Component Description(1) Power cord* Connects an AC adapter to an AC outlet.(2) AC adapter Converts AC power to DC power.(3) Battery* Powers the device when the device is not plugged into externalpower.*Batteries and power cords vary in appearance by region and country.Identifying the labelsThe labels affixed to the device provide information you may need when you troubleshoot systemproblems or travel internationally with the device.●Service tag—Provides important information including the following:◦Product name (1). This is the product name affixed to the front of your device.◦Serial number (s/n) (2). This is an alphanumeric identifier that is unique to each product.◦Part Number/Product number (p/n) (3). This number provides specific information about thehardware components of the product. The part number helps a service technician to determinewhat components and parts are needed.◦Model description (4). This is the alphanumeric identifier you use to locate documents, drivers,and support for your device.◦Warranty period (5). This number describes the duration (in years) of the warranty period forthis device.Have this information available when you contact technical support. The service tag label is affixedto the bottom of the device.●Microsoft® Certificate of Authenticity—Contains the Windows® Product Key. You may need theProduct Key to update or troubleshoot the operating system. This certificate is affixed to the bottomof the device.●Regulatory label—Provides regulatory information about the device, including the following:◦Information about optional wireless devices and the approval markings of some of thecountries or regions in which the devices have been approved for use. 2 Power managementSetting power optionsUsing power-saving statesThe device has two power-saving states enabled at the factory: Standby and Hibernation.When Standby is initiated, the power light blinks and the screen clears. Your work is saved to memory.Exiting Standby is faster than exiting Hibernation. If the device is in Standby for an extended period orif the battery reaches a critical battery level while in Standby, the device initiates Hibernation.When Hibernation is initiated, your work is saved to a hibernation file on the hard drive and the deviceturns off.CAUTION: To prevent possible audio and video degradation, loss of audio or video playbackfunctionality, or loss of information, do not initiate Standby or Hibernation while reading from or writingto a disc or an external media card.NOTE: You cannot initiate any type of networking connection or perform any device functions whilethe device is in Standby or in Hibernation.Initiating and exiting StandbyThe system is set at the factory to initiate Standby after 10 minutes of inactivity when running on batterypower and 25 minutes of inactivity when running on external power.Power settings and timeouts can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel.With the device on, you can initiate Standby in any of the following ways:●Press fn+f1.●Click Start > Turn Off Computer > Stand By.To exit Standby:▲Briefly slide the power switch.When the device exits Standby, the power light turns on and your work returns to the screen whereyou stopped working.NOTE: If you have set a password to be required when the device exits Standby, you must enter yourWindows password before your work will return to the screen.Initiating and exiting HibernationThe system is set at the factory to initiate Hibernation after 30 minutes of inactivity when running onbattery power or when the battery reaches a critical battery level.NOTE: The system will not initiate Hibernation when running on external power.NOTE: To reduce the risk of information loss, periodically save your work.Power settings and timeouts can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel.10 Chapter 2 Power managementAntenna House XSL Formatter (Evaluation) http://www.antennahouse.com/

To initiate Hibernation:1. Select Start > Turn Off Computer.2. Hold down the shift key and select Hibernate.– or –▲If the device is on, briefly slide the power switch.To exit Hibernation:▲Briefly slide the power switch.When the device exits Hibernation, the power light turns on and your work returns to the screen whereyou stopped working.NOTE: If you have set a password to be required when the device exits Hibernation, you must enteryour Windows password before your work will return to the screen.Using power schemesA power scheme is a collection of system settings that manages how the device uses power. Click OK.Setting password protection upon exiting StandbyTo set the device to prompt for a password when the device exits Standby, follow these steps:1. Right-click the Power Meter icon in the notification area, and then click Adjust PowerProperties.2. Click the Advanced tab.3. Select the Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby check box.4. Click Apply.Using external AC powerExternal AC power is supplied through one of the following devices:WARNING! To reduce potential safety issues, use only the AC adapter provided with the device, areplacement AC adapter provided by HP, or a compatible AC adapter purchased from HP.●Approved AC adapter●Optional docking device or optional expansion productConnect the device to external AC power under any of the following conditions:WARNING! Do not charge the device battery while you are onboard aircraft.●When you are charging or calibrating a battery●When you are installing or modifying system software●When you are writing information to a CD or DVDWhen you connect the device to external AC power, the following events occur:●The battery begins to charge.●If the device is turned on, the battery meter icon in the notification area changes appearance.When you disconnect external AC power, the following events occur:●The device switches to battery power.●The display brightness is automatically decreased to save battery life. Connecting the AC adapterWARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment:Plug the power cord into an AC outlet that is easily accessible at all times.Disconnect power from the device by unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet (not by unpluggingthe power cord from the device).If provided with a 3-pin attachment plug on the power cord, plug the cord into a grounded (earthed) 3-pin outlet. Do not disable the power cord grounding pin, for example, by attaching a 2-pin adapter. Thegrounding pin is an important safety feature.To connect the device to external AC power, follow these steps:1. Plug the AC adapter into the power connector (1) on the device.2. Plug the power cord into the AC adapter (2).3. Plug the other end of the power cord into an AC outlet (3).Using battery powerWhen a charged battery is in the device and the device is not plugged into external power, the deviceruns on battery power. When the device is plugged into external AC power, the device runs on ACpower.If the device contains a charged battery and is running on external AC power supplied through the ACadapter, the device switches to battery power if the AC adapter is disconnected from the device.NOTE: The display brightness is decreased to save battery life when you disconnect AC power. Toincrease display brightness, use the fn+f4 hotkey or reconnect the AC adapter.You can keep a battery in the device or in storage, depending on how you work. Keeping the battery inthe device whenever the device is plugged into AC power charges the battery and also protects yourwork in case of a power outage. However, a battery in the device slowly discharges when the device isoff and unplugged from external power.WARNING! To reduce potential safety issues, use only the battery provided with the device, areplacement battery provided by HP, or a compatible battery purchased from HP.Device battery life varies, depending on power management settings, programs running on the device,display brightness, external devices connected to the device, and other factors.Using battery power 13Antenna House XSL Formatter (Evaluation) http://www.antennahouse.com/

Displaying the remaining battery charge▲Double-click the Power Meter icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.– or –Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options > PowerMeter tab.Most charge indicators report battery status as both a percentage and as the number of minutes ofcharge remaining:●The percentage indicates the approximate amount of charge remaining in the battery.●The time indicates the approximate running time remaining on the battery if the battery continuesto provide power at the current level. For example, the time remaining will decrease when a DVDis playing and will increase when a DVD stops playing.When a battery is charging, a lightning bolt icon may be superimposed over the battery icon on thePower Meter screen.Inserting or removing the batteryCAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole power source may cause loss of information. To preventloss of information, save your work and initiate Hibernation or shut down the device through Windowsbefore removing the battery.To insert the battery:1. Disconnect all external devices.2. If the device is connected to AC power, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.3. Turn the device upside down on a flat surface.4. Align the tabs on the battery with the notches on the device, and then insert the battery into thebattery bay. To remove the battery:1. Disconnect all external devices.2. If the device is connected to AC power, unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.3. Turn the device upside down on a flat surface.4. Slide the battery release latches (1) to release the battery, and then remove the battery (2).Charging a batteryWARNING! Do not charge the device battery while you are onboard aircraft.The battery charges whenever the device is plugged into external power through an AC adapter, anoptional power adapter, an optional docking device, or an optional expansion product.The battery charges whether the device is off or in use, but it charges faster when the device is off.Charging may take longer if a battery is new, has been unused for 2 weeks or more, or is much warmeror cooler than room temperature.To prolong battery life and optimize the accuracy of battery charge displays, follow theserecommendations:●If you are charging a new battery, charge it fully before turning on the device.●Charge the battery until the battery light turns off.NOTE: If the device is on while the battery is charging, the battery meter in the notification areamay show 100 percent charge before the battery is fully charged.●Allow the battery to discharge below 5 percent of a full charge through normal use before chargingit.●If the battery has been unused for one month or more, calibrate the battery instead of simplycharging it.Using battery power 15Antenna House XSL Formatter (Evaluation) http://www.antennahouse.com/

Maximumdischarge time gradually shortens, as the battery storage capacity naturally degrades.Tips for maximizing battery discharge time:●Lower the brightness on the display.●Remove the battery from the device when it is not being used or charged.●Store the battery in a cool, dry location.Managing low battery levelsThe information in this section describes the alerts and system responses set at the factory. Some low-battery alerts and system responses can be changed using Power Options in Windows Control Panel.Preferences set using Power Options do not affect lights.Identifying low battery levelsWhen a battery that is the sole power source for the device reaches a low battery level, the battery lightblinks.If a low battery level is not resolved, the device enters a critical battery level, and the battery light blinksrapidly.The device takes the following actions for a critical battery level:●If Hibernation is enabled and the device is on or in Standby, the device initiates Hibernation.●If Hibernation is disabled and the device is on or in Standby, the device remains briefly in Standby,and then shuts down and loses any unsaved information.16 Chapter 2 Power managementAntenna House XSL Formatter (Evaluation) http://www.antennahouse.com/
