3Replace the battery cover, and turnthe D-ring clockwise.4Hold  .5Select Setup > System > BatteryType.6Select Alkaline, Lithium, orRechargeable NiMH.Charging the Dog Collar DeviceNOTICETo prevent corrosion, thoroughly dry thecontacts on the collar and the surroundingarea before connecting the charging clip.You should fully charge the battery beforeyou use the device for the first time.Charging a fully depleted battery takesabout five hours. The device will notcharge when outside the temperaturerange of 32° to 113°F (0° to 45°C).1Snap the charging clip À onto thedevice Á.2Plug the power cable into a powersource.The status LED is solid red when thecollar is charging.3After the status LED turns solid green,remove the charging clip from thecollar.Turning On the Devices• On the handheld device, hold thepower key until the LCD display turnson.•On the dog collar device, hold thepower key until the status LED flashesand the collar beeps.5DRAFT
Acquiring Satellite SignalsBoth the collar and handheld device mustacquire satellite signals before you put thecollar on your dog. Acquiring satellitescan take a few minutes.1Go outdoors to an open area.2Turn on both devices (page 5).3Select the power key on the handhelddevice. shows the GPS signal strength.When the collar has acquired satellitesignals, the status LED flashes a double-blink or triple-blink in green.Adding a DogThe handheld device can track up to 10dogs with dog collar devices. If youpurchase additional dog collar devices,you can link them to the handheld device.To link, the handheld device must beclose enough to the dog collar device totouch it, or you must know the dog collardevice ID number.1Select DOG.2Select Add Dog.3Follow the on-screen instructions.By default, the new dog is named“Dog” and an ID number is randomlyassigned.An error message could appear ifthere is a conflict with the ID numberof another dog.Status InformationSatellite signal and battery statusinformation is provided on the main menuand when you select  .Indicates the satellite signal strength.Indicates the remaining batterypower.Blinks when the device detects asignal (for example, a dog collardevice) on the channel it is receiving.Adjusting the Backlight BrightnessNOTE: The backlight brightness may belimited when the remaining capacity in thebatteries is low.Extensive use of screen backlighting cansignificantly reduce battery life.1Select  .2Use the rocker to adjust thebrightness levels.6DRAFT
TIP: You can also select   to cyclethrough the brightness levels.3Select ENTER to select a brightnesslevel and close the menu.Fitting the Collar on Your DogBefore you put the collar on the dog, pairthe handheld device and collar (page 6),and acquire satellite signals (page 6).1Position the collar with the VHF whipantenna pointing up, the GPS antennafacing up, and the LEDs facingforward.2Place the collar around the middle ofthe dog's neck.3Tighten the strap so it is snug aroundthe dog's neck.NOTE: The collar should fit tightly andshould not be able to rotate or slide onthe dog's neck. The dog must be ableto swallow food and water normally.You should observe your dog'sbehavior to verify that the collar is nottoo tight.4If the strap is too long, cut off theexcess, leaving at least 3 inches (7.62cm) to spare.Marking Your Vehicle LocationYou can mark the location of your vehicleso you can navigate back to your vehicleafter a hunt.1From the main menu, select StartNew Hunt.2Follow the on-screen instructions.Communication with the CollarThe handheld device and dog collardevice use radio signals to communicate.Objects in the path of radio signalsdegrade the quality of the signals.Keeping an unobstructed line of sight7DRAFT
between your handheld device and yourdog’s dog collar device produces the bestcommunication signal. Obstructed radiowaves result in a poor signal. To achievethe best line-of-sight conditions, youshould move to the highest elevation pointin your area (for example, on the top of ahill).BestGoodPoorCalibrating the CompassNOTE: You must calibrate the electroniccompass outdoors. Do not stand nearobjects that influence magnetic fields,such as cars, buildings, or overheadpower lines.The device has a 3-axis electroniccompass. You should calibrate thecompass after moving long distances,experiencing temperature changes, orchanging the batteries.1Select DOG > MENU.2Select Calibrate Compass > Start.3Follow the on-screen instructions.Garmin BaseCamp™ BaseStationTo get the most from your Garmin device,you can download BaseCamp software.Go to www.garmin.com/basecamp. Youcan view and organize your maps,waypoints, routes, and tracks and sendthem to your device.
