Check with your localauthorities.Electrical safetyCharge the handheld using only the USB cable HDW-06610-001, Travel charger ASY-04078-001ASY-04195-001 or other charging accessory provided or specifically approved by Research In MotionLimited (RIM) for use with this handheld. Any approval from RIM under this document must be inwriting and must be from a person authorized to provide such approval. Use of any other accessorywill invalidate any warranty provided with the handheld and might be dangerous.Use the charging accessories provided with the handheld or any other approved charging accessoriesonly from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. Before using any power supply,verify that the mains voltage is in accordance with the voltage printed on the power supply. Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or convenience receptacles as this might result in a riskof fire or electric shock. To reduce the risk of damage to the cord or the plug, pull the plug rather thanthe cord when you disconnect the charging accessory from the wall outlet or convenience receptacle.Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptaclesand the point where the power cord connects to the handheld. Refer to the documentation that came with the handheld for more information on inserting the batteryand connecting the power supply.Battery safety and disposalThe handheld contains a removable lithium-ion battery. Do not dispose of either the handheld or thelithium battery in a fire. Dispose of the lithium battery in accordance with the laws and regulations inyour area governing disposal of such cell types. The battery might present a fire or chemical burn hazard if mistreated. Do not disassemble, crush, orpuncture the battery. Do not heat the battery above 60°C (140°F). Do not allow metal objects to contactthe battery terminals. Use only the battery that RIM specifies for use with your particular handheld model. Using any otherbattery will invalidate any warranty provided with the handheld and might present a risk of fire orexplosion.Driving safetyCheck the laws and regulations regarding the use of wireless handhelds in the areas where you drive.Always obey them. Also, if using the handheld as a phone while driving, please use the followingguidelines:• Give your full attention to driving; driving safely is your first responsibility.• Use hands-free operation if it is available.• Pull off the road and park before making or answering a phone call. Do not use the other features of the handheld while driving. Have a passenger in the vehicle use thehandheld for you, or find a safe location to stop your vehicle prior to using the handheld.

If your vehicle is equipped with an air bag, do notplace the handheld or other objects above the air bag, or in the air bag deployment area. If in-vehiclewireless equipment is improperly stored or installed, and the air bag inflates, serious injury couldresult.Radio frequency (RF) signals might affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronicsystems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer or its representative regarding your vehicle. Ifany equipment has been added to your vehicle, you should also consult the manufacturer of thatequipment for information on RF signals.AccessoriesUse only those accessories approved by RIM. Using any accessories not approved by RIM for use withthis particular handheld model will invalidate any approval or warranty applicable to the handheldand might be dangerous.Antenna careUse only the supplied integral antenna. Unauthorized antenna modifications, or attachments coulddamage the handheld and might violate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.Operating and storage temperaturesSituate the handheld or handheld accessories away from heat sources, such as radiators, heat registers,stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.If you are not going to use the handheld for more than two weeks, turn the handheld power off,remove the battery, and follow the operating and storage temperatures listed below:Interference with electronic equipmentMost modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF signals. However, certain electronic equipmentmight not be shielded against the RF signals from the handheld.Pacemakers: Consult a physician or the manufacturer of your pacemaker if you have any questionsregarding the effect of RF signals on your pacemaker. If you have a pacemaker, verify that you areusing the handheld in accordance with the safety requirements associated with your particularpacemaker, which might include the following:• Always keep the handheld more than 7 inches (20 cm) from the pacemaker when the handheld is turned on.• Do not carry the handheld in your breast pocket.• When using the handheld as a phone, use the ear opposite the pacemaker for making and receiving calls to minimize the potential interference. • If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn the handheld radio and the Bluetooth radio off immediately.Hearing aids: Some digital wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids. In the event of suchinterference, consult your service provider or contact the manufacturer of your hearing aid to discussalternatives.Other medical devices: If you use any other personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of yourdevice to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy. Hospitals or health care facilities maybe using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy.Aircraft: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and FCC regulations prohibit using the radio of thehandheld while in the air. Turn the handheld radio and the Bluetooth radio off before boarding anaircraft. The effect of using the handheld radio or the Bluetooth radio in an aircraft is unknown. Suchuse might affect aircraft instrumentation, communication and performance, might disrupt thenetwork, might otherwise be dangerous to the operation of the aircraft, and might be illegal. Use anyother handheld applications in accordance with airline regulations for electronic devices.Dangerous areasPotentially explosive atmospheres: Turn the handheld radio and the Bluetooth radio off when in anyarea with a potentially explosive atmosphere, and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areascould cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death.Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. They includefueling areas such as gasoline or petrol stations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemical transfer orstorage facilities; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane); areas where theair contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where youwould normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.Do not use the handheld phone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak. Leave the area and makethe call from a safe location.Blasting areas: To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn the handheld radio and theBluetooth radio off when in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio”. Obey allsigns and instructions.ServiceOnly qualified service personnel should perform repairs to the handheld. Disconnect the power supplycables from the computer or electrical outlet and refer the handheld or charging accessory for service toqualified service personnel if any of the following situations occur:• the power supply cord, plug, or connector is damaged• liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the handheld or charging accessory• the handheld or charging accessory has been exposed to rain or water• the handheld or charging accessory becomes very hot to the touch• the handheld or charging accessory has been dropped or damaged in any way• the handheld or charging accessory does not operate normally by following the instructions in the user documentation• the handheld or charging accessory exhibits a distinct change in performanceDo not attempt to disassemble the handheld or any charging accessory. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, adjust only those controls that are covered in the userdocumentation for the handheld. Never spill liquid of any kind on the handheld or handheldaccessories. Stability: Do not place the handheld or handheld accessory on any unstable surface. It could fall,thereby potentially causing serious injury to a person and serious damage to the handheld or handheldaccessory. Take care when using the handheld with any charging accessories to route the power cordin a way that reduces the risk of injury to others, such as by tripping or choking.Cleaning: Do not use liquid, aerosol cleaners, or solvents on or near the handheld or handheldaccessory. Clean only with a dry cloth. It is designed and manufacturednot to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) of the U.S. Government and Industry Canada of the CanadianGovernment (IC). These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels ofRF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by
7Safety and Product Information Bookletindependent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies.The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety of all persons,regardless of age and health.The exposure standard for wireless mobile handhelds employs a unit of measurement known as theSpecific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC/IC is 1.6W/kg*. Tests for SAR areconducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC/IC with the handheld transmittingat its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at thehighest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the handheld while operating can be well belowthe maximum value. This is because the handheld is designed to operate at multiple power levels so asto use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless basestation antenna, the lower the power output.Before a wireless handheld model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified tothe FCC and IC that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirementfor safe exposure under the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-IonizingRadiation Protection (ICNIRP). The tests are performed in positions and locations (for example, at theear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC, IC and for each model.
