Component Description(1) Power light łOn: The computer is on.łBlinking: The computer is in Standby.łOff: The computer is off.(2) Power switch łWhen the computer is off, slide the switch to turnon the computer.łWhen the computer is on, briefly slide the switchto initiate Standby.łWhen the computer is in Standby, briefly slidethe switch to exit Standby.łWhen the computer is in Hibernation, brieflyslide the switch to exit Hibernation.If the computer has stopped responding andWindows shutdown procedures are ineffective, slideand hold the power switch for at least 5 seconds toturn off the computer.To learn more about your power settings, selectStart > Control Panel > Performance andMaintenance > Power Options.(3) Drive light Blinking: The hard drive or flash drive is beingaccessed.(4) Battery light łOn: A battery is charging.łBlinking: A battery that is the only availablepower source has reached a low battery level.When the battery reaches a critical battery level,the battery light begins blinking rapidly.łOff: If the computer is plugged into an externalpower source, the light turns off when allbatteries in the computer are fully charged. The regulatory label isaffixed to the bottom of the computer.łWireless certification label(s)—Provide information about optional wireless devices and theapproval markings of some of the countries or regions in which the devices have been approvedfor use. 2 Power managementSetting power optionsUsing power-saving statesThe computer has two power-saving states enabled at the factory: Standby and Hibernation.When Standby is initiated, the power light blinks and the screen clears. Your work is saved to memory.Exiting Standby is faster than exiting Hibernation. If the computer is in Standby for an extended periodor if the battery reaches a critical battery level while in Standby, the computer initiates Hibernation.When Hibernation is initiated, your work is saved to a hibernation file on the hard drive and the computerturns off.CAUTION: To prevent possible audio and video degradation, loss of audio or video playbackfunctionality, or loss of information, do not initiate Standby or Hibernation while reading from or writingto a disc or an external media card.NOTE: You cannot initiate any type of networking connection or perform any computer functions whilethe computer is in Standby or in Hibernation.Initiating and exiting StandbyThe system is set at the factory to initiate Standby after 10 minutes of inactivity when running on batterypower and 25 minutes of inactivity when running on external power.Power settings and timeouts can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel.With the computer on, you can initiate Standby in any of the following ways:łPress fn+f1.łClick Start > Turn Off Computer > Stand By.To exit Standby:Briefly slide the power switch.When the computer exits Standby, the power light turns on and your work returns to the screenwhere you stopped working.NOTE: If you have set a password to be required when the computer exits Standby, you must enteryour Windows password before your work will return to the screen.Setting power options 11Antenna House XSL Formatter (Evaluation) http://www.antennahouse.com/
Initiating and exiting HibernationThe system is set at the factory to initiate Hibernation after 30 minutes of inactivity when running onbattery power or when the battery reaches a critical battery level.NOTE: The system will not initiate Hibernation when running on external power.NOTE: To reduce the risk of information loss, periodically save your work.Power settings and timeouts can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel.To initiate Hibernation:1. Select Start > Turn Off Computer.2. Hold down the shift key and select Hibernate.To exit Hibernation:Briefly slide the power switch.The power light turns on and your work returns to the screen where you stopped working.NOTE: If you have set a password to be required when the computer exits Hibernation, you must enteryour Windows password before your work will return to the screen.Using power schemesA power scheme is a collection of system settings that manages how the computer uses power. When you disconnect external AC power, the following events occur:łThe computer switches to battery power.łThe display brightness is automatically decreased to save battery life. To increase displaybrightness, press the fn+f4 hotkey or reconnect the AC adapter.Connecting the AC adapterWARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment:Plug the power cord into an AC outlet that is easily accessible at all times.Disconnect power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet (not byunplugging the power cord from the computer).If provided with a 3-pin attachment plug on the power cord, plug the cord into a grounded (earthed) 3-pin outlet. Do not disable the power cord grounding pin, for example, by attaching a 2-pin adapter. Thegrounding pin is an important safety feature.To connect the computer to external AC power, follow these steps:1. Plug the AC adapter into the power connector (1) on the computer.2. Plug the power cord into the AC adapter (2).3. Plug the other end of the power cord into an AC outlet (3).Using battery powerWhen a charged battery is in the computer and the computer is not plugged into external power, thecomputer runs on battery power. When the computer is plugged into external AC power, the computerruns on AC power.If the computer contains a charged battery and is running on external AC power supplied through theAC adapter, the computer switches to battery power if the AC adapter is disconnected from thecomputer.NOTE: The display brightness is decreased to save battery life when you disconnect AC power. You can keep a battery in the computer or in storage, depending on how you work. Keeping the batteryin the computer whenever the computer is plugged into AC power charges the battery and also protectsyour work in case of a power outage. However, a battery in the computer slowly discharges when thecomputer is off and unplugged from external power.WARNING! To reduce potential safety issues, use only the battery provided with the computer, areplacement battery provided by HP, or a compatible battery purchased from HP.Computer battery life varies, depending on power management settings, programs running on thecomputer, display brightness, external devices connected to the computer, and other factors.Displaying the remaining battery chargeDouble-click the Power Meter icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.– or –Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options > PowerMeter tab.Most charge indicators report battery status as both a percentage and as the number of minutes ofcharge remaining:łThe percentage indicates the approximate amount of charge remaining in the battery.łThe time indicates the approximate running time remaining on the battery if the battery continuesto provide power at the current level. For example, the time remaining will decrease when a DVDis playing and will increase when a DVD stops playing.When a battery is charging, a lightning bolt icon may be superimposed over the battery icon on thePower Meter screen.Inserting or removing the batteryCAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole power source may cause loss of information. To preventloss of information, save your work and initiate Hibernation or shut down the computer through Windowsbefore removing the battery.To insert the battery:1. 2. Insert the battery into the battery bay (1) and rotate it downward until it is seated (2).The battery release latches (3) automatically lock the battery into place.To remove the battery:1. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface.2. Slide the battery release latches (1) to release the battery.3. Pivot the battery (2) upward and remove the battery from the computer (3).Charging a batteryWARNING! Firewalls are available in many varieties, both software andhardware. Some networks use a combination of both types.łUse wireless encryptionA variety of sophisticated encryption protocols is available for your WLAN. Find the solution thatworks best for your network security:ŃWired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a wireless security protocol that encodes or encrypts allnetwork data before it is transmitted using a WEP key. Usually, you can allow the network toassign the WEP key. Alternatively, you can set up your own key, generate a different key, orchoose other advanced options. Without the correct key, others will not be able to use theWLAN.ŃWPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), like WEP, uses security settings to encrypt and decrypt datathat is transmitted over the network. However, instead of using one static security key forencryptions as WEP does, WPA uses “temporal key integrity protocol” (TKIP) to dynamicallygenerate a new key for every packet. It also generates different sets of keys for each computeron the network.łClose your networkIf possible, prevent your network name (SSID) from being broadcast by the wireless transmitter.Most networks initially broadcast the name, telling any computer nearby that your network isavailable. By closing the network, other computers are less likely to know that your network exists.NOTE: If your network is closed and the SSID is not broadcast, you will need to know or rememberthe SSID to connect new devices to the network. Backing up your informationRecovery after a system failure is as complete as your most current backup. You should create yourinitial backup immediately after software setup. Performing a recoveryIn case of system failure or instability, use the Operating System and Driver Recovery discs includedwith your computer to recover your operating system and programs installed at the factory.CAUTION: The recovery process reformats and completely erases the hard drive. All files you havecreated and any software installed on the computer are permanently removed. The recovery processreinstalls the original operating system, software, and drivers. Software, drivers, and updates notinstalled by HP must be manually reinstalled.To recover your operating system and programs, follow these steps:1. If possible, back up all personal files.2. Insert the Operating System disc into an external optical drive (purchased separately).3. Shut down the computer.4. Turn on the computer.5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the operating system.6. After the operating system is installed, remove the Operating System disc and insert the DriverRecovery disc.7. Identify your computer model, product category, and series or family. Prepare for a system BIOSupdate by identifying the BIOS version currently installed on the computer.If your computer is connected to a network, consult the network administrator before installing anysoftware updates, especially system BIOS updates.NOTE: The computer system BIOS is stored on the system ROM. Updating the BIOSTo update the BIOS, first determine what BIOS version you currently have and then download and installthe new BIOS.Determining the BIOS versionTo determine whether available BIOS updates contain later BIOS versions than those currently installedon the computer, you need to know the version of the system BIOS currently installed.BIOS version information (also known as ROM date and System BIOS) can be displayed by openingthe Setup Utility.To display the BIOS information:1. Open the Setup Utility by turning on or restarting the computer, and then pressing f10 while the“F10 = BIOS Setup Options” message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen.2. If the Setup Utility does not open with the system information displayed, use the arrow keys toselect the Main menu.When the Main menu is selected, BIOS and other system information is displayed.3.
