A long press of the scroll key left, right, up, ordown accelerates the scrolling.4 — Selection key. Set up your deviceSet up your E71 following these instructions.Insert the SIM card andbattery1. Press the release buttons and lift the back cover off.2. If the battery is inserted, lift the battery in thedirection of the arrow to remove it.3. Insert the SIM card. Make sure that the contact areaon the card is facing the connectors on the deviceand that the bevelled corner is facing the top of thedevice.4. Insert the battery. 5. Close the back cover.Charge the battery1. Connect a compatible charger to a wall outlet.2. Connect the power cord to the device. If the batteryis completely discharged, it may take a while beforethe charging indicator starts scrolling.3. When the battery is fully charged, disconnect thecharger from the device, then from the wall outlet.Your battery has been precharged at the factory, butthe charging levels may vary. To reach the fulloperation time, charge the battery until it has beenfully charged according to the battery level indicator.Tip: If you have old compatible Nokia chargers,you can use them with the Nokia E71 byattaching the CA-44 charger adapter to the oldcharger. The adapter is available as a separateenhancement.Insert the memorycardThe sales package of your device may not include amemory card. Memory cards are available as separateenhancements.1. Open the cover of the memory card slot.2. Insert the memory card in the slot with the contactarea first. Make sure that the contact area is facingthe connectors on the device.3. 4. Close the cover.Eject the memory cardImportant: Do not remove the memory card in themiddle of an operation when the card is beingaccessed. Removing the card in the middle of anoperation may damage the memory card as well as thedevice, and data stored on the card may be corrupted.1. Press the power key briefly, and select Removememory card.2. Open the cover of the memory card slot.3. Press the end of the memory card to release it fromthe memory card slot.4. Close the cover.Connect the headsetWarning: When you use the headset, your abilityto hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use theheadset where it can endanger your safety.Connect the compatible headset to the headsetconnector of your device.Attach the wrist strapThread the wrist strap as shown, andtighten it.AntennasYour device may have internal and external antennas.As with any radio transmitting device, avoid touchingthe antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna istransmitting or receiving. Get startedAfter you have set up your device, switch it on and startto explore what is new in Eseries.First start-up1. Press and hold the power key untilyou feel the device vibrate.2. If prompted, enter the PIN code orlock code, and select OK.3. When prompted, enter the country inwhich you are located and the currentdate and time. To find your country,enter the first letters of the countryname. It is important to select thecorrect country, because scheduledcalendar entries may change if youchange the country later and the newcountry is located on a different time zone.4. The Welcome application opens. Select from thevarious options, or select Exit to close theapplication.To configure the various settings in your device, usethe wizards available on the home screen and theSettings wizard application. When you switch thedevice on, it may recognise the SIM card provider andconfigure some settings automatically. You can alsocontact your service provider for the correct settings.You can switch the device on without inserting a SIMcard. You can define two separate home screens for differentpurposes, such as one screen to show your business e-mail and notifications, and another to show yourpersonal e-mail. This way, you do not have to seebusiness-related messages outside office hours.MenuSelect Menu.The menu is a starting pointfrom which you can open allapplications in the device oron a memory card.The menu containsapplications and folders,which are groups of similarapplications. Allapplications you install inthe device yourself are bydefault saved in theInstallations folder.To open an application,scroll to it, and press thescroll key.To view the applications in a list, select Options >Change view > List view. To return to the grid view,select Options > Change view > Grid view.To make the application icons and folders animated,select Options > Icon animation > On.To view the memory consumption of differentapplications and data stored on the device or memorycard and to check the amount of free memory, selectOptions > Memory details.To create a new folder, select Options > Newfolder.To rename a new folder, select Options > Rename.To rearrange the folder, scroll to the application youwant to move, and select Options > Move. A checkmark is placed beside the application. Scroll to a newlocation, and select OK.To move an application to a different folder, scroll tothe application you want to move, and selectOptions > Move to folder, the new folder, and OK.To download applications from the web, selectOptions > Download applications.TransferSelect Menu > Tools > Switch.You can transfer content, such as contacts, from acompatible Nokia device to your new Eseries deviceusing Bluetooth connectivity or infrared. The type ofcontent that can be transferred depends on the devicemodel. If the other device supports synchronisation,you can also synchronise data between the two devicesor send data from this device to the other device.When you transfer data from your previous device, itmay require you to insert the SIM card. Your new Eseriesdevice does not need a SIM card when transferringdata.Content is copied from the memory of the other deviceto the corresponding location in your device. The items that youcan transfer vary depending on the other device.Transfer content betweendevicesTo connect the two devices, follow the instructions onthe display. For some device models, the Transferapplication is sent to the other device as a message. Toinstall Transfer on the other device, open the message,and follow the instructions on the display. On your newEseries device, select the content you want to copyfrom the other device.After the data transfer, you can save the shortcut withthe transfer settings to the main view to repeat thesame transfer later. To edit the shortcut, selectOptions > Shortcut settings.Display indicatorsThe device is being used in a UMTS network(network service).The battery charge level. The higher the bar,the stronger the charge in the battery.You have one or more unread messages in theInbox folder in Messaging.You have received new e-mail in the remotemailbox.There are messages waiting to be sent in theOutbox folder in Messaging.You have one or more missed phone calls.The keys of the device are locked.An alarm is active.You have selected the Silent profile, and thedevice does not ring for an incoming call ormessage.Bluetooth is active.Data is being transmitted using Bluetoothconnectivity. When the indicator is blinking,your device is trying to connect with anotherdevice.An infrared connection is active. Common actions inseveral applicationsYou can find the following actions in severalapplications:To change the profile, or switch off or lock the device,press the power key briefly.If an application consists ofseveral tabs (see figure),open a tab by scrolling rightor left.To save the settings that youhave configured in anapplication, select Back.To save a file, selectOptions > Save. There aredifferent saving optionsdepending on theapplication you use.To send a file, selectOptions > Send. You can send a file in an e-mail ormultimedia message, or using Bluetooth connectivityor infrared.To copy, press and hold the shift key, and select the textwith the scroll key. Press and hold the shift key, andselect Copy. To paste, scroll to where you want to pastethe text, press and hold the shift key, and selectPaste. This method may not work in applications thathave their own copy and paste commands.To select different items, such as messages, files, orcontacts, scroll to the item you want to select. SelectOptions > Mark/Unmark > Mark to select one itemor Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all to select allitems.Tip: To select almost all items, first selectOptions > Mark/Unmark > Mark all, thenselect the items you do not want, and Options >Mark/Unmark > Unmark.To select an object (for example, an attachment in adocument) scroll to the object so that square markersappear on each side of the object.Lock the keysWhen the device or keypad is locked, calls may bepossible to the official emergency numberprogrammed into your device.The keypad of your device locks automatically toprevent the keys from being accidentally pressed. To lock the keys manuallyin the home screen, pressthe left selection key andthe function key.To lock the keys manuallyin the menu or in an openapplication, press thepower key briefly, andselect Lock keypad.To unlock the keys, pressthe left selection key andthe function key.Volume controlTo adjust the earpiece volume during a phone call orthe volume of the media applications, use the volumekeys.MemoryThere are two types of memory into which you can savedata or install applications: device memory andmemory card.Free memoryTo see how much memory is currently in use, howmuch free memory remains, and how much memory isconsumed by each data type, select Menu >Options > Memory details > Phone memory orMemory card.Tip: To ensure that you have adequate memory,transfer data regularly to a memory card orcomputer, or use File manager to delete files youno longer need.After you install applications to a compatible memorycard, installation files (.sis, .sisx) remain in the devicememory. The files may use large amounts of memoryand prevent you from storing other files. To maintainsufficient memory, use Nokia PC Suite to back upinstallation files to a compatible PC, then use the filemanager to remove the installation files from thedevice memory. Your service provider may chargeaccordingly. Characters with accents or other marks,and characters from some language options, take upmore space, and limit the number of characters thatcan be sent in a single message.1. To write a text message, select New message >Text message.2. In the To field, enter a recipient's number, or pressthe scroll key to add a recipient from Contacts. If youenter more than one number, separate thenumbers with a semicolon.3. Enter the text of the message. To use a template,select Options > Insert > Template.4. You canalso use your device as a modem and connect your PCto the internet.WebSelect Menu > Web.To browse the web (network service), you need toconfigure the internet access point settings. If you areusing a GPRS connection, your wireless network mustsupport GPRS, and the service must be activated foryour SIM card.Tip: You may receive the internet access pointsettings from your service provider as a specialtext message or from the service provider's webpages. The service provider secures the datatransmission between the gateway and the contentserver.Security certificates may be required for some services,such as banking services. To receive data using Bluetooth, select Bluetooth >On and My phone's visibility > Shown to all toreceive data from a non-paired device or Hidden toreceive data from a paired device only. When youreceive data through Bluetooth, a tone sounds, and youare asked if you want to accept the message in whichthe data is included. If you accept, the message isplaced in the Inbox folder in the Messaging application.Tip: You can access the files in the device or onthe memory card using a compatible accessorythat supports the File Transfer Profile Clientservice (for example, a laptop computer).A Bluetooth connection is disconnected automaticallyafter sending or receiving data. Only Nokia PC Suite andsome enhancements such as headsets may maintain aconnection even if not actively used.Pair devicesOpen the paired devices tab.Before pairing, create your own passcode (1-16 digits),and agree with the user of the other device to use thesame code. Devices that do not have a user interfacehave a fixed passcode. You need the passcode onlywhen you connect the devices for the first time. Afterpairing, it is possible to authorise the connection.Pairing and authorising the connection makesconnecting quicker and easier, as you do not have toaccept the connection between paired devices everytime you establish a connection.The passcode for remote SIM access must have 16digits.1. If you arecurrently connected to a device and cancel the pairingwith that device, pairing is removed immediately, andthe connection is ended.To allow a paired device to connect automatically toyour device, select Set as authorised. Connectionsbetween your device and the other device can be madewithout your knowledge. No separate acceptance orauthorisation is needed. Use this status for your owndevices, such as your compatible headset or computer,or devices that belong to someone you trust. You can only be connected to one WLANaccess point device at a time, but several applicationscan use the same internet access point.When the device is in the Offline profile, you can stilluse WLAN, if available. Security and data managementManage the data and software on your device, and takecare of the security of the device and its contents.Important: Your device can only support oneantivirus application. Having more than oneapplication with antivirus functionality could affectperformance and operation or cause the device to stopfunctioning.Lock the deviceImportant: If the device has been locked, enter thelock code to activate the phone function. When thedevice is locked, calls may be possible to the officialemergency number. Making an emergency call in theoffline profile or when the device is locked requiresthat the device recognise the number to be an officialemergency number. It is advisable to change theprofile or unlock the device by entering the lock codebefore you make the emergency call.To prevent access to the contents of your device, lockthe device when in home screen. Press the power key,select Lock phone, and enter your lock code. Thedefault lock code is 12345. To unlock, press the leftselection key, enter your lock code, and press the scrollkey.To change the lock code, select Menu > Tools >Settings > General > Security > Phone and SIMcard > Lock code. Enter the old code and then thenew code twice. The new code can be 4-255 characterslong. Both alphabets and digits can be used, and bothuppercase and lowercase alphabets are possible.You can also lock the device remotely by sending a textmessage to the device. To enable remote locking andto define the text for the message, select Menu >Tools > Settings > General > Security > Phoneand SIM card > Allow remote lock > Yes. Enter theremote lock message and confirm the message. Themessage must be at least 5 characters long.Memory card securitySelect Menu > Tools > Memory.You can protect a memory card with a password toprevent unauthorised access. To set a password, selectOptions > Set password. The password can be up to8 characters long and is case-sensitive. The passwordis stored in your device. You do not need to enter itagain while you use the memory card on the samedevice. If you use the memory card on another device,you are asked for the password. To remove the memory card password, selectOptions > Remove password. When you remove thepassword, the data on the memory card is notprotected against unauthorised use.To open a locked memory card, select Options >Unlock memory card. Enter the password.If you cannot recall the password to unlock a lockedmemory card, you may reformat the card, in which casethe card is unlocked and password removed.Formatting a memory card destroys all data stored onthe card.EncryptionSelect Menu > Tools > Encryption.Encrypt your device or memory card to preventoutsiders from accessing your important information.Encrypt device memory ormemory cardTo encrypt the device memory, select Phonememory.To encrypt the memory card, select Memory card andfrom the following:•Encrypt without saving key — Encrypt thememory card without saving the encryption key. Ifyou select this option, you cannot use the memorycard in other devices, and if you restore factorysettings, you cannot decrypt the memory card.•Encrypt and save key — Encrypt the memory cardand save the key manually in the default folder. Forsecurity, store the key to a safe place outside thedevice. For example, you can send the key to yourcomputer. Enter a pass phrase for the key and aname for the key file. The pass phrase should be longand complex.•Encrypt with restored key — Encrypt the memorycard with a key you have received. To restrict calls by acountry prefix, enter the country prefix in the list ofnumbers. All phone numbers to which calls areallowed must start with this country prefix.2. Select Options > Activate fixed dialling. Youneed your PIN2 code to activate and deactivatefixed dialling or edit your fixed dialling contacts.Contact your service provider if you do not have thecode. To cancel the service, select Options >Deactivate fixed dialling.Tip: To send text messages to the SIM contactswhile the fixed dialling service is active, youneed to add the text message centre number tothe fixed dialling list.Certificate managerSelect Menu > Tools > Settings > General >Security > Certificate management.Digital certificates are used to verify the origins ofsoftware but do not guarantee safety. There are fourdifferent types of certificates: authority certificates,personal certificates, trusted site certificates, anddevice certificates. During a secure connection, a servermay send a server certificate to your device. Uponreceipt, it is checked through an authority certificatestored in your device. You receive notification if theidentity of the server is not authentic or if you do nothave the correct certificate in your device.Download a certificate from a web site, or receive acertificate as an e-mail attachment, or as a messagesent through a Bluetooth or infrared connection.Certificates should be used when you connect to anonline bank or a remote server to transfer confidentialinformation. They should also be used if you want toreduce the risk of viruses or other malicious software,and to check the authenticity of software when youdownload and install software to your device.Tip: When you add a new certificate, check itsauthenticity.View certificate detailsYou can only be sure of the correct identity of a serverwhen the signature and the validity period of a servercertificate have been checked.To view certificate details, select View details.One of the following notes may appear:•Certificate not trusted — You have not set anyapplication to use the certificate. Certificate trust settingsTrusting a certificate means that you authorise it toverify web pages, e-mail servers, software packages,and other data. Only trusted certificates can be used toverify services and software.Important: Even if the use of certificates makesthe risks involved in remote connections and softwareinstallation considerably smaller, they must be usedcorrectly in order to benefit from increased security.The existence of a certificate does not offer anyprotection by itself; the certificate manager mustcontain correct, authentic, or trusted certificates forincreased security to be available. Certificates have arestricted lifetime. If "Expired certificate" or "Certificatenot valid yet" is shown, even if the certificate shouldbe valid, check that the current date and time in yourdevice are correct.Before changing any certificate settings, you mustmake sure that you really trust the owner of thecertificate and that the certificate really belongs to thelisted owner.To change the trust settings, select a certificate andOptions > Trust settings. To set a time-out after which the device isautomatically locked and can be used only if the correctlock code is entered, select Phone and SIM card >Phone autolock period. Enter a number for the time-out in minutes, or select None to set off the autolockperiod. When the device is locked, you can still answerincoming calls, and calls may still be possible to theofficial emergency number programmed into yourdevice.To set a new lock code, select Phone and SIM card >Lock code. The preset lock code is 12345. Enter thecurrent code and then the new code twice. The newcode can be 4-255 characters long. Both alphabets anddigits can be used, and both uppercase and lowercasealphabets are possible. Battery and charger informationBattery and chargerinformationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. Thebattery intended for use with this device is BP-4L. Thisdevice is intended for use when supplied with powerfrom the following chargers: AC-5 . The battery can becharged and discharged hundreds of times, but it willeventually wear out. When the talk and standby timesare noticeably shorter than normal, replace thebattery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, andrecharge your battery only with Nokia approvedchargers designated for this device. Use of anunapproved battery or charger may present a risk offire, explosion, leakage, or other hazard.If a battery is being used for the first time or if thebattery has not been used for a prolonged period, itmay be necessary to connect the charger, thendisconnect and reconnect it to begin charging thebattery. If the battery is completely discharged, it maytake several minutes before the charging indicatorappears on the display or before any calls can be made.Always switch the device off and disconnect thecharger before removing the battery.Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and thedevice when not in use.
