 degrees, with anunobstructed view of the sky. Do not cover thenumeric keypad with your hand.Establishing a GPSconnection may takefrom a couple ofseconds to severalminutes. Establishinga GPS connection inthe car may takelonger.The GPS receiverdraws its power from the device battery. When your devicehas received enough datafrom the satellite signal tocalculate the coordinatesof your location, the barturns black.Initially your device mustreceive signals from atleast four satellites to beable to calculate thecoordinates of yourlocation. When the initialcalculation has been made,it may be possible tocontinue calculating thecoordinates of your location with three satellites.However, the accuracy is generally better whenmore satellites are found.Position requestsYou may receive a request from a network serviceto receive your position information. Serviceproviders may offer information about local topics,such as weather or traffic conditions, based on thelocation of your device.When you receive a position request, a message isdisplayed showing the service that is making therequest. Select Accept to allow your positioninformation to be sent or Reject to deny therequest.MapsAbout MapsPress , and select Maps.With Maps, you can see your current location on themap, browse maps for different cities and countries,search for addresses and different points of interest,plan routes from one location to another, and savelocations as landmarks and send them tocompatible devices.You can also purchase extra services, such as guidesand a turn-by-turn navigation service with voiceguidance.Maps uses GPS. Route guidancePress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Navigation.Start the route guidance outdoors. If startedindoors, the GPS receiver may not receive thenecessary information from the satellites.Route guidance uses a rotating compass on thedevice display. A red ball shows the direction to thedestination, and the approximate distance to it isshown inside the compass ring.Route guidance is designed to show the straightestroute and the shortest distance to the destination,measured in a straight line. Any obstacles on theroute, such as buildings and natural obstacles, areignored. Differences in altitude are not taken intoaccount when calculating the distance. Routeguidance is active only when you move.To set your trip destination, select Options > Setdestination and a landmark as the destination, orenter the latitude and longitude coordinates. SelectStop navigation to clear the destination set foryour trip.Retrieve position informationPress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Position.In the position view, you can view the positioninformation of your current location. An estimate ofthe accuracy of the location is displayed.To save your current location as a landmark, selectOptions > Save position. Landmarks are savedlocations with more information, and they can beused in other compatible applications andtransferred between compatible devices.Trip meterPress , and select Tools > Connectivity > GPSdata > Trip distance.Select Options > Start to activate trip distancecalculation, and Stop to deactivate it. Thecalculated values remain on the display. Use thisfeature outdoors to receive a better GPS signal.Select Reset to set the trip distance and time andaverage and maximum speeds to zero, and to starta new calculation. Select Restart to set theodometer and total time to zero.The trip meter has limited accuracy, and roundingerrors may occur. Personalise your deviceYou can personalise your device by changing thestandby mode, main menu, tones, themes, or fontsize. Most of the personalisation options, such aschanging the font size, can be accessed through thedevice settings. This setting is not availablefor all ringing tones.●Reverberation — Select the type of echo.●Doppler effect — Select On to have the ringingtone sound louder when you are closer to yourdevice, and softer when you are farther away.When you get closer to the device, the ringingtone appears to become louder, and softer whenyou move away from it. Define the repetition, ifneeded. When an alarm is active, is shown.To turn off the sounding alarm, select Stop. To stopthe alarm for 5 minutes, select Snooze.If the alarm time is reached while the device isswitched off, the device switches itself on and startssounding the alarm tone. If you select Stop, thedevice asks whether you want to activate the devicefor calls. Select No to switch off the device or Yes tomake and receive calls. Do not select Yes whenwireless phone use may cause interference ordanger.To cancel an alarm, select Options > Removealarm.To change the time, date, and clock type settings,select Options > Settings.To allow the mobile phone network to update thetime, date, and time zone information to yourdevice (network service), in the settings, selectNetwork operator time > Auto-update.World clockPress , and select Applications > Clock.To open the world clock view, scroll right to theworld clock tab. In the world clock view, you canview the time in different cities. To add cities to thelist, select Options > Add city. You can add amaximum of 15 cities to the list.To set your current city, scroll to a city, and selectOptions > Set as current city. If you attempt to send an e-mailmessage that exceeds the size limit of the e-mailserver, the message is left in the Outbox folder, andthe device attempts to resend it periodically.Sending an e-mail requires a data connection, andcontinuous attemps to resend the e-mail mayincrease your phone bill. Press the call key to send the file toa compatible device (network service).To put an active voice call on hold while answeringanother incoming call, select Options > Hold. Toswitch between the active and the held call, selectOptions > Swap.To send DTMF tone strings (for example, apassword), select Options > Send touch tones.Enter the DTMF string or search for it in Contacts. Tip: When you have only one active voice call,to put the call on hold, press the call key. Toactivate the call, press the call key again.During an active call, to route the sound from thehandset to the loudspeaker, select Options >Activate loudspeaker. Voice diallingYour device supports enhanced voice commands.Enhanced voice commands are not dependent onthe speaker’s voice, so the user does not recordvoice tags in advance. To listen to thesynthesised voice tag, open a contact card, andselect Options > Play voice tag.Make a call with a voice tagNote: Using voice tags may be difficult in anoisy environment or during an emergency, so youshould not rely solely upon voice dialing in allcircumstances.When you use voice dialling, the loudspeaker is inuse. Hold the device at a short distance away whenyou say the voice tag.1. To start voice dialling, in the standby mode,press and hold the right selection key. If acompatible headset with the headset key isattached, press and hold the headset key to startvoice dialling.2. A short tone is played, and Speak now isdisplayed. Say clearly the name or nickname thatis saved on the contact card.3. The live video image,or video image captured by the camera in yourdevice is shown to the video call recipient.To be able to make a video call, you must have aUSIM card and be in the coverage of a UMTS network.For availability of and subscription to video callservices, contact your network service provider.A video call can only be made between two parties.The video call can be made to a compatible mobiledevice or an ISDN client. Video calls cannot be madewhile another voice, video, or data call is active.Icons You are not receiving video (the recipient is notsending video or the network is not transmitting it). If you do not want to use the loudspeakerfor the voice call while you share video, you can alsouse a compatible headset.RequirementsVideo sharing requires a UMTS connection. Yourability to use video sharing depends on theavailability of the UMTS network. Contact yourservice provider for more information on the serviceand network availability and fees associated withusing this service.To use video sharing you must do the following:●Ensure that your device is set up for person-to-person connections.●Ensure you have an active UMTS connection andare within UMTS network coverage. If you startthe sharing session while you are within UMTSnetwork coverage and a hand over to GSM occurs,the sharing session is discontinued, but yourvoice call continues. You cannot start videosharing if you are not within UMTS networkcoverage.●Ensure that both the sender and recipient areregistered to the UMTS network. If you invitesomeone to a sharing session and the recipient’sdevice is not within UMTS network coverage,does not have video sharing installed, or person-to-person connections set up, the recipient doesnot know that you are sending an invitation. Youreceive an error message that indicates that therecipient cannot accept the invitation.SettingsTo set up video sharing, you need person-to-personand UMTS connection settings.Person-to-person connection settingsA person-to-person connection is also known as aSession Initiation Protocol (SIP) connection. The SIPprofile settings must be configured in your devicebefore you can use video sharing. Ask your serviceprovider for the SIP profile settings, and save themin your device. A list of video clipssaved on the device memory or mass memoryopens. Select a clip you want to share. Topreview the clip, select Options > Play.2. If you share live video, your device sends theinvitation to the SIP address you have added tothe contact card of the recipient.If you share a video clip, select Options >Invite. You may need to convert the video clipinto a suitable format to be able to share it. Clipmust be converted for sharing. Continue?appears. Select OK.If the contact information of the recipient issaved in Contacts, and the contact has several SIPaddresses or phone numbers including thecountry code, select the desired address ornumber. If the SIP address or phone number ofthe recipient is not available, enter the SIPaddress or the phone number of the recipientincluding the country code, and select OK tosend the invitation.3. Sharing begins automatically when the recipientaccepts the invitation.4. To pause the sharing session, select Pause. Toresume sharing, select Continue. Scroll right to see a list of personalcertificates, if available.Digital certificates should be used if you want toconnect to an online bank or another site or remoteserver for actions that involve transferringconfidential information. They should also be usedif you want to reduce the risk of viruses or othermalicious software and be sure of the authenticityof software when downloading and installingsoftware.Important: Even if the use of certificatesmakes the risks involved in remote connections andsoftware installation considerably smaller, theymust be used correctly in order to benefit fromincreased security. Battery informationCharging and dischargingYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery.The battery can be charged and dischargedhundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out.When the talk and standby times are noticeablyshorter than normal, replace the battery. Use onlyNokia approved batteries, and recharge yourbattery only with Nokia approved chargersdesignated for this device.If a replacement battery is being used for the firsttime or if the battery has not been used for aprolonged period, it may be necessary to connectthe charger, then disconnect and reconnect it tobegin charging the battery.Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and thedevice when not in use. Do not leave a fully chargedbattery connected to a charger, since overchargingmay shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fullycharged battery will lose its charge over time.If the battery is completely discharged, it may takeseveral minutes before the charging indicatorappears on the display or before any calls can bemade.Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Neveruse any charger or battery that is damaged.Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object such asa coin, clip, or pen causes direct connection of thepositive (+) and negative (-) terminals of thebattery.
