Basic information about your deviceNote: Your service provider may have requestedthat certain features be disabled or not activated inyour device. If so, they do not appear on your devicemenu. Your device may also have been speciallyconfigured for your network provider. Thisconfiguration may include changes in menu names,menu order and icons. If not, contact your service provider forthe correct settings, or use the Sett. wizard application.MenuThe Menu is a starting point from which you can openall applications in the device or on a memory card. TheMenu contains applications and folders, which aregroups of similar applications. Use the scroll key to scrollup and down on the screen.Applications that you install are saved in the Installat.folder by default.To open an application, scroll to it, and press the scrollkey.To view the applications in a list, select Options >Change view > List. Most commonpunctuation marks either have a key of their own orthey can be entered by pressing a combination of keys., and indicate the selected case.Some characters (for example, punctuation marks andsymbols) are marked with color on the keys. To inserta character marked with color, press the function key,and the key that has the character you want.To insert a number, press the function key so that isshown on the display, and a key with a number on thecolor background. To lock the function key and insertonly numbers, press the function key twice so that is shown on the display.To erase a character, press the backspace key. Press andhold the backspace key to clear more than onecharacter.To open a list of special characters, press the Chr key.Use the scroll key to scroll through the list and select acharacter.To add characters by using other keys such as "A" or "O",press and hold the Chr key and simultaneously press theother key as many times as is needed before thecharacter you want is shown.To switch between the different character cases, pressthe shift key, so that is shown on the display.Copy and paste text1. Change the writinglanguageWhen you write text, you can change the writinglanguage. When you are writing and press Chr+a keyseveral times to use a specific character, changing thewriting language gives you access to differentcharacters.For example, if you are writing a message using a non-Latin alphabet and want to add a person's name usingLatin alphabets, select Options > Writing language anda writing language that uses Latin characters.Common actions in severalapplicationsYou can find the following actions in severalapplications:To switch between open applications, press and holdthe menu key to see a list of open applications. Selectan application.To change the profile or switch off or lock the device,press the power key briefly.To save a file, select Options > Save. There are differentsave options depending on the application you use.To send a file, select Options > Send. There are differentsend options depending on the application you use,such as e-mail or multimedia messages and infrared orBluetooth connectivity.To print to a compatible printer, select Options >Printing options > Print. You can preview items that youwant to print, or edit the way printed pages look. Beforeyou can print, you must define a compatible printer toyour device. See "Print," p. 68.To delete a file, press the backspace key, or selectOptions > Delete.MemoryThere are two types of memory into which you can savedata or install applications: device memory andremovable memory.Memory detailsSelect Menu, and Options > Memory details and Phonemem. or Memory card.You can see how much memory is currently in use, howmuch free memory remains, and how much memory isconsumed by each data type. For example, you can seehow much memory your e-mail messages, textdocuments, or calendar appointments consume.Tip: To ensure that you have adequatememory, you should regularly delete ortransfer data to a memory card or PC.Memory cardYour Nokia device supports the FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems for memory cards. from another device or if you want to ensurecompatibility of the memory card with your Nokiadevice, you may need to format the memory card withyour Nokia device. However, all data in the memory cardis permanently deleted if you format the memory card.Format a memory cardWhen a memory card is formatted, all data on the cardis lost permanently. Consult your retailer to find out ifyou must format the memory card before you can useit. To format a memory card, select Options > Formatmem. card. When formatting is complete, enter a namefor the memory card.Back up and restore to the memory cardIt is recommended to back up device memory regularlyto the memory card. The information can be restoredto your device later. To back up information from devicememory to a memory card, select Menu > Tools >Memory > Options > Backup phone mem.. To restoreinformation from the memory card to the devicememory, select Menu > Tools > Memory > Options >Restore from card.If you cannot use a memory card in your device, youmay have the wrong type of memory card, the card maynot be formatted for your device, or the card has acorrupted file system.Tip: You can insert and remove a memory cardwithout removing the battery or switching offthe device.Installing applicationsYou can use Nokia PC Suite to install applications. NokiaPC Suite transfers the installation file to your device, andthe installation starts automatically. You can alsodownload an installation file from the web, in whichcase the installation may start automatically. If theinstallation does not start automatically, locate andselect the installation file on your device, and press thescroll key.Voice aidSelect Menu > Tools > Voice aid.The voice aid application reads text on the screen,allowing you to use basic functions of your devicewithout looking at the display.Select from the following:•Contacts — Hear the entries in your contacts list. Hear your messagesMessage reader readinessMessage reader reads your received text messagesaloud. The application is available in your device inEnglish. To download additional languages, visitwww.nokia.com.Select Menu > Office > Msg. reader.Select the text message you want to be read, and selectPlay. You can also activate Msg. reader by pressing andholding the left selection key when you receive a textmessage.To start reading the next message in your Inbox, scrollright. To start reading the previous message, scroll left.To pause the reading, press the left selection key briefly.To continue, press the left selection key briefly again.To end the reading, press the end key.SpeechWith Speech you can set the language, voice and voiceproperties for Msg. reader.Select Menu > Tools > Speech.Voice propertiesTo edit the voice properties for the synthesized speech,select Menu > Tools > Speech > Voice settings.Select from the following options:•Speed — Select the desired speech rate.•Volume — Set the volume level for the speech.Voice managementTo manage the voices available for the selectedlanguage, select Menu > Tools > Speech, and scroll right.Scroll to a voice, select Options and from the following:•Play voice — Listen to the selected voice.•Voice details — View information about the voice.•Delete — Delete the selected voice.ProfilesImportant: In the offline profile you cannot makeor receive any calls, or use other features that requirecellular network coverage. Calls may still be possible tothe official emergency number programmed into yourdevice. To make calls, you must first activate the phonefunction by changing profiles. If the device has beenlocked, enter the lock code.Select Menu > Tools > Profiles.You can adjust and customize the ringing tones, alerttones, and other device tones for different events,environments, or caller groups.To customize a profile, scroll to the desired profile inthe list, and select Options > Customize.Define the following settings:•Ringing tone — Select a ringing tone from the list,or select Tone downloads to open a bookmark foldercontaining a list of bookmarks for downloadingtones using the browser. Transfer content between devicesYou can transfer content, such as contacts, from acompatible Nokia device to your Nokia E61i usingBluetooth connectivity or infrared. The type of contentthat can be transferred depends on the phone model.If the other device supports synchronization, you canalso synchronize data between the other device andyour Nokia E61i.Transfer data withBluetooth or infraredTip: If you transfer data from your previousdevice, the device may require you to insert theSIM card. Your Nokia E61i does not need a SIMcard when transferring data.To start transferring data from a compatible device,select Menu > Tools > Transfer > Transfer data.Bluetooth connectivity1. In the information view, select Continue.2. Select Via Bluetooth. Both devices must support theselected connection type.3. Activate Bluetooth in your other device, and selectContinue in your Nokia E61i to start searching fordevices with active Bluetooth connectivity.4. Select Stop in your Nokia E61i after it has found yourother device.5. Select your other device from the list. You are askedto enter a passcode (1 to 16 digits) on your NokiaE61i. You can also receive web servicemessages, cell broadcast messages, and specialmessages containing data, and send servicecommands.Before sending or receiving messages, you may need todo the following:•Insert a valid SIM card in the device and be locatedin a service area of the cellular network.•Verify that the network supports the messagingfeatures you want to use and that they are activatedon your SIM card.•Define Internet access point (IAP) settings on thedevice. When you create a new mailbox, the name you give tothe mailbox replaces Mailbox in the Messag. main view.Select your default mailboxIf you have defined several mailboxes, you can selectone of them as your default mailbox. To define thedefault mailbox, select Options > Settings > E-mail >Default mailbox and the mailbox.If you have defined several mailboxes, you must selectthe mailbox that you want to use every time you startcomposing a new e-mail message.Configure the e-mail keyYour device has an e-mail key. With the e-mail key, youcan access your default e-mail inbox or open yourdefault e-mail editor from the active standby. Thefunctionality depends also on your mailbox serviceprovider.To configure the e-mail key, select Menu > Tools > E-mail key. Select the e-mail account that you want to usewith the e-mail key.Connect to mailboxE-mail addressed to you is not automatically receivedby your device, but by your remote mailbox. You can only subscribe to folders inyour IMAP4 mailboxes. Multimedia messagesA multimedia message (MMS) can contain text andobjects such as images, sound clips, or video clips.Only devices that have compatible features can receiveand display multimedia messages. The appearance ofa message may vary depending on the receiving device.Before you can send or receive multimedia messageson your device, you must define the multimediamessage settings. Your device may have recognized theSIM card provider and automatically configured themultimedia message settings. If not, contact yourservice provider. See "Multimedia messagesettings," p. 31.Create and send multimediamessagesSelect New message > Multimedia message.1. The GPRS connection is put onhold during voice calls unless the network supportsdual transfer mode.Make a callImportant: If the device has been locked, enterthe lock code to activate the phone function. When thedevice is locked, calls may be possible to the officialemergency number. Making an emergency call in theoffline profile or when the device is locked requires thatthe device recognize the number to be an officialemergency number. CalendarSelect Menu > Calendar.In Calendar, you can create and view scheduled eventsand appointments. You can also set alarms for calendarentries.You can synchronize your calendar data with acompatible computer using Nokia PC Suite. Forinformation on synchronization, see the PC Suite guide.Create calendar entriesYou can create four types of calendar entries:•Meeting entries have a specific date and time.•Memo entries are related to the whole day but notto a specific time of the day. Memo entries do notappear in the weekly time schedule view.•Anniversary entries remind you of birthdays andspecial dates. They refer to a certain day but not aspecific time of the day. Anniversary entries arerepeated every year.•To-do entries remind you of a task that has a duedate but not a specific time of the day.To create a calendar entry, scroll to a date, and selectOptions > New entry. ConnectivityYour device offers several options (network services) toconnect to the Internet, a corporate intranet, or toanother device or PC. Wireless methods include wirelessLAN, Bluetooth, and infrared. Your device supports awired solution with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) cableconnection for Nokia PC Suite. Your device also allowsyou to communicate using net calls (Voice over IP),instant messaging (chat), and modem-basedconnections.Packet data (GPRS)GPRS (general packet radio service) enables wirelessaccess for mobile phones to data networks (networkservice). GPRS uses packet data technology whereinformation is sent in short bursts of data over themobile network. The benefit of sending data in packetsis that the network is occupied only when sending orreceiving data. As GPRS uses the network efficiently, itallows for quick data connection set-up and fast datatransmission speeds.You must subscribe to the GPRS service. For availabilityand subscription to GPRS, contact your networkoperator or service provider.Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) is similar to GPRS, but it enablesfaster connection. For more information on theavailability of EGPRS and data transfer speed, contactyour network operator or service provider. Note thatwhen you have selected GPRS as a data bearer, thedevice uses EGPRS instead of GPRS if this is available inthe network.During a voice call, you cannot establish a GPRSconnection, and any existing GPRS connection is put onhold unless the network supports dual transfer mode.Cable connectionInstall the USB data cable driver to your PC before youuse a cable connection. CameraYou can take photos or record video clips with the built-in camera. The camera lens is on the back of the device,and the display works as a viewfinder. The cameraproduces pictures in .jpeg format and video clips in .3gpp format.Take a picture1. Select Menu > Media > Camera.Your device supports an image capture resolutionof up to 1600 x 1200 pixels.2. Use the display as a viewfinder, aim at your subject,and press the scroll key. The device saves the photoin the default folder, or in the folder you havedefined.Tip: To zoom in or out before taking apicture, scroll up or down.3. If you do not want to keep the saved photo, selectOptions > Delete. Select Back to return to theviewfinder to take another picture. Battery informationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. Thebattery can be charged and discharged hundreds oftimes, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk andstandby times are noticeably shorter than normal,replace the battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries,and recharge your battery only with Nokia approvedchargers designated for this device.If a replacement battery is being used for the first timeor if the battery has not been used for a prolongedperiod, it may be necessary to connect the charger, thendisconnect and reconnect it to begin charging thebattery.Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and thedevice when not in use. Do not leave a fully chargedbattery connected to a charger, since overcharging mayshorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully chargedbattery will lose its charge over time.If the battery is completely discharged, it may takeseveral minutes before the charging indicator appearson the display or before any calls can be made.Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never useany charger or battery that is damaged.Do not short-circuit the battery.
