5. CUSTOMIZING YOUR UNIT5-18Contents of GPS unit setup menu (continued from previous page)Item Description Settings Default SettingPosition Smoothing When the DOP or receiving conditionis unfavorable, the GPS fix maychange greatly, even if the vessel isdead in water. This change can bereduced by smoothing the raw GPSfixes. A setting between 000 to 999 isavailable. The higher setting the moresmoothed the raw data, however toohigh a setting shows response time tochange in latitude and longitude. Thisis especially noticeable at high ship’speeds. 000 is the normal setting;increase the setting if the GPS fixchanges greatly.0-999 sec 0 sec (no positionsmoothing)Spd/Cse Smoothing During position fixing, ship’s velocity(speed and course) is directlymeasured by receiving GPS satellitesignals. The raw velocity data maychange randomly depending onreceiving conditions and otherfactors. You can reduce this randomvariation by increasing thesmoothing. Like with latitude andlongitude smoothing, the higher thespeed and course smoothing themore smoothed the raw data. If thesetting is too high, however, theresponse to speed and coursechange slows. For no smoothing, enter all zeroes.0-999 sec 5 secGPS SpeedAverage Calculation of ETA is based onaverage ship’s speed over a givenperiod.
