System OverviewProduct DescriptionThe 261-3363 Wireless CommunicationAdapter (WCA) is a service tool for remotelymonitoring machine or engine operation usingCatET and an 802.11 enabled PC. The groupconsists of a portable hardware adapter and asoftware program designed to run underMicrosoft Windows (XP, 2000, ME, or 98). Itwill allow a laptop computer (PC) to aid in themonitoring of ECM communication (3) onJ1939/11 high speed data link, CAT DataLink, and J1708 (ATA) vehicle networks.Communication between the WirelessCommunication Adapter (2) and the PC withCatET (1) is transmitted through an 802.11bwireless network. The 261-3363 Wireless CommunicationAdapter is available as a group that containsall the necessary cables and software requiredfor using the Wireless Communication Adapteron Caterpillar products. Replacement partscan also be purchased separately. For a list ofthe parts contained in the group, refer to theParts List section.1. ECM.Wireless Communication AdapterThe Wireless Communication Adapter modulecombines the functionality of a CommunicationAdapter with an 802.11b radio. The module ismounted to the machine with magnetic mountsand connects to the on-board data links (CATData Link, J1939 and ATA) through a Data LinkHarness. The module translates the data linktraffic into messages that are communicatedvia the 802.11b Wireless Network to the802.11b Enabled PC running Caterpillar ET.Data Link HarnessThe Data Link Harness connects the WirelessCommunication Adapter to the diagnostic porton the radio. Note that the harness lengthmust not be extended, as functionality will belost.802.11b Enabled PCCaterpillar Electronic Technician is used on aPC to display information about the machine. An 802.11 network card is required for the PCto communicate with the WirelessCommunication Adapter.4
Network InterfaceThe Wireless Communication Adapter systemrelies on an 802.11b radio network. The radionetwork is configured to operate in Ad Hocmode (Channel 11) and utilizes an IP AddressRange in Private Address space (172.23.x.x)by default but can be changed as neededbased on the site-specific networkrequirements. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)is enabled with a default static WEP key. Thistoo can be configured based on localrequirements. For information regarding themodification of settings for the WirelessCommunication Adapter, refer to the ContactInformation section at the front of this manual.Contact your local Network Administrator formore information and assistance in changingand documenting these settings.Parts ListThe 261-3363 Wireless CommunicationAdapter Group consists of:Part Number Description239-9955 Wireless Communication Adapter259-3183 Data Link Cable261-4867 802.11b PC Card and Software CD262-7732 Magnetic Feet (4 required)261-3381 Foam Insert (for carrying case)6V-3072 Carrying Case154-6315 Machine Screw (4 required)8T-0328 Washer (4 required)6D-5801 Locknut (4 required)NEHS0926 Tool Operating ManualOptional AccessoriesPart Number Description250-2349 Wireless Communication Adapter Antenna(Service Replacement)261-4871 PCMCIA Card Range Extender Antenna (Optional Accessory)System RequirementsTo successfully operate the WirelessCommunication Adapter, the following PChardware and software is required:Recommended PC Configuration• 128 MB of RAM• CD-ROM drive • IBM® PC compatible with Pentium III 450MHz processor or greaterMinimum Software Requirements• Microsoft® Windows™ XP, 2000, ME, or98Network Requirements• 802.11b Wireless Network• Ad Hoc Mode / Channel 11• WEP Encryption – 128-Bit Static Key• 172.23.x.x Private Addressing Range• IP Address / Subnet and WEP keyconfigurableSpecificationsDescription SpecificationOperating Voltage 9V DC – 32V DC, 3.6 watts typical, 4 watts maximumOperating Temperature -40°C to +70°C(-40°F to +158°F)Overall Size (without magnets) 213.9 x 119.9 x 45.2 mm (8.42 x 4.72 x 1.78 in)Weight (without magnets) 472 g (1.04 lb)Vehicle Protocols Supported: Cat Data Link (CDL)ATA (SAE J1708)SAE J1939Wireless Communication TCP/IP over 802.11b (11 Mb)Wireless Communication Range (line of site)Standard Configuration 152 M (500 ft.)With PCMCIA Card Range Extender Antenna (optional) 244 M (800 ft.)NOTE: All specifications are subject to change without notice.5

If communication still does notoccur, refer to the Contact Information atthe front of this manual.Using the WirelessCommunication Adapter When using the Wireless CommunicationAdapter to do remote monitoring of machines, there are several factors that can have asignificant affect on overall performance of thesystem.1. Location of the Wireless CommunicationAdapter on the machine.2. Location of the PC that will becommunicating with the WirelessCommunication Adapter.3. Obstacles in the Line-of-Sight between thePC and the Wireless CommunicationAdapter.4. Weather conditions. The Wireless Communication Adapter shouldbe located as high up on the machine aspossible, preferably with the antenna at thehighest point of the machine and adjusted topoint up into the air. Since the WirelessCommunication Adapter relies on Line-of-Sight for effective communications, it isimportant to place the device in a location thatcan be easily seen from the location of the PCthat will be monitoring it.The location of the PC used to monitor themachine is just as important. If the PC issitting on the seat of the service truck, it will bemuch less effective in communicating with theWireless Communication Adapter than it wouldbe if it were outside the vehicle in “Line-of-Site” of the machine. An optional RangeExtender Antenna (see Optional Accessories)will provide extended range and permit the PCto be operated where it is not in Line-of-Sightof the Wireless Communication Adapter, aslong as the Range Extender Antenna can seethe device from its location.28
Obstacles in the Line-of-Sight between the PCand the Wireless Communication Adapter canhave a significant affect on the range of thesystem. Obstacles may include hills, buildings, or even the machine beingmonitored. If the machine being monitoreddrives over a hill, radio communication with thePC will likely stop until the machine is visible.Operating the machine with buildings or othermachines in the Line-of-Sight will likely deliversimilar reduction or loss of radiocommunication. The machine itself can alsobe an obstacle if the Wireless CommunicationAdapter is placed on the right side of themachine and the PC that is monitoring themachine is on the left. In some cases, whilecommunication is not completely lost, therange of the system will be significantlyreduced.Another factor that can reduce the range ofthe Wireless Communication Adapter system isweather. Range of the system is best on clear, dry days. Rain and fog will reduce the rangeof the system, but will not keep the systemfrom operating. It is important to follow these guidelines inorder to achieve the best possible resultswhen using the Wireless CommunicationAdapter. 1. Start CatET and click on “Utilities”, then“Preferences” on the menu bar to select thetype of Communication Adapter to be used. This will bring up the following screen.2. Click on the down arrow to select theCommunication Adapter type. From the listthat is displayed, select “WirelessCommunication Adapter”. When thisselection is made, a second select list willbe displayed that allows the user to selectthe Wireless Communication Adapter that isto be used.3. If a site has multiple WirelessCommunication Adapter modules, they canbe added through the “Advanced” buttonof this menu. The following screen shows awindow that displays several WirelessCommunication Adapters that have beenconfigured.29
4. Select the appropriate interface and clickon “OK”. Click on the “Connect” icon toattempt a connection to the selectedWireless Communication Adapter.
