2INSTALLING THE NiCd BATTERYPACK (OPTIONAL)The battery pack is not charged at thefactory. Charge the pack before use.Repeat the charge/discharge cycles twoor three times after purchase orextended storage (greater than2 months) to bring the battery pack toits normal operating capacity.1Match the four grooves of the batterypack with the corresponding guideson the back of the transceiver.2Slide the battery pack along the backof the transceiver until the releaselatch on the base of the transceiverlocks.3To remove the battery pack, pushdown on the release latch and slidethe pack away from the transceiver.CAUTION:◆DO NOT RECHARGE THE BATTERY PACK IFIT IS ALREADY FULLY CHARGED. DOINGTHIS WILL OVERCHARGE THE BATTERYPACK WHICH MAY SHORTEN ITS LIFE ORDAMAGE IT.◆AFTER RECHARGING THE BATTERY PACK,DISCONNECT IT FROM THE CHARGER. 3INSTALLING THE ANTENNA (OPTIONAL)Screw the antenna into the connectoron the top of the transceiver by holdingthe antenna at its base and turning itclockwise until secure.INSTALLING THE CAP OVER THEUNIVERSAL CONNECTORWhen a speaker/microphone is notbeing used, install the cap over theuniversal connector using the suppliedaccessory screw (4 x 6 mm).Note: To keep the transceiver water resistant, youmust cover the universal connector with the cap orthe speaker/microphone connector.The antennaconnector of thetransceiver is anSMA male typeconnector.INSTALLING THE BELT HOOKIf necessary, attach the belt hook usingthe two binding screws (3 x 6 mm)which are supplied in the screw set.Note: If the belt hook is not installed, its mountinglocation may get hot during continuoustransmission or when left sitting in a hotenvironment.

10BASIC OPERATIONS■Switching Power ON/OFFTo switch ON the transceiver, turnthe Power switch/Volume controlclockwise until it clicks.To switch OFF the transceiver, turnthe Power switch/Volume controlcounterclockwise until it clicks.If the Radio Password function isprogrammed {page 16}, LOCKEDwill appear on the display when thepower is turned ON. To unlock thetransceiver, enter the password, thenpress the # key. If the wrongpassword is entered, an error tonewill sound, and the transceiver willremain locked. The password canbe a maximum of 6 digits. (Thisfunction is available on keypadmodels only.)■Adjusting the VolumeTurn the Power switch/Volumecontrol to adjust the volume.Clockwise increases the volume,and counterclockwise decreases it.■Selecting a GroupTurn the Selector, press the GroupUp and Group Down keys, or usethe toggle switch to select a group.•Use the Selector, PF keys, or toggleswitch, depending on which one isprogrammed with the group functions.
11■Making a Call1Select the desired group andchannel {page 10}.2Use the key or switchprogrammed as Monitor to checkwhether or not the channel isfree.•If the channel is busy, wait until itbecomes free.3Press and hold the PTT switch,then speak into the microphonein your normal voice.•For best results, hold thetransceiver approximately 3 to4 cm (1 1/2 inches) from your lips.4Release the PTT switch toreceive.■Selecting a ChannelTurn the Selector or press theChannel Up and Channel Downkeys to select a channel.•Use the Selector or PF keys,depending on which one isprogrammed with the channelfunctions.■Adjusting the Squelch1Press the key programmed asSquelch Level.2Press the keys programmed asGroup Up and Group Down orChannel Up and Channel Downto adjust the squelch level.
12SCANNINGNote: The Scan function can be used with aminimum of two channels.Scan is used to monitor signals on thetransceiver channels. When scanning,the transceiver checks each channel fora signal, and stops on a channel if oneis present.Use the key or switch programmed asScan.•“SCAN” or the revert group/channelnumber (depending on which one isprogrammed by your dealer), and theSCN icon will appear on the display.•A confirmation tone will sound.To quit scanning, use the Scan key orswitch again.•Two confirmation tones will sound.KEY LOCKUse the key or switch programmed asKey Lock to activate the Key Lockfunction. When activated, only the PTTand toggle switch, the Selector, andthe keys programmed as EmergencyCall, Monitor, Monitor Momentary,SP Attenuation, Squelch OFF,Squelch Momentary, and Lamp canbe used.TIME-OUT TIMER (TOT)The TOT is used to automatically inhibittransmission after a specified timeelapses. If the PTT switch is held downfor longer than the programmed time,the transceiver will stop transmitting anda warning tone will sound. To stop thewarning tone, release the PTT switch.Note: TOT settings can be programmed by yourdealer {page 16}.
13DTMF CALLINGNote: This function can only be used bytransceivers with DTMF keypads.■Manual DialingTo dial a number manually:1Press and hold the PTT switch.•If Keypad Auto PTT is enabled{page 16}, you do not need topress the PTT switch.2Press the desired DTMF keys.■Priority ScanFor Priority Scan to function, thePriority1 or Priority2 channel mustbe programmed.•If only one of the priority channels areprogrammed, the transceiver willautomatically change to that prioritychannel when a signal is received onit. This change occurs even if asignal is being received on anotherchannel.•If both priority channels areprogrammed, Priority1 is the highpriority and Priority2 is the lowpriority. If a signal is being receivedon the Priority1 channel, thetransceiver will change to thatchannel, even if a signal is beingreceived on the Priority2 channel.
14■Auto DialingNote: Auto dialing is either enabled or disabledby your dealer {page 16}.Store:To store a number in memory:1Press the # key.•A “D” will appear on the display.2Press the desired DTMF keys toenter a maximum of 16 digits.•Press and hold the PTT switch,then press 2, 5, 8, 0, , or # toenter A, B, C, D, , or #(consecutively).3Press the # key.4Select the desired memorychannel by pressing a DTMF key(1 ~ 9).•The entered number will be storedin the memory channel selected.■RedialingA maximum of 16 digits can beredialed. The last number dialed,either manually or automatically, willbe redialed.To redial a number:1Press the key.•An “A” will appear on the display.2Press the 0 key.•The transceiver will redial the lastnumber, and the digits will appearon the display.Note: If the transceiver power is switched OFF,the redial memory will be erased.

Radio FRequency eneRgy SaFety inFoRmationThis KENWOOD transceiver has been tested and complies with the standards listed below, in regards to Radio Frequency (RF) energy and electromagnetic energy (EME) generated by the transceiver.• FCC RF exposure limits for Occupational Use Only. RF Exposure limits adopted by the FCC are generally based on recommendations from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, & the American National Standards Institute.• FCC OET Bulletin 65 Edition 97-01 Supplement C• American National Standards Institute (C95.1 – 1992)• American National Standards Institute (C95.3 – 1992)This KENWOOD transceiver generates RF EME while transmitting. RF EME (Radio Frequency Electric & Magnetic Energy) has the potential to cause slight thermal, or heating effects to any part of your body less than the recommended distance from this radio transmitter’s antenna. RF energy exposure is determined primarily by the distance to and the power of the transmitting device. In general, RF exposure is minimized when the lowest possible power is used or transmission time is kept to the minimum required for consistent communications, and the greatest distance possible from the antenna to the body is maintained. The transceiver has been designed for and is classied for Occupational Use Only. Occupational/ controlled exposure limits are applicable to situations in which persons are exposed to RF energy as a consequence of their employment, and such persons have been made aware of the potential for exposure and can exercise control over their exposure. This means you can use the transceiver only if you are aware of the potential hazards of operating a transceiver and are familiar in ways to minimize these hazards. This transceiver is not intended for use by the general public in uncontrolled environments. Nominal transceiver operation is 5% transmission time, 5% reception time, and 90% stand-by time.• Use only the specied antenna for this transceiver; this may be either the antenna provided with the transceiver or another antenna authorized by KENWOOD.Use only KENWOOD authorized accessories (antennas, battery packs, belt clips, Speaker/ Mics or headsets etc.): When worn on the body, always place the radio in a KENWOOD recommended clip or carrying case meant for this product.
