2INTRODUCTIONThank you for purchasing the BluetoothUSB Adapter (the USB Adapter) from Belkinfeaturing Bluetoothwireless technology. The USB Adapter lets you create cable-freeconnections between your USB desktop PC and devices using Bluetoothwirelesstechnology. The USB Adapter is compatible with all Bluetoothv1.1-certified devices andenables you to wirelessly connect up to seven other devices enabled with Bluetoothtechnology, such as printers, PDAs, and cell phones simultaneously. Now you canconnect your peripherals and computing devices up to 10 metersaway without cables in your home, office, or while on theroad. Establish ad-hoc connection between deviceswithout having to configure a network.Before you install and start using your new USBAdapter, please take a few minutes to reviewsome of the terms that you will be seeingthroughout the document. 9SOFTWARE SETUPSoftware Setup for Windows 98 SE, Me, 2000, and XPTo install the software for the USB Adapter, follow the instructions below:Note: The installation process for Windows XP may look slightly different from Windows 98 SE, Me, and 2000. Note: Do not insert the USB Adapter into the USB port prior to software installation.1. Insert the software installation CD-ROMinto the PC’s CD-ROM drive.2. The “Software InstallShield Wizard”window appears. Click on “Next” to beginthe installation process.
10SOFTWARE SETUP3. Choose “I accept the terms in thelicense agreement” to accept thelicense agreement. Click on “Next”. 4. Name your device and select the typeof computer you are installing yourUSB Adapter in. Click on “Next”.
5. Specify the location where thesoftware and driver will be installedon your hard drive. It is recommendedthat you install the software anddriver to the default directory“C:\Program Files\belkin\BluetoothSoftware”. Click on “Next”. 6. Confirm that the device software and driver are ready to be installed andclick on “Install”. 11SOFTWARE SETUP
12SOFTWARE SETUPNote: If at any time during the installation process you receive a “Driver Signature Notice”, click “Yes” or“OK” to continue the installation process.7. Confirm the completion ofinstallation; click “Finish” andthen restart the system.
13INSTALLING THE USB ADAPTER Note: Your USB Adapter is sensitive to static electricity, which can damage its delicate electrical components.To protect your device, always touch the metal chassis of your computer before handling the USB Adapter.This will ground any potential electrostatic discharge. Avoid touching the metal connector when handling theUSB Adapter. Dry weather conditions or walking across carpeted floors may cause you to acquire anelectrostatic charge.Connect the USB Adapter directly to an available USB A-type connector on yourdesktop or notebook computer.
14INSTALLING THE USB ADAPTERNote: Your USB Adapter is equipped with a powerful antenna, which provides optimal performance of the radio.In some instances, attaching the USB Adapter directly to the rear of a desktop PC is not the optimal place forthe antenna to propagate its radio signal. For these instances, we recommend you a USB extension cable(Belkin part number F8T050) to extend the USB Adapter to a more optimal place for the radio signals topropagate.
15INSTALLING THE USB DEVICE DRIVER1. After installing the software andrestarting the system, insert the USBAdapter into an available USB port. Youshould see your system register a new,USB device found. Click on “Next”.Note: In some computers, the USB hardware installationwill be automatic and Installation Steps 1–5 will not be necessary.2. Choose “Search for a suitable driver formy device”. Click on “Next”. Note: If you receive a Microsoft Digital Signature Notice,click “Continue” to complete the installation process.
16INSTALLING THE USB DEVICE DRIVER3. Select “Specify a Location” and clickon “Next”. Browse for the location ofthe device driver “C:\ProgramFiles\Belkin\BluetoothSoftware\bin\”; then click “OK”. 4. Confirm that the device driver wasfound and click on “Next”.
17INSTALLING THE USB DEVICE DRIVER5. A window will appear that confirms the completion of the driver installation; click on “Finish”. 6. “My Bluetooth Places” should appear on your desktop. Your installation process is now complete.
18BLUETOOTH CONFIGURATION SETTINGSA variety of Bluetoothservices and explanations of each service can be found in the“Help” file of the “My Bluetooth Places” program.To customize the configuration settings of Bluetoothsoftware for Windows operatingsystem, follow the instructions described below: 1. Right-click on the Bluetoothicon onthe right-hand side of the task barof your screen. The “BluetoothConfiguration” window appears to allow you to customize theconfiguration settings of“Explore”, “Setup”, or “Services”.In the “Setup” menu, there aretwo extended items, ”Security“and “Configuration”.

Click on “Configuration”. a) The “General” tab of“Configuration” allows you tocustomize the device’s username, type, and security type. b) The “Accessibility” tab allowsyou to specify whichindividual devices are allowedto access the user’s computer. c) The “Discovery” tab allows youto specify which individualdevices, type of, or class ofdevice the user’s computer isallowed access to.
20BLUETOOTH CONFIGURATION SETTINGSd) The “Information Exchange” tab allows you to specify the location of differenttypes of files. e) The “Local Services” tab indicates the services this computer makes available tothe other computers. f) The “Client Applications” tab indicates the properties of each application. g) The “Hardware” tab indicates device information of the user’s hardware. h) The “Version Info” tab indicates the module version of the user’s softwarecomponent. i) The “Notifications” tab lets you associate a sound (Windows *.wav file) withspecific Bluetoothevents.
21“MY BLUETOOTH PLACES” PROGRAMThe “My Bluetooth Places” program provides a quick and easy way to performdifferent application services through Bluetoothconnections. A variety of Bluetoothservices and explanations of each service can be found in the “Help” file of the “MyBluetooth Places” program. Bluetooth Services Dial-Up Networking: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwirelessconnection to a Bluetoothdevice (as server) to access the server’s modem service to the Internet. Generic Serial: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwirelessconnection to a Bluetoothdevice (as server) using a temporary serial port connection toallow legacy applications to utilize the Bluetoothconnection. LAN Access: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwirelessconnection to a Bluetoothdevice (as server) to access the server’s connected LANnetwork service.
22“MY BLUETOOTH PLACES” PROGRAMFax Client: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwireless connectionto a Bluetoothdevice (as server) to utilize the fax facility attached to the server. FTP: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwireless connection to aBluetoothdevice (as server) to perform file system actions. Inbox: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwireless connection toa Bluetoothdevice (as server) to send files, e.g. business card, e-mail, etc., throughserver’s personal information manager (PIM) actions. OBEX IrMC Sync: Allows your computer (as client) to establish a Bluetoothwirelessconnection to a Bluetoothdevice (as server) to synchronize the two devices’ mailingaddress book.
23“MY BLUETOOTH PLACES” PROGRAMTo use the “My Bluetooth Places” program, follow the instructions described below: 1. Click “My Bluetooth Places” on yourscreen. Three icons—“My Device”,“Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood”, and“Add Bluetooth Connection”—appearinside the window. 2. Click “My Device” to see which of your application services areavailable to other devices. The iconswithout “X” indicate the availableBluetoothservices.
24“MY BLUETOOTH PLACES” PROGRAM3. Click “Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood”from the “My Bluetooth Places”window to search for devices availableto you. Once Bluetoothdevices aredetected, icons with device names willbe displayed on your screen. You mayinitiate a search for devices byselecting “Bluetooth” from the toolbarof the “Entire BluetoothNeighborhood” window.4. Click on each available device, forexample, a device named “Jon’sDesktop”, to see which services areavailable to you. Double-click on eachicon to begin the different services.
25UNINSTALLING THE SOFTWAREThis section contains instructions for uninstalling the software required to use yourUSB Adapter.1. Insert the CD-ROM included with your USB Adapter.2. The “InstallShield Wizard” should automatically load. If it does not load, explorethe CD and run the “Setup.exe” file.3. The “InstallShield” window shouldnow appear. Click “Next”.
26UNINSTALLING THE SOFTWARE4. Click “Remove” to initiate theUninstallShield Wizard and remove thesoftware from your PC. 5. Click “Finish” to complete theuninstall.
